this is the biggest bunch of bullshit that I've ever heard in my life. I'm sitting here in Minnesota freezing my testicles off in -30 Degree weather while still hearing about global warming. I'm sorry there's just no way that i can believe this crap. (Sorry if this has already been created as a thread)

frankly i agree with andy and youvgotsmail.... its a theory, its NOT fact, and to say with 100% certainty it is man caused is absolutely redicules....

and your whole, "they were wrong then"about what was going on in the 70s... whats to say we wont look back on "global warming" in 30 years much like we are now looking back on "global cooling"....

im all for cleaning up this planet, but to fear monger people into a corner and attaching the label of "idiots" (as many have used in this thread) is not acceptible. IMO.

its a big cyle, who knows?   also drew, check out some reasearch australian scientists are doing in reguards to sun spots... global cooling here we come?  (reduction in sun spot activity)

I just love the way the whole issue has evolved. What started as the "conventional wisdom" that global warming was the direct result of human activity...has now shifted to the "conventional wisdom" that global climate change is occurring and that it may or may not have anything to do with human activity.

well the climate is changing and there's no denying that because it is ALWAYS changing. i just don't see why we don't try to adapt to it but rather we try to reduce such an insignificant amount of greenhouse gasses thinking that it's actually going to help.

okay I didn't read everyone else posted because im not up for a book at the moment... but weather is totally fucked up at the moment, its freezing on the east and crazy hot on the west. yesterday I went skiing in a T-shirt and I was still over heating, it was +16 on the top of the local hill.

its funny how people don't seem to realize how fucked up our weather is right now... when was the last time you remember ridiculously brief and consecutive thaws/cold snaps like we have seen this year? I'm only 21 and I've never seen anything quite like what we're experiencing this year. I know my parents are quite baffled by it too. The increasing randomness, unpredictability and severeness of the weather systems we are experiencing today is exactly what scholars and scientists have been trying to warn us about for +/-20 years now (amongst many other things), but some people still would rather believe that its all because our "climate is constantly changing", and the fucked up weather is just a coincidence...

yes climate change is only a theory, but some argue that every little piece of knowledge we've ever known are only theories, and we can never really know anything for certain...

the sad thing is that us as individuals can't really do much to help the problem. Sure we can recycle, ride a bike, brush our teeth in the shower, eat organic foods and try to spread the world about climate change, but for every 1 believer there are probably hundreds (if not thousands) of naysayers who are just going to keep living like they are now...

Ok, I just asked my dad about this whole global climate change/ warming thing and he said fluctuation in global temperature is natural (look at ice ages which occurred before humans dumped CO2 in the atmosphere and the earth warming up and the ice melting which also occurred before humans dumped CO2 in the atmosphere), but human emissions are screwing with the natural cycle. He also talked about how a small temperature change meant a lot since the volume of the atmosphere is huge. He took college classes in biology, physics, and a bunch of other shit and has a Ph.D so I think he knows what he is talking about but I'm not sure. Do you guys think what he is saying is true or BS?

I could add more, but the chances of people reading the long, novel-like posts i'd probably throw on here is pretty small, and its not like i'm REALLY going to change anyones mind on here, since everyones so ridiculously opinionated, so whats the point? if there is no point in making a long thoughtful well articulated post than arent you actively contributing to the lack by posting "head shot"? (pretty "stupid shit" to bump a thread with no?)  as a result  cluttering the forums with your babble that has no relevancy whatsoever.

I saw what you said earlier on the page. I should of phrased my post better. It actually doesn't say anything like what I was thinking. You're saying that gravity is a theory, and a theory is something that can never be tested. Are you saying that if there is evidence that proves gravity beyond all reasonable doubt, it is still a theory? I'm genuinely curious because all of the scientists at my dads work call evolution a fact because of all of the facts proving it, yet it can't/hasn't been directly tested it should still be a theory by your definition. Actually explaining this and not making some smartass remark would be appreciated because I can't ask any of my teachers at school because they don't know jack.

Global warming may not be real, it probably is. However, there are many more issues that we should be focusing on that will effect us much sooner than global warming, such as the how the earths population will be over eight billion in 20 years. Global warming activists are a bunch of pretentious first world people who think that they have the right to impose their wants and needs on the rest of humanity, which is not the case. There isnt any realist solution to the problem due to the fact that the majority of the world is developing and they will need to use dirty energy in order to reach a more developed level, just as Canada and the US and all other developed nations did. Also, while I personally lean towards beleiving in global warming it should be noted that without a doubt scientists researching global warming indeed act as if they function on some kind of higher moral plane than anyone else and this is evident in the amount of exposure that is given to scientists that attempt to challenge their research.

This thread brings up memories of when I actually debated this topic on NS. Every one of these topics is the same though. A bunch of people who have been persuaded by different sources of media into thinking they know something, who all flaunt these ideas against each other.

I'm not naive enough to believe that I can prove whether it exists or not, or what exactly "it" is. I am, however, in Geography 12 (yeah, high school, whatever...) and will be taking courses towards a degree in geography over the next couple years. Maybe I'll bump this thread with some facts later, haha.

But even with my limited knowledge it is easy to see that what we are doing to our planet is not good. There are too many issues that are going to affect different areas. Not every issue is going to affect the whole globe, but with so many problems, every place is going to feel something. I'm talking about deforestation, overfishing, urbanization, mining, etc. All these are localized issues and aren't even complicated one bit, but our lifestyles will feel them in one way or another. Enough of them accumulating will change our lives some way. I'll lay off the climate/atmospheric stuff because I'd just be spitting out propaganda that I'd heard from someone who likely doesn't know their facts inside out.

And Drew, your posts are dope.

Some really good posts (on pretty much all sides) are being made.

"climate change" = higher highs/lower lows, then how come everyday is not a new record? i don't think i've seen any record lows lately. also if you'll notice the record temps are happening at intervals every X number of years (don't know exactly), it's nothing that hasn't happened before... doesn't mean we should all poop everywhere (metaphor for human awareness on it's surroundings). KILLA snow year as well whilst the polar ice caps are disappearing, sure, whatevs. but ya, just some things...

global warming is not anthropogenic... even if it was, cutting down on emissions wont fix it, it will just make things get worse more slowly.

im all for cutting down emissions and being 'green' simply because it'll save the environment, but it wont do anything to change the temperature cycles of the earth.

The whole "theory" vs. "fact" thing came up in the ID vs evolution debate in public school, not to go on a crazy tangent, but its because of what theory means in the scientific community vs. what the public interprets the word theory to mean. A theory is a scientifically testable, repeatable explaination of how observations (or facts) relate to each other. So yeah, gravity is a theory, because we've tested it 5 million times with the same result. In this sense a "theory" is really stronger than a "fact"

i find it fucked up that a bunch of skiers are doubting climate change when it is occurring now and will overall affect their sport. especially when that could mean an end to summer skiing at mt hood and whistler, shorter seasons, and (in many areas) less snow.

and i'm not saying doom to skiing by any means. the ski industry is arguably leading the way in the fight against climate change. skiing will survive.

btw i live in a town that got a 30-plus inch snowstorm in december, 72 inches total in december, and the snowiest winter on record this year. plus last year was the second snowiest winter on record.
