Find a recently published piece of writing (an article, letter, advertisement, etc.) and evaluate its effectiveness. Think about the following questions: what purpose does the writing serve? To whom is it addressed? Does it accomplish its intended purpose? Why or why not?
Write three paragraphs:
In the first, identify and describe the writing: what kind of writing is it, who wrote it, where does it appear, and what, in summary, does it say?
In the second, identify and describe the purpose of the piece. Who is its intended audience, and what is its intended purpose?
In the final paragraph, determine whether the writing is effective. Use specific examples to support your analysis.
Note: this assignment will require a “Works Cited” page. If you are unsure of the correct format for citing your source, consult the Bedford Handbook.
