2001 A4 or 2007 Impreza??

So I am almost 17, and looking into getting a car of my own. Right now I'm looking at two options

hate to say it, but this isn't a very good place for car info. You'll get a few good posts, but 95% of NS thinks Subarus are handcrafted by God. (not saying they arent good cars, but there's other stuff out there and they aren't perfect for everyone)

i do realize this. but what other cars would you suggest (has to have awd, 4doors for insurance and hauling purposes, manual, and fun to drive)

well, for those purposes, this time i'd actually say the impreza. I absolutely love audis, but they are notoriously expensive to fix as they get older, and i think the impreza would be a better value and it would last longer.

you're gonna pay a lot to maintain the audi.  thats got a fair amt of miles on it and they are expensive to repair

the subaru has the factory warrantee left on it, and with the audi i can get a 100,000 mile powertrain warrantee

As much as I hate to contribute to NS's circle jerking subaru, I would go with the subaru.


The 07's look so much better than the new Imprezas.

The Audi will cost you the price of a hollywood escort girl for 3 hours, over time. Plus I don't like the hatch back.

Get the audi for sure. Its definitely higher maintenance than the Subaru, but is a nicer car imo. Besides, if you're into car culture, the audi/VW scene is awesome.

Easy question. 

How often do you want to be paying to repair your car?  If you enjoy your mechanic's company (and supporting his family) the Audi is a solid choice.

the subys a N/A right? itll be a dog, but way better for the money. id widen your serch, if you want a lux car like the audi, look around, many good deals to be had for farrr less.

^ i agree completely i would go with the subaru for sure. i had a 2004 audi and i had to do so much work to it. definately fun cars to drive but you would save so much money on the subaru in the long run

yes it is NA but still makes 173 hp. i would love to widen my search, my problem is that i need awd because i live at the top of the foothill in utah, so its basicallly either audi or subaru, because things like eclipse gsx and 300gt are just too small. and, i want a car, not an suv, so...

thats because noone wants the twin turbos anymore because a) the turbos go all the time and b) people always complain about gas, even when its cheap, so noone wants the shitty mpg of a twin turbo

word my pops has an 08 outback, same horsepower, but its an auto, its slooooowowwwww


but id vote suby. for 4gs more, you get 1/4 the miles, and dont have to deal with shit, + factory warentee is a good thing.

dont let the audi name lure you in youre gonna pay the same price as the suby eventually with repairs.

My mom has an 2004 A4, i love the car, i can't wait to learn stick so i can drive it. its fast, its fun, its really nice. I love Audis, but even though the one your looking at is a turbo and has the nice seats, its a lot older, has a lot more miles, and looks like a nanny wagen

I think you will have fun in the impreza as a 17 year old, its got a lot less miles, and its pretty cheap compared to a 2007 audi.... and looks better. if you fine a A4 4 door that newer and has less miles for that price, i would jump on it though, its a super fun car...

This is coming from a die hard car guy. Not some kid that just thinks subaru is god's chariot.

Here's the pro's and cons for each
A4
Pro
- Price you can easily knock a $1000 or more off the price of that car.
- Judging by that you want a manual i'm guessing you're into cars in which case the a4 is an easier platform to mod ie.. Chip, DV, Exhaust etc
- Despite what people say so long as the car has been maintain they are very reliable cars just make sure the timing belt and other maintenance items have been done.
- Comfort the audi is simply a nicer car to drive
- Wagon is nice to have
Cons
- When things go wrong which isn't overly often if its been maintained are probably going to be more expensive to fix than the subaru
- Color and interior are a bit drab

Impreza
Pro
- Reliable
- factory warranty
- kids on NS will think your cool

Con
- Not as nice to drive
- Price
- Not as much room
- Not as easy to mod

IMO go with the A4 with the money you save you'll be able to pay for any maintenance which may arise. The A4 will be much nicer to drive up to the mountain or any where for that matter feel free to ask me any other questions you may have.

Exactly, such bad reliability and very expensive to repair. My lil bro bas a 2001 A6 and I swear we've spent like 5 grand a year on the piece of crap.

word, if mods are in the future, starting with a turbo car is way better than trying to turbo a NA car.

i would go with neither.  dude if i were you and you want something a bit faster then that impreza but still fun i would look for like an 05 subaru wrx or even a forester xt if you want a wagon.  both are really nice and reliable cars.  I had an 03 vw 1.8t and it breaks all the time, and vw is same engines and stuff as audi sooo yeah, i wouldn't suggest it especially the 01 wagon no offence but it looks beat as fuck. 

thats just my two cents, but good luck on your car search.

