Hey everyone, new to the forum but been lurking for a while. I can currently do 180's reg and switch and 3's comfortably in the intermidate line at parks.  Plan to try a 3 in the large line next week.  I was wondering if most people try switch 3's before 5's?  I just recently got into park skiing and have high expectations for this year, feel kinda old trying to get into it all at 23 but what the hell.  No real interest in jibbing but have become obsessed with a few tricks in particular.  Live in CO and ski the Vail Resorts.  Look forward to learning from you'll and giving my input when I can help.

Welcome to the forums. You might get more help if you join the trick tip cult or the ASK TURPIN cult.
I can do right and left forward 3s with assorted grabs and switch 3s, but I haven't done a 5 yet. Might try one today though. I like to really get one trick dialed before I move to the next step. Switch threes might be useful for you because you would get comfortable landing switch on a spin, instead of just a 180. If you feel comfortable about doing a 540, I say go for it!

It's not necessary to do switch 3's before learning 5's, true, it will help with the whole switch landing after of a spin thing, but if you do your 5 right, it wont matter. Think of a 5 as exactly what it is, a 360 + a 180, you can do both, now it's time to simply put it together. There are two ways you can go about learning 5's, the first is basically just throw it, set the spin, wind up, pop, and keep looking over your shoulder (left if you spin to the left, or right if you spin to the right), once you get to 5 look back up the hill and land. The only real problem is people tend to over rotate this, (or in fear of over rotation under rotate), so I prefer method number two, more control and it looks better too. For the other way start by learning late 180's, go off the jump keep looking forward then pop the 180 over, this will get you prepped for the 5 better than a switch 3. Now for the 5, set you spin slightly harder than with the 3, pop of the jump and throw the 3 then simply do a late 180 after. i find 5's way easier than sw 3's a 5 is just like a three with another 180 i almost prefer them over 3's

ive never tried switch anything, but ive done plenty of 5's. i think it seems easier to do 5's

If youve got your 3s dialed definitely just go for the 5. You wont get hurt, just go for it. The key to spiining to 5 after 360 ing is just to keep looking over your shoulder. The first time you will probably fall but hey, we all do! so goodluck i hope you can get it!

Ya I have never tried switch either. Last year I only could 3, but this year I started first day on a really small jump that had little or no consequences to crashing (good idea trust me!) and I just kinda hucked my spin and it was trail and error, but since crashing didn't bother me on the 10ft jump haha, by the end of the day I landed a sketch 7, but have still to try a switch hit, so if you wanna go for a 5, I say just huck it on a small jump to learn and then worry about style when you step it up to a bigger jump. Hope that helps.

i find 5's so much easier than 3s,  when you do a 5 and your at 360 your looking right at your landing and with the last 180 your looking right at the landing again, so much easier than a 3.

The best advice that I've ever got when i was learning 5's was to try to bite your shoulder. Come in with a good stance, pop, set your rotation, and then for the first few attempts to litterally bite your shoulder, then look back up the mountain and you got it. To clarify, the whole bite your shoulder thing is so you learn to spin flat and you don't get in the habbit of looking at your skis/boots which spins you off-center. good luck.

sw 3s are waaay easier than 5s, you guys gotta be kidding me. best advice for beginners is pretty much: ride switch all the time (or more than you would)
