Two more slides at jackson, what's going on?

So from what i've heard, today there was a slide that buried casper lodge, and than another side over near the AV area. (word of mouth) The first one closed the tram and the gondala. the second slide closed the mountain.

Thats what i heard at least. anyone know any other news?

its called a mountain, any mountain with snow with open faces over 30 degrees (with this snow structure)  gets them. thats what is going on. they are just exadgerated right now because of the shitty snowpack out there.  when the snow pack is this shitty bombs aparently dont help, it depends if it breaks ontop of the crust or if the crust breaks and the snow pack colapses, because of rotten snow under it.

its attempted suicide to ski thebackcountry, and you should think twice about skiing steep slopes even inbounds, most of alta has been closed for almost a week,  and i dont forsee the castles opening anytime soon.

The problem, of course, is our old enemy, the facet-rain crust combination buried about 4 feet deep, which is taking its sweet time to heal up. This is an especially tricky situation as evidenced by three inbounds fatalities this season in the U.S., each at the top resorts in the country for their state-of-the-art avalanche practices—Snowbird, Squaw Valley and two days ago at Jackson Hole. If it's fooling the best avalanche experts in the country, it can fool anyone, me included. Avoidance is still the best policy.

thanks dude. yeah they had almost the entire mountain open yesterday, so i though it was over. are inbounds avy's this frequent

conditions aren't much better up here in british columbia. as for my area in particular, we had a big storm earlier in the month that dropped a bunch of light fluffy pow followed by a week or two or clear, cold weather... over x-mas we got another couple feet of snow, but heavier - so now we got an upside down snowpack with heavy slabs sitting on top of light sugary snow... I fear that stuff will drop down to base and slopes will go to rock.

Until everything settles out there (which might take a while) I think the park and side hits on the groomers might be a good idea for now.

Through word of mouth iI heard that one of the slides was the headwall, which is a big fuckin face, and it came down while a bunch of ppl were on it.

Headwall face slid. Hit Building at base of face. Ski partrolers, mountain guides, employees were all inside structures. No casualties. Broken windows and some structural damage. Things will take time to get back to normal

(Jackson Hole, Wyoming, December 29, 2008) At approximately 9:30 am this morning, after JHMR Ski Patrol had completed one avalanche hazard reduction route and were getting ready to conduct another, the Headwall slid naturally from the southeast aspect above the Bridger Restaurant.

This incident took place before this area of the mountain had been opened to the public.  A search for potential victims took place and everyone has been accounted for.

This incident is under full investigation and a more detailed report will be released at 4:00pm MST.

At this time JHMR will remain closed until further notice.
