whatever happened to people on your friends list appearing black, i think this feature should come back, also those online in certain cults

It slows down the site ALOT. The way the algorythm was set up, it had to check every person who was online against every person who was on your friends list. This did this for every person everytime a page was loaded... If there are 200 members online and they have an average of 10 people on their friend's list, thats 2000 calculations for every time a page is loaded. Multiply that by the amount of people online again, and that's 400,000 calculations if everyone just checked a single page. How many different pages/threads do you check when you are online?

NSIM indeed. Although the current version doesn't tell you when your friends are online either. It'll be in there eventually.
