Need some ideas for an engineering project

So my first idea didn't work out and I need a new one quick, but its hard to come up with something good in a day so I turn to ns. I need to build a prototype for some kind of innovation that improves upon a current product.

In order to find something decent to make I first need to find a problem. Is there any skiing/snowboarding related problems that you guys have and wish something was made better? What about normal every day stuff that could be better?

What kind of class is this for? you might be able to do some stress/strain analysis on a ski.

It can be almost any kind of engineering. I'm a computer systems engineer, so mainly electrical stuff, but I can do mechanical too. the class is called engineering design.

Some projects other people are doing:
- thermostat to control room temperature
- snowboard binding that swivels forward so you can push easier
- cooler with speakers built in

I just need a decent idea and I can come up with a way to make it

my friend made a steel cutter for his senior me preject. it pretty much looked like a can opener, but you squeeze the handles together and it feeds a steel sheet through it. it was pretty legit, and i believe they got to actualy produce it

skiing improvements:


how about you make radio waves travel straight instead of curved, so when im searching for a buried beacon i go straight instead of on a dang curve. maybe put like 5 antennas into it so it can do the math itself, out think the curve, and be all "hey dig over there". and make them travel farther so i can pick them up from farther away. but don't let there be interference from my radio or cell phone.

or invent a sarcasm meter for NS forums

a wax scraper for when u wax ur ski's/snowboard that catches the wax as you go so that there isn't as bad of a clean up.... what i was thinking was having a like handle to hold it and when u put preasur down to scrape the wax off it creates a small gap that the wax goes into which leads to a space in the handle... (like how all the hair is kept inside an electrical razor)

a freeze-proof bandana. one that isnt all thick and neopreney, is water resistant (doesnt get saturated easily), is easy to breathe through like a normal bandana, and MOST IMPORTANTLY doesnt freeze up when the temperatures get cold.

if you make it, you have to send me one in the mail for free :P

heated ski poles. it would be pretty easy. just use snowmoblie grips. but make it use like AA batteries that are located in the shaft

As a fellow engineer I must say that it is definitely tough to think of an idea. personally I have already seen the keg that has a cd player with built in speakers into it. But if you could make it a Skullcandy one I am sure they would give you some dough for the idea. Just a thought.

especially when a teacher tells you to come up with one in a couple days. You gotta wait for a good idea to come, can't just think it up. But anyways, some of these are legit like the ski pole monopod. That ones nice and easy to do (i only have a week).

I like the idea of doing an avy beacon, but any kind of RF transmitter/reciever takes a lot of design time, especially using multiple antennas to pinpoint a person. That's a good idea, but a long term project
