Are the X-Games still credible?

I'm just curious if anyone thinks that the X-games is still a credible competition anymore? I mean with 100% fan voting (big air), seemingly tie runs going to the higher profile athlete (halfpipe: shawn white vs. kevin pearce), and course layouts that test more the riders adaptability to a poorly planned course rather than their skills (slopestyle), do you think that doing well in the XG has as much value as it did a few years ago.

That being said, i still believe the XG are a huge value to our sport (and all action/winter sports) and love how much publicity skiing is getting in mainstream media. I'm just curious if people think that winning at winter X means as much as it did in the past.

Well Xavier took gold over Tanner and Simon, who both had a really good run. Nobody here could have predicted that...

As for the text voting thing, I just can't believe they did that. Even with 50% fan vote last year I thought it was stupid

^ thats the thing, i thought it was fucking awesome to see a relatively unknown like xavier win a comp (especially after the stupid little tanner vs. simon segment they showed before the comp) but i feel bad for the kid because it's like his win is one of the only wins (in either skiing or snowboarding) that wasn't questioned by everyone that knows anything about action sports.

i dont understand competition skiing that much, like all the people are really really good, how can there be a REAL winner...? i like to watch the comps just to see good runs and cool tricks, i dont care who comes out on top

good question.

think about this though, if kevin peirce doesnt fall in his last run, he probably wins.
the slope course is too short, its not poorly designed. After watching replays and thinking about it, thats how I feel. I dont think the crossover jump needed to be there, but hey, why not wow the public right?

Rails are completely unnecessary at X, they have zero value... sorry but a 270 disaster switch off for the top riders on the planet doesn't quite cut it.

It was fun to watch though, the danger factor was there and all the events were pretty intense. I was hoping to see more doubles, but better safe than blow out a knee.

I think the games are, it would just be cool to have the course a little longer, and less boardercross, god that shit is boring. Bring back the snowshovels!

x-games is still credible for sure. i know its just txt to win that was gay as fuck. pipe and slope was dope. give x-games their fan involved big air, we have legit big air contests all the time (JOSS).

not a big deal if you think about it.

ESPN should have donated all the money they made from the 10c text to win to standstrong for Riley poor or whatever his name is. So should have the riders, every penny. Its a tax writeoff and the right thing to do. If you;re going to rape your fans, at least give to a worthy cause.

This is a very good point. I think we saw this year that espn doesnt view the x games as real sports but rather an exhibition. X games should be the olympics of extreme sports but instead espn tries to make it into some kind of circus show to entertain anyone and everyone. Hopefully the mistakes made this year are corrected next year. To most athletes its still the most important competition of the year but if things dont change I think it will lose significance. The skiers killed it this year. props to them

I have no idea why everyone is hating on the x games this much, but X games are the biggest competition of the year so they are not really credible. Other competitions are what get you into the xgames, those are more credible. I have to admit, Dumonts double front was definitely the sickest trick in big air.  Kangaroos can be done bye everyone, double corks have won PK Hunder almost everything this year, but as far as I know Dumont is the only one throwing double straight flips.  As far as fan based voting goes, the X Games needs interaction so our pro skiers can make the money they deserve.  Without a high fan attraction to the x games, who will want to sponsor them.  Each year more and more sports and events have a text in voting event, this allows for the fan base to be huge so X games can charge big time corporations bigger dollar amounts for advertisements.  Without a fan base x games does not exist (It may exist but they would have to charge people to watch it).

I think the xgames are a starting point. i think they are kind of a fun event to watch but i dont take them seriously. i believe that events like the dew tour, us open, and JOSS are what really separates the men from the boys, while the xgames are more of a party/convention type thing. soon the xgames will disipate and events that are not so mainstream will take off and become popular.

