but Jon's a hypocrite,
I'm pretty sure this is more about pros vs. ams, newschool has gotten to a point where the difference is blurred, with some obvious objections like t-hall or dumont in the pipe. Sure bobby brown didn't grab, but he isn't a full out pro either, jon is just looking out for his best interests and has for years, JOI, NAO and JOSS. Jon safety grabs more then anyone, doesn't grab half the time and is the "king" of doubles. Without doubles he wouldn't be in the same position and everyone knows Jon doesn't grab them either. The major difference between Jon and a lot of skiers is that Jon is a businessman first and a skier second, if not he wouldn't have a lambo. I'm not putting hate on him, it's everyman for himself and he's just protecting what he knows.
By the way Jon, big fan of the video blog, a lot of the time it shows balling skiing for free, but the last 2 days have been pretty unsteller, first this and now the anti-drug thing.

I think Jon is awesome.  his skiing is awesome and so what if he has opinions about the sport that he has given so much?  He has more room to talk than most people.  Jon is really pushing the sport, not only is he pro, but he also hosts a shit ton of events, a lot more than other people can say.  I happen to agree with him and I'm glad he's giving his opinion.  Besides, it's a blog.  It's made for him to do shit like this....

I agree with Jon.

and people are way to sensitive these days.  Jon speaks his mind and backs it up with good points.  He put his opinion out there for people to read.  He gets a ton of respect for that, rather then bitching behind closed doors like most people would do.

Haha, classic NS response. You guys should actually read it, he has some good points.

Progression will always be pushing our sport to utter impossibility for the average skier. The level of riding at events is such now that if you havent been throwing down in the park consistently for 40 + days a season, you dont have a chance. 7 years ago, I saw some of the stuff being done at the US open and was simultaneously "Wow thats cool!" and "I might be able to do that!"

Its the way a sport naturally progresses - the high game gets more and more elite until usually people can no longer relate to it. Grabs help us bring it back to reality for a simple reason - they slow the move down and add originality to a manuver. Everyone and their mom can do a 720, but with the proper grab, it becomes a TJ-Mute 7 or a PK-nosepop-thing 7. This isnt going to stop progression and keep people away from throwing crazy doubles, but it will certianly slow down thje progression enough to let some style creep back into it. Otherwise, we might need a new brand of newschoolers to start newschooling.

I hear what he is saying but that happens in all competition where judges are involved. This is less about the sport of skiing and more an issue for someone who needs to win comps because its their job. When I watch Dew Tour I could care less who wins or if something was technical, I just enjoy it and it makes me want to go ride, just like watching a ski video. To me this sport has never been about what score a judge assigns to what I do, its about doing something you love to do.

really? find me a comp jon has won with an ungrabbed double. and a safety grab? still a grab. not just holding on to your knees.

ok so bobby didnt grab, and hes not a full blown pro... whats your point. full blown pros need to do MORE to win a competition than an am does? everyone needs to be judged on the same scale, regardless of their status in the industry.

not to mention the irony that you all claim to hate spin to win, then jump down jons throat to defend the lousy judging at the dew tour.

Just watch a Gymnastics movie about the same thing(wasn't bad, again no homo)
And the point of the movie was that the competitors took control of the comp and didnt leave it to the judges to prove a point
at some point this is going to need to happen

Jon is an excellent skier, no one here is arguing that. Like many of you said, I too have never seen him do an "un-gabbed" double flip. He does however grab safety (nearly spread eagle safety) with far too many double flips. Guys like Clarke and Jacob, their double flips are the future because the grab is absolutely perfect.

But I could not agree more with Jon, Bobby should not have won the contest with a knee grab....but his run (other than then switch dub knee grab and the lack of right spinning) was fucking incredible. Jossi and Henrik both grabbed really well, but Jossi took it one step further because he spun sw 10 both ways.

One thing I noticed when watching the videos from Dew Tour was that so many kids are putting multidirectional spinning in their run without grabs. WTF is that? Sure unnnatural spinning is great, but don't sacrifice style to launch a sw right 7 in your run.

I think Jon is right at some points. But if people stop doing doubles because it's not grabed or look like aerials, freeski will do just like snowboard did: the evolution will stop and tricks will always be the same. In my opinion, people should continue to do doubles an practice them. And someday, you will need to have a high mute placed in your double cork 10 if you want to win a comp. That's exacly what happened witch switch 10s, etc...

Jon use his notoriety to say things like this, because if Jon say it, be sure the judges will read it and maybe change their mind. But the thing that i don't understand is why Jon, mr-safety-grab, is sayin it?

I like Bobby's run, hes the only only person the inverted off the rail, he had 2 double flips, one didnt have a grab. I can see taking points away for the one double with no grab but to me he makes it back up with the aforementioned stuff no one else did. To me not going inverted at all is worse than doing a big trick without a grab. Just my opinion though.

my point was that Jon wouldn't have blogged about this if jossi wells had won with an ungrabbed double, referring it too the pro vs am ordeal. And my point was that safety grabs are the 360 of skiing, a beginner can do them with ease, and they don't match up with double. Charles gangier doesn't get enough credit, because his grabs go far beyond what the standard is, and i think its great that creativity is being discussed, and Jon's been a great for that, but after a double it isn't far before it's ariels. Its hard to create a standard in judging when competitors argue about what they should be looking for, just take a look at all the controversy within figure skating. Oh and yeah, i was wrong about jon and grabbing doubles.

