What happens when you die?

The thread about everything is natural has really got my mind going right now. So i thought i would
add another very talkative and arguable subject to the list for those who like to argue and for those tired with the other subject.

For me personally, i do not now what awaits, and i dont want to know until i die,
but i do know that i do not fear death.

When you die, your family and friends get to clean out your room and find all your porn.  Think about it........that thought sucks doesn't it?   It's such a tarnishing thing to your memory when they find out you are just a damned pervert ya know?   It's why I have set up a device that when my heart stops beating it incinerates all the embarrassing shit that I may own at the time.................no disappointment and shame from my death, PHEW!

As for what happens when you die, I try not to think about it. Obviously nobody can come back and tell us how it is, so to me, it doesn't really matter much now.

Of course as a young child, I believed everything my parents told me. Growing up in a roman catholic family, it was that, basically... if you're good you go to heaven, if you're bad you go to hell.

Now that I am much older I have formed my own opinions. I'm not religious, but I have faith. My belief comes from accounts of those with near death experiences.

There are books and websites and stuff that record people who basically died on the operating table and than were brought back. All of their experiences were slightly different - which I believe has a lot to do with the life you lived, how you were brought up, and it even seemed to be how long you were dead - but there were common factors in all the experiences. Feelings of indescribable peace, love, contentment. Seeing a glowing, inviting light, seeing loved ones that had passed on, including past animals that lead you to the light. A couple people said they felt great fear and loneliness, and i believe that may be hell.

Anyway... dying doesn't sound that bad coming from people who experienced part of it.

I look at it this way.

We either die and we go to heaven, or whatever place you believe in.
Or we die and nothing happens, but since we cease to exist (which is incredibly difficult idea to grasp) we will never know of our non-existence, just like before we were born.

Sometimes these feelings definitely are the breaking point between me doing something crazy on my skis or not... hahaha.

I know that is bad, but it's true.

in all seriousness, i believe you get dropped 6 feet under with a ton of dirt on top of you. and to be honest, it scared the shit out of me.

This also leads to reasons why religion is the reason things are today. If your fate was 6 feet under the ground, no one would have anything to live for, no heaven to strive for, without religion, we would probably be doomed, even though i think religion is a bunch of BS anyway

say you believe in reincarnation do you get to choose what you come back us or is it chosen for you?
do you now that you had a life before or are you oblivious to what has happened?

i read this book called "return from tomorrow" or something like that. true story,  it was amazing, about a guy who was in the hospital very sick and one night woke up feeling really good. he tried to talk to the nurses and stuff but they wouldnt respond. he was dead. it was an awesome book, mind provoking. you should read it

from a science approach, the first theorem of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only changed from one form to another. so when we die there is the possibility that we cease to exist yet our energy is passed on to another form.

the pinneal gland also plays a huge role in death. this gland is very tiny yeat it produces DMT. the piineal gland is 100 percent accountable for our brains processes in times of high adrenaline rushes and near death experiences and death

word, I'm a Christian and I believe there is an afterlife, but I just don't know what it is gonna be like. That is why I wanna live my life to the fullest, because if you are just "6ft under" you atleast had a fun life. I don't wanna be a desk jockey all my life, and have my life controlled by a dick boss.

when you die, you dont know you die. in fact you dont even know who you are. your mind cant even comprehend, because its not functioning. total loss of ego, total loss of everything really. so its really not that bad, because well, you wont even remember one thing.

Anyones guess is as good as mine but I have an unsubstantiated hope that I will meet a creator and he will tell me all the secrets of the universe, but if that doesn't happen maybe I can have an awesome death like dying in a fist fight with a gorilla.

that crosses my mind sometimes but nobody really knows for sure what happens when you die there was a report once that I heard about a 5 year old kid talking about distinct events from the vietnam war and people that were in the war ect. but this kid had never learned one thing about the war and it involved something like he died then he was reborn into a different life. I dont quiet believe that you are reborn into another body ect but it could happen nobody knows

think abot it this way; if you believe in reincarnation, you are probably reincarnated from something right now. So you decide if you remember anything from past lifes. Some people claim they do, some say they don't remember.

And i don't think you can chose what you are reincarnated as, at least not according to the major religion(s?) that believe in it. You are judged by your previous life, and reincarnated as a good thing (human) of you've been good or something worse (ie. insect) if you've been bad. I might be a little off, it's been a while since I learned about this stuff..


And about being burried 6 feet under.. That sounds scary as hell to me! I've heard stories about people opening graves and found scratch marks on the inside of the coffins. I am going to demand having a cell phone or something with me down there when i die, just in case.

for me it's hard to believe that anything, even heaven, can be better than a 3+feet pow day. theres just nothing that can beat it. and i don't think there is anything possibly worse than some of the mental suffering that you go through in life ie when you break up with your bitch, shit gets stolen, you get fucked over, etc. so there really isnt any logical explanation for afterlife for me but i do know that i am here and what im doing right now is pretty real to me so i might as well take advantage of it and have the best time that i can while i'm alive without regretting anything.

my dads mate was having some tests on his heart, and it stopped beating. he was revived and this is what he said happend......... when his heart stopped, he said nothing was there, like when you sleep, its jsut black and you dont think or anything, other than when you dream. but when he was revived, he said he remembered all his life memories flashing before him, all his childhood photographs etc were flicking through his mind, like he was being reset. that sounds buzy

I think that when you die, it's the same as before you were born, you dont know or think about anything.