get the subaru. The A4 is alot cooler but will be a bitch to repair. Also don't get a used car with a turbo, unless you like to have car problems

to add in, my family had a much older subaru legacy that maybe broke down once in all the years we had it, super realiable and an easy efficiant car

now, along with the 4 door A4, we have a A6 wagon, and im learning to drive on it. Its a nice car an all, comfy, not so responsive and seems to break down a lot, its a nice car, but i think i would rather LEARN on our old subaru (although it was much less luxurious), but i would like the A6 as a nice comfy car.

ooo, and last thing, i haven't tried the A6's speakers, but the 2004 A4 speakers are fucking epic, amazing bass, amazing sounds, just really nice, and they were completely stock

You will get much more life out of the subaru and cheaper repairs.

The audi is a sick car, but 80,000 miles is when most people suggesting SELLING an Audi, not buying one.

Once you get into the 100,000 range they can become a nightmare.

Same maybe the case with the subaru, but you have at least 3-4 fews of driving it before you get to it (and that is driving almost 20,000 miles a year, which I doubt you will)....

Subaru is definitely a better choice.

fist is dope, but eh needs awd, second is ok, but its the twin turbo and has a shit ton of miles(105k!) thats just asking for a 5k repair bill

I don't know how many manual cars you have driven, but from my experience with Audi's cars, they have very shitty clutch-feel. You can't tell where the engagement point is at all - more or less just guess work until your muscle-memory goes exactly to where the engagement point. If you're first learning manual - that may not exactly be the easiest.

Speaking from experience, my mom's S4 (B6 body) has the most vague clutch i've ever experienced. It doesn't make the car drive badly, but it does take some getting used to.

Also, looks like you want a Sportier car.
 Don't go for a base Impreza. 2.5L engine may be okay - but no Turbo on there makes that car slow as hell. Go for a 2004 or 2005 impreza WRX instead. You'll be rocking 215ish horsepower instead of that 2.5's stock 170ish.

What i was going to type next:

That 1.8t A4 looks like something an old crotch would drive. Go for something a bit sportier (maybe with some guts). Look at the 2000 to 2002 S4's, they are a bit more expensive, but you'll appreciate the 250hp/250tq on them as well as the suspension addons, sportier seats, and chasis tuning done in-house by Audi.

Not sure what your price range is, if its got headroom above the 12,500 mark, you can probably score a very sweet ride in good condition. Hit me up with a PM if you want some more in-depth help.

i havent had any problems with my audi(then again it is an 07 a4) but for the money the impreza is a better deal. less miles, better looking, will work better

Audi's are super unreliable past 100,000 miles.  They break down and require maintenance. Go with the subaru.  You won't regret it.

I love audis and I don't love subarus. With that being said, I own a 2004 Audi Allroad, with about 55,000 miles on it. Just last week all my engine coils went bad. I had to have the car towed to the repair shop (audi certified mechanic, it has to be) and have it repaired. Well, my extended warranty doesn't cover the engine coils, and so it's about a $500 expense that happens to almost EVERY allroad. I want to sell my car, because as nice as it is, I work as a hostess at a hotel restuarant and i don't make enough money to spend it all on repairs for my car. Go with the Subaru and you'll see yourself getting more for your money. I'm looking into getting a subaru wagon just cause I can't keep up with maintaining my really nice piece of shit car.

I'd much rather have the Audi. But it's got 80K miles for a not so good price. Drop it down a grand or so, then buy it. If not, the subaru's decent. mileage is good, goes through snow...

i would keep looking, honestly.  i have three buddies with audi's and two of them hate the damn things cause they are always breaking down and having to fix them.  the third guy doesnt care cause his parents are millionaires and pay for everything for him.

personally, i would keep searching for something else to just widen your shirt and have a bargaining chip of some kinda to get people to drop their price.  when i got my bronco (that has a supercharger in it) i managed to get the guy to drop from 6000 to 4000 cause i found a 1996 f250 for about 5000 and it gave me a way to get him to drop the price.  so, keep looking, just for use as a bargaining chip.

My brother drives a 2004 A4 1.8t Quattro. I drive a 2001 Forrester. His wipers were shit and he went to go get them replaced $80. WTF? I've driven his, pretty fun. But I'm gonna say the Subaru, parts are a lot cheaper. and its newer

they both sound nice, but i wouldnt go with the audi cause it has 80,000 miles on it and if ur looking to keep it for awhile, audis start going out at 100,000 miles usually and they are more expensive to fix.

from the standpoint of the Suby has way less miles and is 6 years newer. ide go with the suby..

 17 and getting an almost  brand new car, damn my first car was a 92 Taurus. until i could afford to pay cash for my current car.
