Is College worth it?

i saw on 20/20 the other day they were doing a report on if college is worth the money and time.

many kids worked through college, have huge debt and have horrible jobs were they could have made more money working right out of high school.

with the economy in the toilet bowl it is in right now, do you guys think its worth it or not?

im will my 3rd year of college and i will say yes. im majoring in photography. sure anyone can learn and take photos, but this will give me a huge step above people who arent going to college. besides that, after graduation, my school have a 98% job rate after college.

my advice is to talk with your parents and counceler at school, maybe its not the path you want to take but you shouldnt leave your life up to NS to decide

its hard to say. So far for me it seems like its pretty much an extension of high school, only now you live there and you pay a ton. But thats just me, and i'm also questioning whether or not college in general is a good fit for me

i dont know dude, i'm making that decision right now.

my thoughts: (based on personal beliefs and preferences)


i want to take a year off next year, i'm a senior and plan on working construction full time next summer and possible all next year. this way i can build up a good economic base before college. i can pay my rent on an apartment,  most of my tuition  (parents are helping a lot) , and be able to do the things that i want and be able to have some extra cash for the first year of college.

so, i think college is a really smart idea, you can get a degree in a field you like and then with that get a job that you enjoy. you have to define a "shitty job" yah know? i mean the pay maybe shitty, but if its something you enjoy then it shouldn't really matter how much you get paid (granted that particular salary can sustain you and a family.) i mean yeah, if you work straight out of high school, you may have to get a job that you'll most likely not enjoy, and you don't have the job security or benefits that a career you get from obtaining a degree can give you. my dad told me a very valuable piece of information: if you can go through your life without having to work for someone, you've got it made. it makes perfect sense. my dad is his own boss, he decides when he takes a vacation and how much his salary is. he did this with the typical four years of college!!! he is the VP of a small company and is doing great. i think if you major in business and then another area of personal interest, you can apply that personal interest to business and then own a company that pertains to said personal interest.


i say go to college. fer sher.

Yes, college is definitely worth the expense. Just don't go getting a bs worthless degree as mentioned above. A 4 yr degree these days is like a high school diploma was to our parent's generation. Most companies won't even look at you without one. That is, unless you're looking to do manual labor for the rest of your life.

do 2 years community college, 2 years State university, major in something with future demand. College is def worth it, unless you become another success story doing something unique, but you're better off trying out for the NBA

yeah at these times you wanna get specialized so that when you get out of college you can make a lot of money and if the economy is still shit you go back to school and get even more specialized so that when you get out hopefully the economy has healed and you can slay it in the real world.

As far as your education goes its pretty fucking worthless, you can learn the same shit at the library. As far as how the world sees you and what place you will be put in it, that piece of paper called a diploma is imperative.

I 100% think college is worth it. I went to high school and didnt value education. So I am currently in my year off from school. Working a real job is terrible, and I am so excited for next fall. I will start school in september, and get an education that I will value.

But, I honestly believe if you dont know what you want to do or dont want to go to college. Then take a year off, and see what the real world is like. You will put a new value into learning and it will be the best thing for you.

Thats what grade school is for. Watch good will hunting. Matt Damon makes a pretty good point. But the other guy is right when he says matt damon will be flipping burgers for his kid on their way to go skiing.

I didn't go to college and I have a great job at a production company and I get plenty of freelance work.  I started my career almost right out of high school.  I went to college for a year and a half and decided it wasn't for me and it was a waste of my time and money.  I'm almost 21 and it's the best decision I have ever made.  It's not for everyone though, I just consider myself incredibly lucky.  You gotta make sure you have a solid future ahead of you if you opt out on the whole college thing.  Make sure you have a good plan in place.
