update for all you fucking idiots:
if you don't wash your hair, the grease is worse than anything, and the grease/oil is slippery, so your dreads will either not knot together or fall out

I dont have any wax in my dreads. I got a dread perm and they said not to get it wet for a month.

a dread perm? what is that? is it backcombing? anyway, wax them! dont do it too often, but wax them like once a week for about a month. and roll them everyday. trust me with this. they will be loose as hell and look bad if u dont wax them up. i suggest using dreadhead wax. go to www.dreadheadhq.com

A dread perm is where they backcomb it twist it and then you get a perm. I'm not gonna use wax so my dreads will be all soft. I know people that used wax and like mine better because of the softness. I did some research before i got them and i chose the dread perm, but if i didnt have the money for it(150) i would have jsut used the wax.

I hope you all are using a clean-rinse shampoo and clean-rinse conditioner. Otherwise, the residue is gonna wreak havoc with your locks.

I never understood the backcombing, waxing, or perming. Why not just twist them up naturally?

yes, try to use generic soap/shampoo/conditioner. non-scented, etc, if possible.

Im getting some Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo. It ahs good reviews so mise well give it a try. The lady that put them in for me has dreads and she washs them with teetree shampoo.

dreads are not dirty, you just have to take care of them like any other hair, plus if you look at the shampoo you use for dreads, its all natural ingredients and smells just as good, seems like it would be better for every type of hair wouldn't it?

its mainly just soap. there are no conditoners or additives in it. it doesnt leave any residue behind. so it is better, but it doesnt make it as soft. it makes it pretty frizzy.

Whoa, I think people are getting a little bit too emotional here. There are a LOT of great points in this thread (I must say, all made by those who are pro-dreads or have/had them), but they're starting to get really personal. I do agree, though, that dreads are WAY hot and anyone who wants to get them, no matter their race or religious beliefs, should go for it! Those who were saying that people with dreads are 'dirty hippies' or 'dumbfucks' or whatever else need to lay off the stereotypes (as Brody said in a more malicious manner, haha... what a silly little guy) and stop making this so offensive. The thread topic was (if I remember correctly), 'Anyone else sporting some dreads', not 'see how much energy you can pour into rediculous efforts to bash someone's appearance'. If you don't like dreads, merely say that you don't like them, you think they're ugly, or white people look stupid with them (as benditto did). Don't go throwing names and stupid shit around to try to convey your opinion. Hot damn, just CALM DOWN.