I'm not typing it out again, but my comment on the site sums up my feelings perfectly...

I agree 110%, and we need to start skiing for the love of the sport or it WILL get taken in the wrong direction. This is such a critical moment for freeskiing, it's blowing up and if we fuck it up now it will never be the same... but Jon needs to practice what he preaches.

I agree with Jon. Bobbys run shouldn't have been 1st. Even if he did grab both doubles I still think he should have got like 4th. I only like a few double flips and corks. There is no need to throw 2 double flips on a 3 jump line then do a rodeo off a rail. Is it tech? yes very, is it hard? hell yeah, does it look like aerials? ya it does. We need to start getting into different variations without making it look like shit. The sport is getting bigger and the more we keep doing these aerial-style moves thats where were headed. Style always overcomes tech in my books. It doesn't mean we have to do flat 5s or cork 3's all day but it does mean we need to grab our tricks with different grabs and different axis spins. Any one who hates on Jon for his opinion needs to rethink what he said and take it in and think about it for a few minutes. He's right it's a critical time in the sport and we will take it where we want it to go.

in all honesty, I agree with Jon. As crazy as it was, Bobby Brown<s doubles did not look good, sure the conditions looked sketch as fuck, but that is no excuse. WHen I watched on TV,  I was like holy shit that was crazy, but at the same time it did not feel good, and my bro was like holy shit skiings gay, what a total huckfest. Sure Bobby can probably execute his switch double really better, but he wanted to win, so dilema, what will score better, style switch misty 9, or hucked out double flip, tahts the problem, i know its not all about style and style is different for everyone, but to me an important part of style is looking in control and that switch double was meh, but for sure like any trick, the more people do it, the better it gets, so dont stop doing switch doubles

1-Jon is grabbing pretty much everydouble  he did in competition and yes he'd still be wehre he his without those doubles, he just wanted to take it to a new level and push the double  thing the way he wanted it to go instead of double flips with knee grabs.

That being said  grabbing safety isnt wrong at all and I think they makes jon fakie double look pretty good and any other grab would screw up the way that double look.


2-Jon is a skier at first and a business man second he just happen to be one of the only true professionnal in teh sport who does everything he can to make sure he'll be able to keep on skiing as long as he want and not having to go back to school when he's done with the pro skier carreer.


3- Theres a lot of reason why an ATHLETE skier or biker should be against drugs. Antyhing that have any kind of effect on your judgement shouldnt be mixed with sports especially extreme sports.



The man have an opinion on whre he wants skiing to go, how to make it happen and he cares a lot about the sport. He's just a grown up man   who think and give his opinion  and I respect that way more then  most of the under20 kids thatthink the future of skiing lies in gangsterness.

I missed something. Where are people getting all of this stuff about Jon and drugs? I hope you're not all just listening to Lilhorsey.

Posted on the videoblog. I think it's more of an issue with judging than some grandiose "direction of the sport" BS that seems to be the knee-jerk reaction of everyone who doesn't agree with something that happened in a competition.

im all for making tricks look better, but harder tricks should have a higher score, unless they are not performed well. if everything was judged on how well the tricks looked, people would end up doing stuff like the perfect zero spin that twall does.

should a perfect zero spin be scored more than a hucked double? i dunno...

Jon isn't a hypocrite.  His blog vents his frustration that, in order to win or do well, he HAS to throw doubles and 10's and 12's when he would be perfectly happy making a 3 or a 5 look amazing.  He points out that using numbers over style limits the skiers ability to do what they want to do.  Best trick, not biggest numbers.  He also said that doesn't necessarily mean that big tricks are bad either, but obviously to dismiss smaller spins and such as useless in a competition is detrimental to the sport of freeskiing.

Ok, I am 100% with Jon on this one based on the facts I was given. that meaning I have not seen the winning run for the dew tour, but grabs are what makes what we do what we do. Look back a couple years to when the Schrab brothers were around. They were throwing doubles all over the place, but they had no grab and didn't really flow nicely. They didn't win anything, while everyone else was throwing what? 7's and 9's... might have been right around the same time Tanner won X-games big air with the switch rodeo 7. What makes ungrabbed doubles any different now than back then?

or we could just get some aerials dudes to learn how to slide a rail and do a bunch of double cork and triple cork knee tucks. probably easy for them to get used to the different jumps.


But I guess they'd need to get some poles, 'cause apparently the judges are docking points for that as well. Bullshit. Judges need to have an understanding of what this sport is based on. Docking points because of no poles doesn't really make sense, and scoring doubles without grabs over other super sick and tech tricks is... well, I'm not sure, it will make things get out of control and turn into a full on huck fest with no regards to style. Is that what you want the non-skiers to see when they watch "freeskiing" on TV?

I think Jon's wrong about Bobby's run.

If Bobby would've done a rightside 10 on his second hit instead of this new double, no one would even be thinking twice about bitching about it. His left-ten was flawless, and so was his kangflip. The rodeo off the box was straight up SKIING, just being ballsy, you know?

So the difference is that jump inbetween - where Bobby threw his new double and Jossi had a rightside 10.

A rightside ten is impressive because it demonstrates that you've got spins up to a ten dialed both ways. But throwing two separate doubles in a run is showing a fucking INSANE bag of tricks. Doubles are easily the ballsiest, most technical thing being thrown right now, so I think the absence of a rightside spin for Bobby B is excusable.

His run was like watching Vinne D's first 900s or something - he's ahead of the curve. That should definitely be rewarded.
