so i went to a party and the bar on wednsday night. I got home about 5:30 that mourning and went to bed. that evening after supper my mom said she wanted to have a talk with me about drinking. I thought this was funny because she had long since realized that telling me drinking is bad or grounding me was futile. So anyway she said she wanted to talk to me about drinking. I said yeah i know already you dont need to tell me. she said no thats not what i wanted to talk to you about. and i quote, ' I dont know if you realize this but you come from a long line of alcoholics'. this shocked me pretty good cause i had no idea what she was talking about. she told me alcoholism was hereditary (which it is partly), and that my fathers side were notorious alcoholics. apparently 1 of my uncles is currently an alcoholic, 1 of my uncles was an alcoholic but hasnt touched a drink in 20 years. another one of my uncles was an alcoholic but hasnt had a drink in 8 years. and my other uncle who i was told was 'sick' and died actually committed suicide because he was an alcoholic and couldnt cope. she asked me if i remembered going to my great aunts hous and her alwasy having a cup of coffee... it was whiskey. so anyway this was a huge shock to me since i had never heard anything about this before. and just to be ironic my dad came home that night piss loaded drunk
(something he doesnt do very often). So am I doomed to become an alcoholic? I always thought of myself as a social drinker.

My great uncle died of liver complications and my grandad enjoys his whiskey too. My 'rents will get on my back about me being an alcoholic once in a while but I think my drinking is more associated with college life. I've slowed my drinking a ton lately, but knowing you have a higher chance of becoming an alcoholic is definately something you should be aware of when you drink.

you're not doomed to be an alcoholic. i come from a VERY similar family as yours, and yah, im 18 and perhaps i enjoy a drink a little more than i should, but that jsut means that i have to be even more careful about how much and how often i drink. just be careful, cause i already see my generation of my family being affected by alcohol abuse. just watch your habits and try not to 'endulge' too often or at least be very careful abouot it

yeah my dads side has a ton of alcoholics. My grandpa was but he hasnt drank in something like 30 years, then theres my uncle who i gather is an alcoholic, havent seen him in about 10 years though, and my dad is a borderline alcoholic, which really sucks ass. i guess i gotta be careful

dont drink too much, then. take it from me. over the summer i was drinking every day, morning and night. now i need a beer before school, right after school, after dinner, and about 10 or else i shake like mad. this weekend i went on a skiing trip, and i hadnt drank for about 30 hours or so, and i was in pain. my stomach killed, my head hurt, and my whole body was shaking. i couldnt stop thinking about alcohol. i have to go to rehab and AA now because its court ordered. take it from me, dont become an alcoholic. it fucking sucks.

yea i drink all the time and i am all about drining tons but being an alcoholic would suck ass. Lots of members of my family were at one time alcoholics and one killed himself driving wasted as hell. My friend drinks hardcore and his uncle was a huge alci and killed himself and i was best friends with his older bro and he drank but it wasnt a problem but he killed himseld too so it sketches me out i hope he doesnt do to much of anything.

ya man if its in ur family the best way to avoid it is just not to drink, or only once in awhile. Some of my good friends are alkis and there only 18, last year they would drink a 6 pack before school, then at lunch then again after school, its kinda sad to watch. Watch out for the drugs 2, my friend was all league offense and defense in football his jr year and got hooked on meth and coke and now hes stealing cars and in and out of jail all the time, he went from like 190 of all muscle to like 120. sad shit man.

Don't worry about it man, you just have to keep it in control. Sometimes you'll go over-the-top on a bender and do some stupid shit, but as long you keep your head in the game, you'll be alright. I got the exact same talk from my mother too. Hell, I even went to one of 'those' meetings, but said fuck it. Now I just give 'er. It's all good.

Ya, I think almost everyone has an alcoholic in their family tree, if they know about it or not. My grandpa is pretty much an alcoholic, but I think thats just because hes old and likes his whiskey. I don't think I'll be an alcoholic just because of all the bad memories I already have from drinking.

yeah at the start of the summer i got caught by my mom cause i came home drunk/on mushrooms... so we had quite the talk about my family and heridetary drug and alchohol addictions... and now i dont drink or do drugs... its a stupid thing to thow your life away for, lots of wasted potential in my entire family that is being pissed away on alchohol/drug addcition.

I had a friend who needed a new heart to live. They wouldn't get him one because he was an alcoholic. He tried many times to do rehab, but it only ever made him cut back. Well, one night when I wasn't around, he did every drug he could find mixed with a ton of alcohol to kill himself, and succeded.
Imagine the weight on his shoulders knowing that he could live many more years with the help of the doctors, but the doctors wouldn't help him until he could cut out drinking (which he could never do).
I don't know the right thing for you to do, but your mom did the right thing to make you aware. Now its up to you to find the way that you can prevent it from getting out of hand.

While I agree with this topic and post, I also think it may be a bit exaggerated. I do agree alcoholism is a real disease and problem, but I also think it takes a lot to reach that point. Take my life for instance. In college, I was getting completely wasted, piss ass drunk at least twice a week, and going out for a few drinks most other nights. I still got good grades and learned a lot, but I was drinking an incredible amount and smoking tons and tons of weed. WHen I got back home from college, I felt like I couldn't stop drinking, so I would look for an excuse to go out and get drunk, but it started happening more and more infrequently. Eventually, getting totally smashed just phased out along with the whole college lifestyle.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, you guys are all still young and living the life so to say. Unless you are getting drunk every other night, don't worry about being an alcoholic yet. CHances are, when you reach your mid 20s, you'll have moved on from the "get smashed all the time" phase to the "have a drink twice a week" phase.

It's in my family too, my uncle and grandma died mostly from that. It's all about realizing when you're drinking too much. When you cross the line from socail drinking to just plain drinking, you have to cut back.
