This has been done before back in the day, but it kind of failed.  Try again...

So I have seen a bunch of threads in the last few weeks asking for desktop stuff, and I though we could all find features we want if we have a ton of different desktops to check out.  Mine is pretty simple, just a rocket dock with Icalendar lite.  Basically I love the Mac layout, but I need XP for work.  Looks like this normally:

I also have the stack docklet on it so that my files just pop up (that is my pictures on the screen).  You can change it to fan out and stuff too, but mine just pops up in a box:

Post up yours!  I have a tablet PC, so I was hoping to find something that I could put on the desktop that I could handwrite quick notes on.  I know there are post-it applications, but I haven't been able to find one.  Maybe there is something similar.

Old Abandoned Missile Silo/Corrections School/Military School by my house, theres a whole underground city yet to be discovered there,its haunted too i guess, me and some buddies went on halloween at around 11pm and went back today just cause it was so cool...

haha im actually really scared too, we were there on saturday and no one would go more than a few feet inside, theres no lights at all and it's in the middle of the woods so its just spooky

nooo man customizing Linux like that is a simple matter of changing icons.

no downloads, no decrease in performance, plus it's free.

Ubuntu is a linux distribution, its a different operating system. and yes it and almost everything related to it is free.

To install you just burn it to a CD then boot from the CD. I found installation more simple than Vista/XP and even Windows 7 installation

If you're worried, try running in a VirtualBox first.

Dont install Ubuntu on a "Production Machine" until you know if you like it.

And dont expect it to be a problem free ride, you will run into problems, you might lose data(always backup!)

But hopefully you can have some fun learning some things, and solving problems.

Yea the main problem that drove(has been driving) me crazy is that there aren't veyr man good sound card drivers. But it was partly my fault, I had my Creatice sound card and my onboard sound card enable at the same time, so that messed shit up.

But like I said, try it in a virtual box, and see if you like it. Coming from Vista, I love Ubuntu, but I miss being able to play games. On the bright side, my grades have improved :p

So wait i'm a little confused. I come from a windows only family (I personally love mac) but is ubunto like a program that runs with linux? or is it a separate os like linux. and whats this virtual box stuff.

Linux is the kernel the kernel talks between your hardware and your software.

Ubuntu is a Distribution, its a bunch of smaller parts put together to make a full os(like windows or mac). Which pretty much means its everything you need for a computer, like a web browser, office applications, blah blah blah....


So pretty much.... Linux kernel + other stuff + programs = Ubuntu

But if you install Ubuntu, all you need is your Ubuntu CD. You dont need to worry about Linux or anything else like that.

No.

Right now for you it goes...

Computer - Windows XP - Your programs (eg firefox.)

with ubuntu it would go.

Computer - Ubuntu/Linux - your programs (eg firefox.)

Ubuntu/Linux is not a Windows program, its another os.

If you install Ubuntu it installs everything you need, you dont need windows xp to run it.

Alright i think i see. Should I partition my hard drive? Cuz i might want to run windows again at sometime. and backing up windows would involve doing what kind of thing. Copying all the os to a harddrive? or something else.

When you boot into the Ubuntu installer, it gives you pretty self explanatory options such as Using the full harddrive or installing side by side with Windows.

But when ever partitions are being created and resized there is always a risk that something could go wrong and your windows partition could get corrupted or something like that. So make sure you have a Windows disk handy, and everything backed up.

hmmm. I'm tempted to explain what virtual box is, but it's nearly impossible without an example.

Basically, virtual box creates a "fake" hard drive partition on which you can install another OS. So you can be running Windows, but have ubuntu running in a window.

Or you can have ubuntu running and Windows in a windows, as I do here:

If you don't game, you shouldn't need Windows.

Check out some Ubuntu features

There is also this cool feature where you can create the ubuntu CD, then run from that without making any changes to your hard drive.

Ubuntu default looks nothing like what I have though, there are so many ways to customize it like I have. You don't even have to download any programs to change cursors and stuff. I just changed to Ubuntu/Linux 3 weeks ago, so if you need help, setting it up is pretty fresh in my mind

Oh, it won't by the way. Linux is SO fast and so stable. Boot time is ridiculous compared to Vista. I have Vista running on a separate (faster) hard drive, and it takes sooo long to start up compared to Ubuntu

Plus there are only like 5 viruses (they have been created in labs, they aren't even "wild") for Linux, versus like 60,000 for PC and around 30 for Macs.

Meh I'm running Windows 7 in a VM and TBH it doesn't blow me away enough to drop 100 bucks on it. It's like a faster, prettier Vista, nothing to get very excited about.
