Unemployment and golf courses

im pretty sure you have to be a full time employee to qualify for unemployment

if you work at a golf course you can get unemployment money if its winter and theres no work to be done.

I am a full time employee I just work seasonally because its a golf course.

But would it be possible to collect if i was only a part timer? Just curious

full time = 40 hours or more, and i dont think part time can collect unemployment

yeah i dont think its that cut and dry though. i work 40 hours a week minimum during the summer. but i am still a "seasonal" (code for part time) employee. i wouldnt collect unemployment but thats because i dont believe in stealing money from you to pay me.

Its not stealing, its a legal loophole. And the business from which you work from seasonally pays a percentage of the unemployment, although it is taxable. And just because something is seasonal doesn't mean it isn't full time. I work 40 hours at my golf course in the summer.

I was unaware that the U.S. had an unemployment system. I thought you guys just had welfare. hu - show's what I know.

I will tell you how EI (Employment Insurance, aka Unemployment) works in Canada.

Every pay cheque you earn gets taxes deducted that goes towards the EI fund. So a Canadian who works from 15 till retirement and never once claims EI gave thousands of dollars away to a fund he never took out of. Most of those people look at EI as a dirty thing, where we are taking the peoples money, being free loaders, and generally lazy scum that don't contribute to society. They fail to see the reasons behind EI. Canada has a lot of seasonal work, and with that comes seasonal workers. Fishermen, Forest Fire Fighters, Farmers, Loggers, Treeplanters, etc...

I am a treeplanter, so I will explain it from my perspective. I work 5 months in the summer (Late April - Mid October with a month off in the middle) with an average wage of around 25$/hour. On some days I have managed to make up to 40$+/hour. Now, in the winter months, I can not plant trees... I sure as hell am not going to work some min. wage job for half the year when I'm qualified in another field to make 4 times more money. This is where EI comes into play. If Canada didn't have an EI system, all these seasonal workers would be forced into a non-seasonal career to keep a steady income that brings in enough money to live comfortably all year. This would mean the farmers would stop being farmers, the loggers would quit logging, the fire fighters wouldn't go into the forests... basically, I large part of the Canadian economy would shut down. This can not happen. So - the government creates EI. Now, I get money from the government for 4 months or so during the winter. Money that I have not only earned, but helped pay for, and will help pay for until I retire.


How you get on EI is pretty simple. First, you need to be laid off. Second, you need around 900 hours (give or take) within the last two years. (For your second time on for claiming EI, you can only use one years worth of hours and the amount of hours needed drops to around 500 or 600). How much you make while on EI depends on how much you made during the hours you are claiming.


So there ya go. Canadian EI in a nutshell.
