I'm in the same boat as you, flying into Reno and we're looking at mountain(s) to go to/stay at. When are you going?

to answer your questions. Squaw is one if not the best in tahoe but is on the north shore. the casinos are all on the south shore, the big ones at least. the casinos are all very close to heavenly which is a very nice resort. Alpine meadows is also on the north as is very nice and really well priced (squaw costs like 60 for an adult). I do believe though if you stay on the north and make the drive to the casinos it is ruffly 45 mintues. tahoe locals help me out with this one.
thats my input. all will have nice parks and great pow skiing

Heavenly is the best vacationers resort. Its close to everything. Hotels, Casinos, etc..
It even has a gondola that leaves from the town.
Mt Rose is 22 miles from Reno. Its a nice place but it not in the same league as Heavenly. Heavenly also has the best views of the lake of all the resorts.

I think it depends on what your looking for.......if money is an issue and your in north shore i would go alpine, which is only about a mile down from Squaw and is only 39$, and it also has comparable terrain and snow.....if your in south shore than your best bet for awesome skiing is to go to Kirkwood which is about 25 mins from the big hotels..... even though Heavenly is right next to the big hotels, the snow usually sucks and the crowds are worse

I went to Tahoe last Febuary and there had been quite a snow drought for a while. Wanna know which place had the best snow while I was there? Heavenly. I don't know how anyone can claim their snow sucks. In the trees on the nevada side was 3 feet of untouched pow. I went up the road to squaw the next day and it was skied off.
I went to Kirkwood, Heavenly, and Squaw last year. For your situation I would recommend staying in South Lake Tahoe. You are 5 minutes from Heavenly, 30-45 from Kirkwood, and 30 from Squaw. You can go to any of them. There is also Alpine Meadows and whatnot. Kirkwood is the highest elevation so it's snow is typically very good. But so far this season, the whole area has gotten over 220 inches to date, so anywhere is gonna be good this year. I suggest South Lake.
We'll have you dead pretty soon.

If you're on southshore, go to Kirkwood.
If you're on the northshore, go to Alpine Meadows (Better park then Squaw right now and insane sick terrain + 39$ tickets + good food).

In my opinion Kirkwood is the best all around for the Tahoe basin, but it is not really close to anything (40 minutes from South Lake Tahoe in good weather). They do get the best snow of the area.
I am not a fan of Heavenly, primarily because of the crowds , price, snow, and terrain. There is some decent spots on the hill, but for the overall size of the place, it is a relatively small portion. However, they do have the best location being right in the middle of South Lake Tahoe.
Squaw and Alpine are both good and are about 5 minutes from one another but they are on the north shore.
There are some other spots like Sierra at Tahoe and Northstar that are a little flatter and gear themselves more towards family.
Sugar Bowl is another option, which does have some killer steeps, but it is not the biggest place out there.
Hope that helps.

Are those in any particular order? could you rank those base on pow, and then rank based on park?

I have only skied at Sugar bowl and Alpine meadows. I am no expert on tahoe areas, but if your choice comes down to these two, definitely go to alpine meadows because of the relatively cheap ticket prices (in comparison) and some pretty good terrain.
