Do they actually close roads when it snows out west?

Nope they don't have snow out west. Only in Utah, go there. Colorado sucks.


But in the rare case we get some nasty rain in colorado they have gates on I -70 that they close.

every pass in washington has been shut down this week. we've had record flooding all over the place, the whole area is a shit show. But typically the road is only closed for avalanche control. I mean you could drive up there if you want, but there might by a 40 foot pile of snow in your way..

yea lots of closures within the last month, mostly because we got a shitton of snow, then a shitton of rain.
it is a major buzzkill when you know it's going to be deep, but the road to the mountain is closed. happens, albeit seldom, but it sucks when it does.

well idk if South Dakota is considered west but most the people in my town are kicks and fucking retards and take their gay ass rear wheel drive shitted up cars out when it snows and when enough of them get stuck the road closes.. hahaha

ya no kidding, missed out on the biggest storm i've ever heard of last year cuz the road was closed.. couldn't ride it till it warmed up to like 34 and it was all a waste... boo

yeah, washington has been a disaster zone lately, with some snow a while ago closing a few road, and now the rain is the real problem--with mudslides all over the mt. baker hwy.

i have never seen that. its not too hard to plow 2 feet of snow, which is like  the most snow the east has ever got in one storm.

The only place on the east coast that i know of that has avalanche warnings is mount washington and they dont have any major roads on that mountain.

why do you think they close smuggler's notch in VT from november-may? i have heard of avalanches occurring up there and it makes sense because the road is barely one lane wide in spots with massive cliffs on either side. i would say there is a six foot or more snowpack up there on a good year.

the pass's have been closed in my area for a couple days, they're open again now but there was no way out of the West Kootenay's for two days or so earlier this week.


That being said, when I was growing up in Ontario the roads would close there at times as well. Out here the roads close because of avalanches, but in Ontario the roads closed because of wind... the roads would just get mad drifts on them and become sketchy.

or the only lift that goes to to the top of the mountain breaking down yesterday and not being open till next saturday. that makes me mad. we got like...a foot and a half of snow last night too. its heartbreaking. kinda a buzzkill especially cause today was a snowday.

alright how about "come on avalanches on the highways confined to east-boud transcanada highway through rogers pass to keep me in revelstoke a couple of days longer yet not having any negative effect on anyone else or affecting the ski hill?"

the road that takes you up little cottonwood canyon to snowbird/alta is the most avalanche prone road in the nation.

it is frequently shut down after big dumps, but as much as it sucks, i would rather wait for them to bomb then get swept off by a slide, especially with the instability of the snowpack lately.

they even close roads in the midwest sometimes when it snows. especially in the dakotas where the towns are like 100 miles apart.

I live at Mt hood and the only reason our pass has ever closed for is major flooding and landslides. For the most part if theres 5 ft of snow and the plows cant get out your on your own.

yep just tried to make a 3 and a half hour trip to revelstoke. snowed a lot and roads closed so we had to make a detour we drove for 12 hours and took two ferrys shit sucks and now my camera is fucked and a pitbull just tried to attack me

fuck revelstoke!

Do they not know how to put avy barriers up next to roads prone to having slides nearby in the US?

And also, i got stuck in an iranian ski resort for two weeks last winter because the road was closed, yeah i could ski for two more weeks but its no fun phoning the airline every day and telling them the roads closed again and asking them to yet again change my flight to the next day AND also having to have food airlifted into the resort because the ONLY road to the resort that travels through the mountains all the way from the city is closed.

An avalanche barrier that would be effective would have to be extremely high, and extremely strong. avalanches have an enormous amount of power, it just isn't feasible to put one up for dozens of kilometres of road.

Take the Eisenhower tunnel, it doesnt close, but on the hour they run hazardous materials through and it slows shit way down. Loveland takes longer to get to keystone anyway
