I gave up on making a ton of money years ago. I love what I do, and as long as it's enough to pay the bills that's more than enough for me.

Arguing about who is going to get a higher paying job and who is more successful especially when nothing has even happened yet, over the internet no less, is pure idiocy. Glad you are so excited about petroleum engineering, but you are coming off as a total prick, we dont need to read how much you are going to be making 5 times in one thread, and the psych major guy is just as big of a moron. Although I would tend to agree with your original statement that sociology/philosophy etc gets you nowhere, but I guess if you have fun for 4 years and go on to do something completely unrelated to your major, its all good in the end~

Haha, you can poke holes in anything if you overgeneralize it that much. Knowing ethnography, human trends, group psychology, and human responses to social and political pressures might be somewhat useful when the dominant population in this country is illegal and disturbingly poor. I thought I heard that might be happening soon. Knowing how people think will probably be pretty useful in advertising, which is one of the most profitable industries in this country behind pharmaceuticals. There's also other factors I look into when selecting a career like... well, not being a petroleum engineer. Have fun with that.

advertising may make you money, but it doesnt do shit for others.  other than get them to waste their money on crap they don't need, go broke, and then they become illegal and disturbingly poor.

and that petroleum engineer is in a more profitable industry than pharmaceuticals (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2008/performers/industries/profits/)

i only called you out cause you think engineering is a worthless future.  perhaps once we end up in a mad max apocolapyse world........but until then you will drink water, shit in toilets, drive on roads, fly somewhere for family vacations, plug things into receptacles and except to receive charged electrons, go skiing, go to the gas station and expect gas, pave over nature with a parking lot and need to put that stormwater somewhere, and yearn for a better tomorrow.

i'm surprised by the amount of kids up in here stating they want to be an engineer.  good work.

I have no idea how much school it takes to become a petroleum engineer but it sounds like it would take awhile for that certain concentration.  Also, if you do internships during school, you could probably get a clinical job pretty easy right off the bat.

Also, I LOVE psychology.  For me it's really not all about the money.  I'd probably still become a psychologist if they only got paid $20,000/yr.

Well then, what we have here is a big misunderstanding. I only called him out because he was being a pretentious doucherocket about being an engineer. I have nothing against engineering majors, just ones who think that their way is the only way to make money and be happy in this country. That's wrong and conceited. America is leaning more and more toward right brain majors every day, and again, that's not to say engineering majors are useless, just that he shouldn't be a cocky fuckass about it.

middle school (or maybe high school) history teacher. The pay isn't spectacular, but the vacation times are good and maybe someday some student will call me out over NS thinking he knows everything about everything.

either that or an air traffic controller.

Ha, orrrrr i might join the army through OCS, then go into either of the previously mentioned careers. And unfortunately i am already in school so time to choose is running out

you do realize how much suckier american kids are at math and sciences that they used to be right? we need a revival. so be thankful of it. and cocky engineers? at least they have a personality, and aren't the backroom-quiet-as-a-mouse-type of the engineer, so i'll take those too.

plus in a failing economy, obviously the useless fat gets trimmed off first. so sure investors won't be so trigger happy with golf course resorts and subdivisions and office complexes. so those types of projects will get cut out. but that's okay because we have tons of catching up to do on our current backboneless infrastructure which has not been maintained in any sort of matter that reflects the population explosion we've had in the past 20 years.

Oh, absolutely, that's why their jobs are getting outsourced. Doesn't seem to me to be much of a reason to be cocky. I guess it's better than the shy ones... maybe?

And yeah, you're right about the need for better city infrastructures, but I don't think those are gonna suddenly get more attention just because the economy is failing. Problems at the peak of the pyramid don't translate to concern for the bottom. When the auto industry failed, who got blamed? Not the guys at the top clearing multi-million dollar bonuses, it was the unions demanding (gasp!) reasonable wages for laborers. A little different scenario, but still, I don't see a sudden American resurgence in public engineering coming out of this shithole.

We'll see. Politicians make a lot of promises they don't keep, dude. I've been impressed with Obama so far, but then again he's not even in office yet. Even if he does stand behind it there's no guarantee it'll go through. It'd be great if it works out, but I'm skeptical. I'm a cynical motherfucker, in general.

Yes, I am well aware that's how long it should take, but I've already gotten my 2-year degree and am starting my "third year" of college and I've only been going for a year and a half so I should knock out this 7-year thing in like 5 years.

Also, for some of these engineering degrees and whatnot, they'll take 7 years as well. Why are you picking me out of the crowd?

nah, engineering degrees take only four years. BS in PE is 139.5 credit hours, and most others are 130-135

1st choice is to Sell Gulfstreams, Dassault Falcons, and other executive aircraft. My cousin is head of Aircraft sales and acquisitions for a pretty big firm so I have an in there.

I want to be a graphic designer... and a business owner.

My ultimate dream is to own a company like burton... makes skis, clothing... everything... and have it just be so sick... have a forum like this, ski's with the hottest top sheets you can imagine, the sickest jackets and pants and hats and goggles. i'd also sell like backyard terrain park kits and all kinds of awesome shit. Almost create like a lifestyle... I have studied a lot of cult marketing. It would be awesome.

looking at photography as a career, any input on colleges? also looking at getting the photo as a minor and business as a major and maybe some where into tourism

and no i absolutely dont wanna make alot of money i really want to bum it after college adn just enjoy my life how it is, enjoy kickn it and find a path in photography?

but then your PE license is 4 years after that. until you're legally an "professional engineer". is restricted word just like "doctor" or "lawyer".

Well yeah but at least you're working during that time, its not like you have to go for a strait two more years of school like a lot of other degrees.  You graduate after 4 years and make pretty good bank.  .And even if you do have to go for more schooling its usually paid for by the company.
