Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Loon Mt...

i'm thinking about going on a trip out east during mid February so what can you fools tell me about these places?

-Basically cost is not a issue...through my work i get a season pass to all of them for free and lodging is very cheap. All of them are gonna be relatively the same price to stay at. (i work for Boyne USA resorts)

 -I want to go for around six days and spend three days each at two of the resorts. I'm looking to boot the weakest. My google skills point to Loon Mt. as the one to get rid off but its hard to get an idea of really. One needs to be eliminated.  

- I ski mainly park... I live in Michigan and have never skied a decent mountain before really... the park here blows and offers little to no creative features. basically, i want to shred some cool features if possible.

- Also whats all mountain skiing like at this time? Is the snow gonna be shit this time of year?

Any insight will be rewarded with mad karma and much appreciation.

go to loon the park is normaly sick, i havent been in a month so im not sure how it is now. Sugarloaf is also sick, im not a huge fan of sunday river, I cant afford it. Loon is a must best park in NH

loon for park and sugarloaf for all mountain. loon has the best park in the east and 2 years ago, they had the sixth best in north america. sugarloaf has the only lift accessible snow fields in the east.

i ski sunday river alot, and would def recomend it. but from what i hear loon is super dope too. i would recomend not giong to sugarloaf, cause they get closed down for wind a ton.

maine is always variable but sugarloaf has the snowfields which is big mt. ec. loons park is sick like they said before one of the best in the east. sunday has a good park and got a good snowfall last year so more glades were opened

Loon has probably the best parks in the east, but really if you look at it Loon really doesn't have much terrain. Then again the way you're talking is that you really wanna ski park so i guess loon would be a great choice.

Sunday River doesn't have the park that loon has but their parks are always super fun. Sunday River's terrain is prob in the top 6 in the east.

Snow shouldn't be an issue at all at that time of the year, so you're pretty much all set on that front :)

Oh woops... forgot about sugarloaf. Sugarloaf has (IMO) better terrain than sunday river but not quite as god of a park.

So bottem line; if you want park go loon
if you want terrain and park go SR
if you want some park and a ton of terrain go sugarloaf

Loon, MEGAFUCKINGWICKEDSICK park, progression there is good too, elements for every level, big jumps, tech set ups, two big ass stair sets, huge jump line, bonks, massive wall ride, every jib imaginable.  Ripping groomers, Rocking Glades, if thats not enough, you are actually an idiot.

Sunday River, Tons of tails, all decent to  sub par quality of snow, somtimes you can get lucky.  Confusing setup somtimes, getting lost is common.  PArk wise, mega poppy jumnps with choppy landings, random placed jibs, but a good variety, never skied there glades, I think they need alot of snow

Sugarloaf, Park features are pretty good, jumps can be big, but also a tiny bit choppy, jumps will kick you backseat somtimes.  RAils are variable.  This is a racer haven, littered with racers.  Loads of terrain, always good snow.  Above treeline face is dope, Never skied the glades.

fyi: loon will soon have its whole park open which consists of the best jumpline in the east imo

i have sources that have told me the entire park will be open with some big jumps, nice rails, and possibly the wallride. and they are gunna get dumped on on wednesday so everything will be groomed to perfection

it seems like the powder fields at sugarloaf are closed quite a bit.
if you like park, loon is a must.
sunday river is pretty good. not much challenging terrain, but it doesnt get crowded as easily as loon or sugarloaf cuz it has so many peaks. from what ive heard its parks arent bad either.
i would say loaf and loon, cuz sunday river is a hike but all three places are pretty solid.
as far a conditions go feb. has the most snow typically and there are a few storms in the forecast so snow will prolly be pretty good as far as ice coast standars go.

I woulld say loon ansd sugarloaf because loons park is ridicoulous and will be fully open very soon. They also have some pretty sick glades. Sugarloaf is sick cause it has great skiing(snowfields) and a pretty sweet park.  I dont like sunday rivers jump or the way the mtn is et up

yeah loons big park will be finished this weekends which means small jumps and a big line with 10+ jumps not to mention a bunch of rails and 2 stairsets, 2 wall rides, 2 pipes, and the medium and progression parks.  (breath)

Loon, best surrounding area, other things to do. Park, the best of the three, other terrain is the worst of the three. 2nd busiest. probably least amount of snow.

Sunday River, can be busy really busy, good park and night skiing, if you are into that. Rocking chair, has decent sized jumps, south ridge jib lots of features to jib. Pretty bad city/nightlife bigger town than sugarloaf area. Decent snow around that time of there+ I will be there. Widespread mountain, semi-confusing at first.

Sugarloaf, OK parks, best snow of the three usually. Not a whole lot of nightlife, smallest town in the middle of not a lot of things. Probably least busy at that time tallest

**sunday river and sugarloaf are the closer to each other of the three. Meaning if you go to sugarloaf/sunday river you can daytrip to the other mountain provided you have a ride.

Sunday river and sugarloaf are sick on days right after it snows. But once the wind picks up, it blows all of the snow off and all the ice is exposed (not fun for the park).  I have a pass for sunday river, sugarloaf and loon, but Ive never been top Loon before so I dont know much about it.

yeah I'm sure this weekend will be so dope with the new jump line up but up till now the parks been pretty weak compared to other mountains..

it doesn't surprise me though.. loon is always slow to get going but once it's up it's soo dope until it closes, which I'm sure will be the case again this year.

 loon for the park but gets extermly crowded ... unless on weekdays

i dont no if any one noes about the park to the far left of sunday river but it is beutifull ... 5 perfect  medium sized jumps great for new tricks like 7s or 9s and extremly flowy

If you're talking about starlight I have no clue why you would think that anyone would be spinning past 5 on those jumps. Biggest table is 10-15 feet and they have little to no pop. Its a glorified boardercross park with 2 boxes. Its fun to dick around in, but nothing 'progressive.'

