You need to realize that Jossi can do a switch double knee grab thing too, when it comes to a sick bag of tricks, I think Jossi owns Bobby.  Jossi just showed how well he could spin left and right, grabbing both ways, instead of throwing a double flip knee grab.  At first I was amazed by Bobby's run (he is amazingly tech), but now that I think about it, Jossi should've won, Jon is right.  Jossi absolutely kills it, and has a gnarly bag of tricks on booters, rails, and he destroys pipe too.

Jon really seems to have his head on right, I hope he becomes a judge when he quits competeing, he seems to know how to run competitions the right way.  I think that the Dew tour slopestyle goes back to the type of competition that Jon abhors, a run-limited competition, and it had inclement weather which made for 1 run even.  I would like to see more competitions that are more of a jam session, with more opportunity for riders to showcase more than just three techy tricks on three jumps, and judge more on overally style and performance.

Bro, you need to mellow out. It was just an opinion, a pretty fair one at that, like one your giving out now. You are being quite hypocritical in your post because not everyone thinks your way either.

In my opinion Jon is right here. You should have to grab and make tricks look good, as well as them being tech, to win comps. Otherwise we will just end up like aerials which is something I don't really think we want.

No hate to Bobby Brown, cause he is a very sick skier and will be one of the future stars of this sport.

The "direction that the sport is going" is linked to the fact that a winning run had a revert and a no grab double?

What a silly and self important proclamation. The essence of freeskiing is being able to do what you want, and how judges react in comps only affects the results for pros and the paychecks they get from winning them. Why any skier at the regular level should give a shit about the results is beyond me, it doesn't have any effect on they way I ski, and most likely will not matter much outside of a small number of pros who feel they have gotten shafted and risked themselves to less reward than could have been attained.

I suppose pros can be thought of as leaders in this sport, but it's about way more than that. There are people all over the world shredding parks and chutes right now that are the lifeblood of this sport, and what they do  and how they enjoy themselves is just as important as the leadership that pros provide. The pros might be leading with new tricks or this years fashion, but the soul of this sport is way beyond comps and the pros winning them.

bitching about a revert is sooo incredibly lame, I understand the message jon and PK are trying to get accross, but dont do it by saying jossis run was better than bobbys. to be perfectly honest it was the misty off the last rail that won him the comp, jossi played it safe and spun not so big straight rotations, bobby went upside down five or six times. JUDGES LIKE FLIPS end of argument.


the fact that these huge names of our sport are beaten by an up and comer and then turn around and say "that wasn't good enough, you didnt deserve to win" because of some odd rules theyve created in their head is disgraceful.

as i remember i read in that jons texst he said sth. like grabs are style(or sth. similar.)
well yes i lot of people can do a cork 9 but none of those 9s aren't same some are more stylish,some are less.sammy could maybe do a 360(without grabs) more stylish and better than simon's 12.if you ask me(and no one asks me) judges shouldn't judge with watching who can do each trick or who can's that would be a disaster.

  Jon is partly right. 1st of all he gives his opinion and we need that if we want this sport step forward. The only thing is , his opinion should be as good as any other opinion, pro or amateur.What i mean is  ,he should not control the thinking ,as sometimes he seems to do with some of his blogs, may be unconsciously. Having said that i agree with some of his points.Congrats Jon for bringing this thread!

In my opinion a slopestyle run should include  1.Both way spinning. 2. switch  3. different grab and not only touch the skis or even more your knees 4. innovation like Gagnier had over the years

5.as many rails as jumps with innovation on the rail too, not just spinning and touch the rail . 6 .Perfect landing which Brown had by the way.

In conclusion Brown impressed me but i think Wells shoul have won because of the points i mentioned. Unnatural is a hard thing to put in a run and can destroy the rest of your run.There's a lot of points to put on that.

Honestly I see Jon's point but I remember seeing on the broadcast that each feature was scored equally and the combined score was then calculated.  So they probably got similar scores on the first rail and first jump since both stomped a variation of 450 on and then leftside 10.  Then Jossi's right ten would have beat Bobby's switch ungrabbed double.  Bobby's Kang flip beats Jossi's left 9 and on the last hit Bobby takes it home with the rodeo/misty whatever it was over Jossi's spin off.

Since the scores where close that would make me think the right ten was scored higher than the switch double by about the same amount a Kang is scored over a left 9 which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Jossi grabbed but it'snot like his run was super steezy or anything, it was just more switch 10s I thought we were over swith 10s. Didn't Jon invent the kang flip because he was tired of switch tens in comps. Soooo what gives.

 This is spot on.  If you actually look at their respective scores, and break them down feature by feature, I think Bobby wins.  I'd go a step further and say that Bobby's first hit on the jump line easily trumped Jossi's.  Bobby's switch misty 10 was easily one of the most stylish tricks thrown, and was anything but "hucked". 