I hate this but I accept it, I want to be able to travel the universe when I die and be able to think and watch the world grow and die, but sadly that isn't our fate so I don't question and live life the way I want to live it, because you can only live once.

also like someone said earlier, matter cannot be created or destroyed, like read this little exerpt, its about brith:

Matter is merely redistributed. every atom which makes us has come from somewhere else. so in death, matter is not destroyed. you arent destroyed, but rather redistributed into the ground. where you eventually get further redistributed back into another life form, like an animal, a human, or even a blade of grass. its all one big cycle.

thats my take on death.

i dont believe in reincarnation for one specific reason:

ever wonder why you never die in your dreams? you don't know what death is. death is a mystery to the mind therefore it cannot perceive it. you can perceive other such things like flying or being really good at something or being super strong, but death is a mystery to the mind and cant be perceived. soooooo scientologists sorry to disprove your beliefs but yea aha

i wish i was brave enough to say i dont fear death, but honestly im scared shitless.

i dont have any religious views but i really do hope that life just doesnt end, that i can still be some sort of being. just the thought of dying and then theres nothing is scary...so i hope something happens when we die

when i die, my body rots and decomposes.

my soul will continue in heaven, what that is like i have no idea, but ill be chilling with Jesus and if its just that then i'm amped!

people seem to have this adverse reaction to religion and i realize this is not a debate on the existance of god but its not about going to church every Sunday or reading the Koran every night or fasting, its about your relationship with god, and as much as i sin i have faith in god that he will forgive my sins and welcome me with open arms.

Reincarnation would be sweet, it could just be like being born again, i seriously doubt any one remembers being born let alone being a baby so you never know. But ive always thought that when you die you just go into a dream since a huge dose of dmt is released into your brain when you die AND your brain does not die right when your body does so for some one who is deadset on heaven being real could just live on in heaven through his minds last dream or something like that.

Most people who have been dead, have been "dead" for a very short amount of time...
Your brain has activity for somewhere around 7 minutes, so if they revive you before that point, (which they will because after going long periods you get mass amount of brain damage.) then you have an altered view on what being "dead" is. Normally though childhood memories are a huge part of this, like when someone is on their deathbed they may go back to memories as a very, very young child.

Everyone has their own ideas on what the afterlife is, but if you want to understand what people have thought in the past then read philosophy, it'll teach you a lot about things that are right in front of you but that you have never thought about before.

Death is scary, it's completely unknown and that is part of the reason that religions have been able to have the power and success that they do. As far as i know, it could be reincarnation, it could be a form of inactivity or it could be just an idealistic view of an afterworld... which i highly doubt.

I may not be interpreting his post correctly, but my understanding is that if reincarnation is true than we would have already experienced death at least once before, if not multiple times. We may not be aware of it in our daily cognition but it shouldn't be entirely beyond us during dreams and/or through the use of hallucinogenics. I know DMT provides us some insight into death, but that is not grounded in reincarnation but rather one's particular beliefs about death and the afterlife, so that isn't derived from previous experiences (as it would be if reincarnation did exist) but from a mental construction of a death experience in the context of our own personal belief system.

Wow. That sounded way too formal. I've had six hours of classes today, I guess I'm just in that mindset.

i know you didn't want to start a religious debate but i just want to say this:

so you believe in god? ok.  So you believe in a divine or supreme being whole created and rules the world.
While an atheist doesn't believe in God.

So in a sense an atheist is closer to God because they both believe in the same religion. Since God is the supreme being there is nothing greater and therefore he cannot believe in a greater being which means he would be atheist.

So who is closer to God:
1. Someone who believes in God
2. Someone who believes in the same thing as God

think about it.


And i love the argument about how we never die in our dreams because the mind cannot comprehend it and does not understand. Very interesting, i love it.

utter and complete emptiness, like before you were born, I wouldnt want to be cremated or put in a grave yard, because there is this program that will shoot dead bodies into space(the creator of star trek had it done), I think this would be cool , because space is infinite and hopefullly another galaxy or planet would find me eventually, maybe even revive me, or it would be ther most amazing thing that ever happened to them, or I would just plumet back to earth leaving a huge crator and maybe scaring the shit out of someone because they saw me flying down at them, or once enough people are shot into space(including me) we start rolling together into a giant ball and eventually become a planet made out of human remains

sorry for that tangent, ideas justy kept popping into my head

i didnt read the whole thread, but what ive read, i feel more scared in my life than i ever have. the fact that everything i have worked for, everything i believed in, everyone i loved in life ceases to mean anything once my heart stops beating has me at a loss for words. this is a spur of the moment thing, but right now i decided that there is a God, and if i belief in him and have a place of peace and comfort after death, what do i have to lose? id rather live for him here on earth than live eternity in hell. and if there is no heaven, no hell, no god, than what was so bad about following him in the first place? i made a good name for myself on earth and people willl remember me after im dead. to the thread creator, very good thread, thought provoking indeed

In the words of Dane Cook "Nothing happens when you die!!!!". No but seriously, I am catholic, not very religious, but I really wish that I was.  I actually believe in reincarnation.  I believe that you could go to a "paradise" for awhile and then you are reincarnated into something based on your past life.
