Petition ESPN - NO TEXT TO WIN

Who can we petition to take the text to win out of the X-games.  Can Mr. Bishop help us? He is one who helps choose athletes for the X-games.  Can John Symms help us? He works for EXPN.  Can Mike Douglass help us? How about Luke Van Valin?  Whoever can help us, we need it bad.  How does a double front flip beat a switch double cork 1260, or a switch double rodeo 1080, or even a Kangaroo flip?  This is just getting rediculous.  I could write for hours about how sad this is for our sport.  I mean, it is great that he is giving 10k to Riley Poor, there is no greater deed than that.  However, I am sure he could raise money to get that money for Riley anyway.   Do we really want double front flips becoming the new big air.  Next we will probably see a double back, which would soon be followed by a tripple back + 1080 (i.e. Triple Triple...you know where this is going). 

I hope the best for Riley Poor, I honestly do, but I hope that Simon never wins another big air again with a double front flip and a misty 1080 a la 2002.

yeah but they should have just done what they did last year. Let the fans vote, but have it really decided by judges, just to let people think they are making a difference.

well said "123ski". that was rediculous. sure the double front looked cool, but if this was a judged event, simon would have been eliminated right away. props to the other competitors who threw down, but were cheated out of a medal.

wow.... talk about crying...  Just because people don't think Simon should have won, you have to make a rant about how stupid those people are.  You are expressing your opinion, an opinion that digresses the progress of the sport.  You obviously love Salomon and for that reason you love that Simon won.  It seems to me like this thread really hurt something inside of you.

I completely agree, NO TEXT TO WIN. They should leave it to the judges. If you leave it to the fans then its not a contest about skill, its a contest about popularity. People will only vote for who they like the most. So fucking stupid

dumont was smart and did a crowd pleaser.  not every1 knows how hard a doulbe cork 12 is so they vote for wts most visualy appealing. thts why dumont won. that double was steezed out and doing a flip at the top was jus to amp up the crowd which is what dumonts know for. just like last year when the crowd bood when dumont lost pipe. they liked his run cuz it was more appealing.

I know this wont happen and is stupid to think this, but imagine how sweet it would be...If newschoolers had a percentage of the votes. We would have a live feed of the show and we would have a voting section. we would be the qualified vote of the public.

 I think next year they should just have all 4 skiers walk up on a platform and try to hype up the crowd. They could raise their hands, do a dance, tell jokes, anything like that. Then people would vote on who they like better. The outcome would be the same and they wouldnt have to spend time building a jump

I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe Simon wanted to win mainly for the purpose of getting money to donate to Riley?  Just a thought, but really, I respect Simon Dumont just like I respect any pro rider.

the issue isnt that dumont wanted to win, should be hated or anything, the thing is that his trick shouldnt have won. if any of the other riders had done the same thing and won, this thread would still have been made, and text to win would still be hated on.

The double front flip is a 40 year old trick. Don't try and compare it to Jon's tricks, no matter how many times he's throws a kang it will still be light-years more innovative than Simon's double front. End of discussion.

Some guy in the crowd next to me yelled to Jon after his sw double flat 10 "You're not getting my vote asshole! You have to do something hard to win!" Then he turned to his friend and said, "Once they start doing switch backflips, there won't be anything better to do in skiing."

I think this is the mentality of most X-Games viewers.

The reason it matters what tricks they pull is the general public will continue to have a misconception of skiing.  If they think skiers do flips then it just becomes an all balls sport with no style.  It really does matter, I had a cowork today say she would love to try snowboarding because she "saw the red headed kid in the xgames snowboarding a halfpipe and how cool it is that they slide down railings."  Then I said you should try skiing they do all the same stuff and she seriously didnt believe me at all and I had to show her my freeskier.  When Dumonts doubleflip gets more hype and air time then slopestyle then thats a problem.  Yeah ESPN is concerned about money but the ski industry needs to be concerned about its money.  Snowboarding didn't succomb to dumb ass tricks for the public why should the skiing community.

I am the biggest slopeside gaper I know, I will attest that the oooooohs  and aaaaahs from the lifts, for the layed out back flip are always overwhelmingly louder than for any other trick.  Simon's Superman is something the general public can relate to, which is what a televised event needs to do in order to sell ads and subsequently prize money which then entices more to the sport.. so forth and so on..

I think we should embrace the comp and recognize that those who put them on know what they are doing in the grand scheme of things. If we don't support this type of venue then it is my opinon that the sport will die a slow death due to lack of money and will be looked upon in years to come as just another fad. 

Props to Simon for being smart and playing to the judges which in this case happen to be the general public.

You are definitley right.  The Walt Disney Company, ABC, ESPN, Hearst, George Bodenheimer, Sean Bratches, Frank A, Bennack Jr., Robert Iger and John Skipper all know what is best for skiing, I don't know how I missed that one.

But in all seriousness, hopefully they build next years jump with a 70 degree take off, a 20 foot gap and a 50 degree landing, that would be so progressive.