 The scores weren't based on the overall impression of the run, they were based on an allocation of points per feature.  I think it's actually a great way to do it.

 I'm surprised by the criticism of PK and Jon.  First of all, they both speak as if there's an established judging format where there are actual guidelines that outline which tricks are valued highest.  This isn't olympic diving where there is a "highest possible" score for each dive and the score is the result of that starting point, minus any deductions.  Until there are definitive guidelines for scoring tricks, subjectivity will preside over results. 

 I'm not advocating the implementation of rigid scoring guidelines, but if there aren't any, there will always be  controversy over the results of contests. 

 Personally, I fucking hate the format of slopestyle contests.  They are usually greatly skewed in the direction of jumps, and greatly favor the usual big air suspects.  I hate seeing rails and jibs be relegated to cursory/obligatory duty.  How ill was JF's butter onto the down rai?  He actually approached that feature with creativity, unlike the steady train of 450's onto a fd box. In training, I saw Simon doing 270 on's to fs swaps and fs 2out (maybe blind, I can't remember)...that's an impressive trick...where the fuck did it go in finals?  Yes it's a risk, but if the features are weighted equally, I'd like to see some shit thrown down.  Come on, go to any terrain park in the country and you'll see 14 year olds 450ing onto fd's.  I'd like to see slope courses designed in such a way where athletes have the freedom to choose lines and create flow in order to highlight their individuality.  How about some unique jibs, wallrides, butterpads, hips, spines, etc.? I just want a setup that allows riders to show their entire skill set as opposed to their ability to spin.  Why did a jump line with a couple of rails become the predominant format?  I loooove skiing, and even I get bored watching slope contests.

 I know that rant went way off topic, but I feel better, so I apologize if that was obnoxious.

I think if people actually read what Jon said without getting all hot headed, maybe you wouldn't say some of the stupid things you've been saying.  This is not about pro vs. am.  Jon is not hating on Bobby Brown because he beat Jossi.  Reread what he said, he directly states hes not disrespecting Bobby and that he thinks that Bobby is a likely candidate for gold at X.  I'd like to ask everyone to reread what Jon said because at present this discussion has drifted a lot from what Jon said and turned into some pro vs. am bullshit and a bunch of hate on Jon. 

Also, I don't check the blog really, where's this drug stuff?

Jon is right and wrong.

Every competition has a different purpose. Large comps that reach a mainstream audience like the Dew Tour and X Games are designed to expose more people to our sport and pull money from outside the sport. So the winning performances need to impress hard cores like us and others who
With that said, I think Bobby's was the best run for the Dew Tour. It impressed everyone equally. I think the Open should be the internal highlight of the most skilled riders.

Now for some sort of FIS or national series more important to core skiing, Jossi's run really should have won.

The solution is more competitions.

Now to my knowledge I am pretty sure Bobby's run just outscored Jossi's run by a little (1 or 2 points?) and I think Bobby's run was like 90.27 or something. It's not like he got a 97.00 for his run, it was far from perfect, and really wouldn't be that hard to beat. However due to the conditions that day a lot of athletes couldn't perform their best. The point being is the judges aren't giving perfect 10's for hucked doubles, they score them accordingly.

I honestly think Bobby's run was better than Jossi's. If you compare each trick on every feature I think Bobby slighly outperformed Jossi, keyword slightly hence why Bobby's score was barely higher. So Bobby didn't get a grab in his first double, it wasn't a best trick competiton, his run overal was executed better than Jossi. Also Jossi missed his grab in one of his 10's, so doesnt that cancle out Bobby's no grab double.

I completely agree. At some point difficulty should make up for some style points. Not the other way around. Competitions should not come down to pure style. There should be a mix between difficulty and style.

I agree with Jon for the most part, although arguing about who should have won is pointless, no matter who you're talking to. It is Jon's opinion that Jossi's run was better than Bobby's, and myself and a lot of other people agree with that, but that does not mean that Jossi should have won. The judges liked Bobby's run, Bobby won, that is all. To me the two runs are hard to compare, and obviously the judges preferred Bobby's run over Jossi's. They are the judges, not us, not Jon, not PK, etc. They liked Bobby's run more, and if Jon or anyone else disagrees with the results, they really can't complain. Everybody is acting as if this Dew Tour is the deciding factor in how skiing is progressing, but it isn't. There will be more comps, and there will be more chances for the athletes to step it up, and their will be more chances for the judges of those comps to pick the winner based on their opinions (not ours). If the athletes begin to get rewarded for runs that resemble aerials or lack style or are simply spin-to-win, then the competitiors themselves need to realize what they are being rewarded for, and whether or not they are proud of themselves for it. If Bobby was not proud of his run, I am sure he would have sacked up and told everyone that he wasn't, and that perhaps he disagreed with the judges. He didn't, therefore he was satisfied with the results, and the rest of us should be too. There will always be a difference of opinions when two runs like these are compared and judged, taking into account the technicality and style of both runs. If Jossi had won, we would still be having this argument, because obviously there are many people who liked Bobby's run more. This proves that both runs were hard to judge and therefore we need to cut the judges some slack and realize that it was obviously not an easy choice for them. There is no way the judges saw both Jossi's and Bobby's run and instantly decided that Bobby's was better, they debated it in their heads the same way we are debating it here.