This is completely incorrect
For starters Kang's cannot be done by everyone but Jon also did several other tricks, not just a Kang
And so what if doubles have won PK comps this year (there haven't been many so this isn't a helpful stat) and even if there had been who cares.  What happens in one comp has nothing to do with the happenings of another
As for the double flip, I would wager every skier who competed in x can do them, and if yo uwere to scroll the videos on ns you would see many members of ns can also do them

wow your funny... im sorry I just cant beleive the level of ignorance coming from your keyboard in that post. Streight double flips and even triple and quadruple streight flips have been done for ever. acrobatic skiing is an example, then theres warren miller films if you go back say about 10 years you will see people throwing double backflips everywhere because it was the trick to do back then. you say kangaroos can be done by everyone... well double frontflip is just pure hucking and timing compared to how technical a kangaroo flip is. not everyone can do streight double flips because not a lot of people try them, it just dosnt represent our sport

you can tell the number of true skiers watching the xgames when they showed the viewers poll: 85% for dumont.... wtf

the only thing that was really credible was the pipe. They may have tried too hard to contrive some drama shit, but it was a good comp and some great runs and good judging (in my opinion). and the judging for slope wasn't bad either, despite such a shitty course.

Big air was a farce.

How am i completely incorrect when you say Kangs cannot be done by everyone, but every skier in X can do double flips.  last time i checked a kang was a double.  and matt walker cannot do them as well as t rains.  yes Jon also did several other tricks that he has thrown in every x games since he could do them.  Yes Dumont has done a double front in X before, but his lawn dart spot in the middle was pretty fuckign sweet and obvioulsy I am not the only one who thinks this considering he kicked Jons ass in the vote.  Also How am i competely incorrect when most of my post was about commercialization of the competition.  I barely even elaborated on the tricks or skiers.  I have scrolled through the videos of newschoolers everyday and I still have yet to see a double front with a lawn dart in them.  I can tell you I have seen double fronts, none that even compare to simons.  Also if Jon saw the scores Simon got on the straight double flip, why didnt he throw one himself.

X-Games is the biggest window of exposure for freestyle skiing to both the newschool and bigger community... it helps the under-dogs that win promote themselves as athletes in the biggest light. We all know who deserves what, but we can't deny the exposure skiing gets (despite the illegitimacies that come along with it).

Jon also did a switch 10, which is not three times as technical as a double front (Simon also through an inveted 10 with a high mute, better than Jons male model/pete rose of skiing switch 10).  I will admit that PKs double corks are progression and are fucking dope but not three times as technical and certainly the ones he threw in X were not as good as others.  A double cork  is a sick technical trick especially how PK throws them I would give him first or second.  But Jon Olson and the Euro Model posse have destroyed Kangaroos like every pro skier destroyed switch 10s.  Although technical, both played out.

jon switch 10 against jacob was clearly a switch cork five into another cork 5. not upside down like he normally goes but definatly  a double corked fakie 1080.
the one he did against Simon was totally flat.

 double front supermans have been done in the past.

If I remember correctly Adam Schrab did one with a 180 at the end during the 2002 x-games big air.
tucked in front flip into a barany where he got fully extended before he spun the 180 in the second front flip.

I have a question, is this not something that has been done before? i mean i am not saying that it wasn't great, but didn't Jordon Monk, or maybe it was Brendan Buchar do a sw double back at Tremblant like 6-7 years ago? or is the old comeing back? like a retro thing? the Shrab brothers were doing front flip to front flip 180s back in the days of 13. i mean i know its a cool trick, i just dont think this is progessing anything, it seems like a step back. HAVING SAID THAT, i do like seeing the old tricks again.

First of all, yes, I do think the x-games are still credible.  However, they are very close to losing their credibility.  It's a tough event to organize, the text voting was just an idea to try and get more fans involved, and get the sport(s) recognized.  As it turns out, for the skiers who truly understand the difficulty and technicality of some of the tricks being done, the text voting was a huge disappointment.  If it had been only NS members who could vote, the results would be very different,  and along with that, I expect Simon Dumont would have done different tricks.  Unfortunately, that is not the case, and probably never will be, so we're just going to have to live with what happened, and there isn't anything we can do about it.  We can only make suggestions and hope that the event organizers take them into consideration to try and change the event in future years. 

As for all the hate towards Simon Dumont's win,  we all know that if the event had been judged correctly Simon most certainly would not have won, but that's not how it happened.  And, to be truthful, I'm glad for Simon's win.  PK definitely killed it, but there isn't anything we can do.  Jon also did a good job, but I'm glad the money went to Simon, he donated it all to Riley Poor, whereas (the way I heard it) Jon was planning on using the money for his new Lamborghini.  Simon, along with everyone on NS, knows he shouldn't have won that event, but sometimes that's the way things happen.  Let's just stop all the arguing and pointless bickering, and just hope that next year's X-Games are more fairly judged, and we won't have to have all this arguing next year.