Rocking chair, SR's main park, just got beefed up. last time I was up there it was closed for a comp, but they have a dece 40 foot step up, and a couple other kickers with pretty bad landings (not long, nor very steep, but you can always just lap the step up which has a fairly legit landing) and various rail features, including the RedBull One Hit Wonder (butterpad, trap box and rail). Beyond the step up is a q-pipe.

The jib park is real fun, pretty flowy if you pick your side right, but thats also a downfall. Like the X games course, the features are all close together. Its hard to hit all the features when they're side by side, but you can hit 4--5 different rails and then pick whatever you want at the 'bowl' at the bottom of the park.

In the jib park they have a wide down rail, a butterpad shed, a giant C box, up rail, down flat butter pad, shotgun box, flat metal box, stairset with downflat down + downbar on the opposite side, steep hip with tire bonk, then you have a wierd bowl at the bottom. At the top of the bowl theres a c rail that you can hop up to, or a flat rail you can slide/stall on. Theres also a tiny ass flat rail on the top of a hip.
Overall the jib park is pretty fun. Biggest problem is the constant flow of joeys pizza-ing thru the park.

And Maine is cold, windy shit so don't be surprised if you ski ice with a top layer of ricey snow. Just wax your skis with blue wax and you'll be all set.

yea Loon for sure for park i live about a half hour away, they definitley have some of the dopest shit in the east. Been to sunday river and it lands in the middle as far as difficulty goes, but you could ski all day and not ski the same trail. I think there are like 7 peaks at SR.

I haven't skied Loon, Sugarloaf does have the snowfields (They have never been open when I was there, early and late season) and really good steeps and glades, plus a nice superpipe. The park is decent, but Sunday River's park blows it out of the water, imho, and Loon I hear has the best park of the 3. I don't have much to compare it to, but nightlife at Sugarloaf is good. Sunday River has the nicest park I have ever skied, they have a ton of features, pretty good flow, and keep it set up nicely. SR also has a huge amount of terrain, including very nice glades.

loons got best park, good trees if you know where to look, and the best nightlife...plymouth is 20 minutes away and you can bet your ass that it wont be tough to get wasted for around $10!

go there, find a couch to sleep on at plymouth, and youll be golden.

sugarloaf also has a recreation center that opens when the mountain closes at 4:00. it has an indoor skate park, a basketball court, sick tramps, and a good work out area.

loon has an awesome park. there is features for all levels. they also have some super awesome glades but they are a secret and the location of them can not be exposed or else everyone will hate me including myself. i have never skiied the other 2 but i can tell you you will be hating yourself if you don't choose loon

Just like everyone else has already stated:

Loon - Best park & best ski town of the three.  The terrain is good, but there's less of it.

Sunday - A good place to ski, but can be busy at times.  I never really enjoyed any of their parks in the past couple of years...always seems to be something just off in them.  If you do end up here, places to go at night are the Foggy Goggle (Apres ski fo sho), Matterhorn, Phoenix.  Beware of the Bethel PD...they're always creepin.

Sugarloaf - Long friggin drive.  Depending on how long your trip is, and if you intend on staying at Loon for a couple of days, you might wanna scratch this one off the list.  Best snow of the three when its there...key word being "when".

My suggestion is honestly just to hit up Loon.  If you get bored, I'd venture up to Sunday River for a day or two, but that mountain gets old quick.

wow. someone here is biased. obviousle sugarloaf is a "long friggin drive" from mass, but why the fuck would he start his trip from mass. his best bet is to fly to porland, which is less than 2.5 hours from all three mountains. and the loaf has a better night life than loon. sugarloaf has bars and restaurants on the actual mountain. loon has bars, restaurants, and mcdonalds down the street.

sunday river has the most terrain, but their trails are wide to accomodate crowds.they also have some sick jibs, but are lacking in jumps. the one thing that sunday river has that the other 2 mountains dont, is night skiing, but only on one peak and if your from the midwest, you have probably done plenty of night skiing anyway.

loon has the best park on the east coast hands down, but the rest of the terrain is nothing specail.

sugarloaf is huge. it is one of the tallest mountains in new england and has some great terrain. suggarloaf is as close to big mountain as your going to get on the east coast. their parks are decent. they dont have as many features as sunday river, but the features they do have are set up well and their jumps are better.

since you are from the midwest and cant ski good parks and big mountains, i would go to loon and sugarloaf for sick parks and big mountain.

wow thanks a lot for the input guys... helped soo much...im gonna hear back from my manager tommarow about what kinda lodging will be available so I don't know if ill have the choices i thought i was going to.

regardless this was a shit ton of help. one final question concerning shenagians...

also we were thinking about driving thru canada to enter maine cuz it would be a million times faster so can anyone offer some insight about what the borders are like cuz my buddy is 20 and wants to grab some booze for the trip so we don't have to deal with that upon arrival? they gonna give us a hard time?

plans have pretty much been finalized.

were road tripping through canada and then staying at a local motel (wilson lake inn) in between sunday river and sugarloaf. Apparently its about an hour from each resort so based on the conditions were gonna head either way in the morning. gonna try to spend 4 days at each but if conditions are sick at one place then well go from there. Also i guess sunday river has night skiing sometimes so that will help determine our place of choice. cant wait for it should be a dope trip. say what up if you see us in the ... my buddy is gonna be toting his vx21k or digital camera trying to get some decent shots to throw together in a edit later.

I agree Sugarloaf is the best all mountain. It really depends on what kind of skiing you'll be doing.

I want to hit up Loon because I can ski it free with my Gold Pass from Boune.