So get over it.

regardless of judges, I think the biggest thing was jossi didnt step up his second run at all when bobbyb did. just my 2 cents. judges will always be full of shit, thats why I thought NAO was so great.

Have you guys noticed it is not just about the switch double rodeo 9. bobby went all out on that last rail. Jossi spun it while bobby did a misty 540 off. So dont say the jumps of bobby won it, it was the whole finish, he went all out top to bottom. I bet Bobby comes out to mt. snow and blows away Jon.

Exactly. I just watched Jossi's run followed by Bobbys and I found myself bored with Jossis run...2 switch 10s one which wasn't grabbed and just spinning to win off a box. While Bobby's run on the other hand had 2 dubs...one not grabbed..but neither was Jossi...And that misty 450 was just nuts and everything was pretty much stomped..So congrats to Bobby on throwing down in shitty conditions.

I think they need to take rails into account more. Even though the judges at dew tour claimed that they were worth equal amount it didnt show at all. I believe they just gave everyone good scores no matter waht they did on the rails. I dont see how people can get away with doing strait disaster 270 out, and making it to finals. Lameeeeeeee

dont be critics about judges, it's not an easy task.Probably  50% are Brown and 50% are Wells and you looked at the replay lot of times but judges are confronted with a spot decision.

You can talk about what you liked in a slopestyle run. That's true it was 20% for each feature but i think that's where is the problem cause you must have an overall impression to note what the rider brought as difficulty; switch, unat etc.

i agree completely. the thing thats always driven our sport as opposed to ariels is our ability to be creative...jib pretty much whatever we want
jossi tried to throw down almost identical runs where as bobby really tried to push it his second run and show something new. he did a run that most of those guys would puss out on.
so what he missed his grab on ONE of his doubles, he had a flawless misty 10 and the most creative trick on the the bottom rail that no one else seemed to even try very hard on
i still think regardless of all this, slopestyle formats should be changed,
thats why terrain parks like a51 are sick because you can pick the features you want and really make your own unique run

btw jon has some good points but he also seems like one of the bitchiest skiers around
just cuz you got a lambo doesnt mean you own the fucking industry

Some of that is true at its core but what it really comes down to is he's just whining.  He may have been able to put it in more eloquent terms than PK but he's still just whining.  I would have given Bobby the 1st as well because it was explosive, unexpected, and creative  It didn't seem like a run he had rehearsed over and over, he called up some extra shit and threw down.  Its for the same reason I think Shaun White didn't win halfpipe, the judges were just scoring explosive and unexpected runs over textbook ones.

i see in this thread over and over again the word innovative or creative. When i picture these words, i think of something that has never been done before. And bobby brown did that at the first stop. He through back to back doubles in a run. Sure people have thrown two consecutive doubles, but to do two different doubles i think is pretty rad. I mean, when van valin was commentating it, he was even suprised cause brown through it out of no where. I dont know what you want to call it, but the stoke factor was definitely there. I think to win, you need to come out swinging, even if everything isnt "picture" clean. he was the only one to throw two doubles, and i think that deserves to win, because its different in the perspective that he was the only one to do it in the comp.

on a different note... jossi is a baller.

As far as I'm concerned, Jon hit the nail on the head and I don't think I could say it any better.

And in addition to what he said, I hope skiing can go the way snowboarding has as far as expanding the industry and not having doubles be essential to having a career in the sport. Sure doubles are sick, but I like seeing them with grabs and I like seeing more than just Kangas over and over again (more hexo's and DJ's please Jon!). If you look st snowboarding, there are guys who are pushing the limits and doing crazy shit like T Rice, there are guys sticking to more simple but technical and stylish tricks, and there are guys just doing nutty creative shit kinda like Will and Andy. Hopefully skiing can keep growing as an industry so that there are more opportunities for skiers to get paid and have careers which will then make the sport more diverse and not so spin-to-win orriented.

I also think that people have forgotten how fucking good Jon actually is. Go and watch his segments in Propaganda and Happy Dayz, lots of those tricks are still bangers today. I would love to see Jon go out to a park for a few days and not do any doubles, but do every trick he can other than doubles and hit rails and then make an edit for NS/his video blog. I guarantee that would shut everyone up pretty quick.
