Cuff allignment/Canting Tips

Before i begin, let me just say that I do know that i should go to a boot fitter for this and I realize the possible consequences for doing this myself, but I would like to fuck with this any ways. So any advice other than "go to a boot-fitter" would be appreciated.

so i want to mess around with my canting a bit, i have 08/09 Nordica ignition boots with dual canting on both sides of the boot. my first and only real question is, for those who have experience with Nordica boots, will it be easy for me to go back to the default setting once i mess with it? Or if i mess with it and i am unsatisfied will i have to go to a shop tech to get it set back to its default setting? Also, any generall tips on cuff allignment would help.

Don't fix it if it ain't broken. I'd highly advise against messing with cuff alignment unless you're having trouble with your boots. Skiing in a canted boot if your leg doesn't need the canting can seriously mess up your knees and ankles.

Sorry don't know current Nordica boots. BUT cuff canting is different than boot sole canting and shaving down soles & doing risers etc.... Cuff canting looks after 2 conditions 1) bow legged and 2) knock kneed.  If u have a pretty good ankle and leg u can leave the collar / cuff centered. Otherwise u lower one side and raise the other side of the cuff.   If the cuff is hurting u may want to lower the side that hurts. Otherwise u may want to be bare legged in your ski boots and look in the mirror and and see if u r bowed or not. Hope that helps.

As stated earlier, the adjustment on boots that you are referring to is called upper cuff adjustment. Canting is actually grinding the soles of the boots to put a specific angle/stand height into the boots.

If you want to mess with the UCA, pull the liner out of the boot and stand in the shell, buckle the boot up. Your calf should be in the center of the shell, if not, turn the adjustment screws in the correct direction. Since those boots have dual cuff adjustment, you can turn either the inside, the outside or both of the screws to move the cuff. Sounds hard to do, but it will only take a few minutes.

My boots is a tiny bit small - can any of these methods add abit more room for my toes?

no one does canting anymore
it literally involves shaving down the sole of the boot to angle it in or out. its not really safe (we had a whole clinic about it).
canting today really just is cuff alignment, and i would absolutely get it done by a boot fitter who knows what hes doing

Wow.

It is VERY common to see racers with boots that have been ground and canted. Obviously you have to plane down the toe and heel lugs so the meet the DIN standards for bindings. It is a lot of work. Cost $200+. It is not any more dangerous than normal boots if done correctly.

the average skier, probably 99% of the people on this website do not have boots that have been shaved down.

and yeah, its very hard and tricky to do, so its expensive, and also not many people can do it or will do it, thats why its rare

Doing any kind of canting or upper cuff alignment is useless if you don't have your footbed dialed in.  Why? Canting and upper cuff alignment both only work properly if your ankle is centered - if your ankle is pronating (rotating in) or supinating (rotating out), your leg will be out of proper alignment and you will incorrectly "align" your cuff to your out of alignment leg.  Only when your ankle is in what's called "sub-talar neutral" or centered (neither pronating nor supinating) will you be able to properly align your cuff and/or plane your boot sole.
