Bad day in Jackson

I was just talking to my buddy who is out in Jackson Hole right now. She said there have been mad avalanches going off all day, in and out of bounds. She was skiing down an open inbounds run with her dad and an avy went off behind her. Her and her dad were fine but three guys behind her got caught in it, and only one made it out ok. I'm sure there will be an official article or something about it.

But I mean that is some scary stuff. +++Vibes to those families who've lost someone.

im skking untill the end of the month. im east coast (no avy expierience) and skiing at jackson. should i be worried, what to do etc. im def not fucking with out of bounds but is there anything i need to do to make sure i dont get in trouble...?

the biggest thing you can do is to take an avy course and wear a beacon, even if your inbounds.

not necessarily true.  the problem is a bad rain crust layer they have and that could very well be a problem for awhile.

a beacon is a device that transmits a signal to another beacon. when i wear mine, it is ready to transmit a signal and if i were to be burried in an avalanche and people came to find me, they would obviously have their beacon set to receive that signal. when they get in range of my beacon then my beacon starts transmitting it's signal.

some beacons display a directional signal and number (the number typically meaning how many meters you are from the burried victim) and some only display a number. if your beacon does not have a direction indicator then you would work in a grid pattern to find the lowest number to track down the location of the victim, after that, you use your probe/shovel and hopefully save a life....

A beacon is a locating device that you wear while skiing. A standard one that i own looks like this:

They are expensive but they save lives. NEVER travel in the backcountry without one. There are two modes. Search and Transmit.  You put it on Transmit while you are descending and search if someone gets in an avalanche (and hopefully remembered to put their beacon on transmit) and you need to find them.  They are a good investment and are the MINIMUM you should carry on you when in the backcountry, out of bounds or dangerous inbounds conditions.  You should also have a shovel and a probe too.

And remember, just because you have an avalanche transceiver doesn't mean you are automatically safe from avalanches. An avalanche safety course will teach you what to avoid and look for. It will teach you to be cautious and hopefully help you avoid being buried in an avalanche. Eight minutes goes by pretty fucking fast.

Also, conditions WILL get better. Ski patrol is working around the clock to make the mountain safe and skiable. I think they made a mistake today in opening the upper lifts, even though the avalanche report said avalanche danger was 'considerate'.

It's deep! You'll have a blast, just be safe and smart about it.

It all depends on weather and snowfall. If it clears up and doesnt snow for a week the problems could probably be fixed, but if it keeps dumping (unlikely) then yes it will continue to be a problem.

Avy danger is unbelievable right now
Durango and Silverton have warnings for "extreme destructive avalanches on all aspects"
i almost got caught in a break today on top of a cliff
not a huge one but still damn scary

yaa shit at stevens was breaking all over the place. dropping into the parking lot i set of a slab about 10-12'' deep and 75 ft wide. scary shit because you know that's the layer that is gonna fuck shit up for a while

Apparently 1 death confirmed due to an inbounds slide at Jackson. Multiple slides though 1 burying 5+ people~

They should seriously just close a lot of the resorts in this part of the country for a few days and just blast away.  There have been so many slides all around.

Fuck this rain crust. Two inbounds slides today, one death. Both slides in places that are super popular to ski. There is no way to get rid of the rain crust unless it melts. So, no, it's not going anywhere. Or, we would need everything on top of it to rip out, and then get heavier snow on it. Not likely either.

These recent inbounds slides have all been heavily bombed and have not happened on first tracks. The snowpack is conducive to slides after more weight has been on it...ie: it's taking more than one or two skiers to hit the trigger point.

This afternoon there was an avalanche fatality in the Toilet Bowl area of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Two skiers triggered a slab avalanche on a slope that was previously skied and subject to avalanche hazard reduction efforts in the morning. Both were caught and carried. One was deeply buried, located with a transceiver and probe and recovered from a depth of seven feet in less than ten minutes by the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol. Unfortunately he did not survive. Our sincere regrets go out to his friends and family.

no offense to jackson ski patrol its not their fault, but it sounds to me like this stuff should NOT be open. they know its sketchy but it sounds like management is pressuring them to open. money is not worth lives people!

When stuff is closed , it means its CIOSED. not, were saving it for ski patrol to ski pow all day, that NEVER happends. Closures are for YOUR OWN GOOD  respects the ski patrol

WRONG!

If it keeps dumpng we will get a ton of weight ont he already bad layer which would cause most slopes to naturally to the ground and we'd start new with good avy conditions

Clear non-snow nights would turn the surface to surface hoar, which would be buried by a few other storms and then THAT would be the weak layer and wed still have the original ice crust weak layer
