Are 1080s really so bad?!

i just got a new pair of 1080s because my friend had let me ride them and i really liked them
i went to my local ski shop that i really trust and the guy there said that despite the foam core, they hold up pretty good
now im hearing stories about it falling apart midway through the season
are the skis really that bad?
!!!please dont start trashing them if u dont ride them!!!
i havent been out on them, but we drilled the holes for the bindings, so i dont know if i can return them, but im looking into it tomorrow
if they are, ill take any suggestions bout other good twin-tips

They ride real sick for a few weeks of riding, then the foam core starts to break down and they start to suck. If you're a not very good skier, or dont ride often they'll hold up fine for you, but if you ride hard often, they will break down on yah pretyy quick.

I rode some for a while before I got hooked up with some dynastars, I didn't have any problems with them, they may not be quite as sturdy as some skis but they are by no means a bad ski

1080s are so bad that Salomon has professional skiers who use them.

When will people realize that ALL SKIS have problems and that for different reasons (terrain, style, size, etc) different people will have different issues?

I rode them a few times last year and they were awesome. So far as the foam breakin down over time I have no idea.

Ok, i hope everybody reads this...the 'foam' in 1080's is power molded and is actually denser than wood. There is also a metaltex layer on top and stiffeners in the ski. I've ridden mine pretty hard for at least 45 days and they are 100% fine except for big gouges in the base and your normal bullshit. All these people who say wood is god don't realize that wood breaks down over time too....if you bend a hockey stick 1000 times it's gets weak and breaks eventually, well the moral is any ski will loose it's flex over time but I don't agree with these kids that say the 1080 turns to mush fast because they don't...

i have an old pair of salomon verse 7's.... they're not 1080's, but they're foam cored all the same. They've turned into noodles as the foam isn't stiff at all anymore, but as they loosened up, i began to like them more and more. they're built like a tank, other than the core, and many accidents and PTEX work hasn't killed them yet. they're the best, and only rock skis that i have now, and after 5 years, they still rock. my lines are starting to delam after a month of skiing, but 5 years of skiing on the verse's hasn't even left a dent on the topsheet.

salomon = pretty much bombproof.

what people mean when they say the foam 'breaks down' is that the ski will lose its camber or flatten out. you could take a wood core ski from the 70's and they'd still have plenty of camber. that is to say if the ski was laying flat on a table, you could slide a pencil through the arch under the waist of the ski. then look at 1080's that have seen more than 20 days on snow. they'll lie flat as piss on a plate.

I'm sure a fair number of the people on here are getting 50-100 day's a year on the hill...skiing that much will cause a foam core ski to last 1, maybe 2 seasons before the core begins to 'break down.'

If you're only skiing 10-20 days a year, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I use to have a pair of Salomon F9.1 3s (a foam core ski as well) and living in the flat lands, I was only getting about 20 ski days a year on them (out west that is, never near home.) It took about 3 years before I started to notice that the ski wasn't as responsive as it use to be. It began to loose it 'snap.' Does that mean the ski is worthless, not at all. I kept skiing on them for another 2-3 years (hard core bumps.) I definately noticed the difference, but they still worked just fine.

So I guess my point is; if you like the ski, who cares what other people think about it. Ski on what you like. And the more you do, the more you'll find out about what you like and don't like in regards to different skis, their construction, and how they respond.

1080's suck! I mean, I heard on this site Armadas are the best...besides, do you know who rides for salomon? Look at this list of crappy skiers!

Really though, Salomon products are great. I ride the 1080s and the Pocket Rocket, and both rip. Don't believe the hype, keep your 1080s and you will be happy.

I've got new 171 1080s and I love them. Last night I skiied on the 176 armada ar5s and scratch bcs. I still love my 1080s. they are sooooo light and responsive. both the armadas and the scratches seemed pretty heavy to me. I expected that out of the bc's because they have a different purpose, but the ar5's seemed pretty heavy as well. I spun big 3's with both of them and after my 1080s if felt like half way around I had to pull with my legs to get the skis around. Don't get me wrong, they were both wicked skis, the armadas were awesome to land on, thy just sucked you down to the landing and it was sooo solid, but people are always knockin on 1080s and I don't think that there is any reason too. except that they have been around the longest so they lost their trendyness.

I have 1080's and i really like em for about a year of skiing. But now they are pretty much dead. My thought is that they are a good ski for about a year after that you are pressing your luck.

This is all u have to know man 1080's are great skis, ive riden ever model of every year, sure maybe 5% have lil defects liek cracks form after a hard trick or chipped graphics or soemthing liek taht but 100's are solid skis, and in my opinion even being a line guy i'd say they are the most popular freestyle ski on the market, the only reason ppl keep hating them is because they have been popular so long they are starting to wear off, if u liek them keep them fuck everyone else you just bought new skis be proud wear em with pride, but if u reallllllly want different ones id recommend a head mad trix, rossignal scatch, line skogen sprang pro or a line mike nick pro, good luck amn, peace, Jono

well i had em last yr. (the spaceframe) and it the tip delamed. but that was the only thing i had a problem with. i thought it was an awsome jib ski. i like it. i just got the 171 so im very anxious to try them out tomorrow

I rode the blue 1080's for three years and they were bombproof. I just got armada's and they are so much heavier. I would stick to the 1080's; they're tough skis, and spin so easy.

I had last year Scratch FS171.... They were heavy.. they delamed. So I got the 2004 1080 181. using store credit that Rossignol gave.. I find the finish on the 1080 are much cleaner then the FS. The Fs didn't looked finished on the top sheet. Maybe thats why they fell apart. I find no differnce in wood core to foam core. Both great differnt pros and cons

HAHAHAHA all you guys that think a ski is good because pros ride it are stuiped, pros get a new pair of skis ever 2-3 weeks because in those conditions skis DO NOT last anylonger then that. Im sure CR and Candide dont actully care what kind of skis they are on, only the company that signs the biggest checks

actully wood cores dont last very long eitehr, sure they dont break as often but they get very soft after 15-20 hard hard days of ridding

My Pistols got ridden over 50 days last season and I haven't noticed them getting any 'softer'- I had Pocket Rockets the year before that, and I could tell tha they were broken in after a month or two. Wood cores are the way to go.

dude the 1080s are a sick ski the foam core holds up just fine it is not the same type of foam used in the 80's it is a little better and with the metel top sheet they give a good response i got TM's this year and i like them a little better but that does not take anything away from the fack that the 1080's are a sick ski

Yeah, it's 'SPACEFRAME!', which is nothing more than glorified foam...Salomon calling their cores spaceframe is like calling a ditch with snow in it a halfpipe...you get my drift. It's still foam...and that's reason enough to stay away from them. But hey, if they work for you, then go for it.

updawg, your seth pistols have not gotten softer yet? that is a big fucking surprise, given that seth pistols are the softest ski that you can buy. it must be the wood core that is preventing your extremely soft skis from getting softer -- wood is like some sort of miracle material. or maybe old wood-core skis from the 70's maintain their camber because nobody was spending entire days jumping on them. this whole wood-foam debate is absolutely ridiculous. skis wear out from jumping. it does not matter what the core is made of. that is just my opinion. i mean, i am not a materials engineer like the rest of you guys, but, i know what i know.

a lot of the pros that ride 1080s ride them with a wood core. I didn't believe it when I first heard it but my friend works at a ski shop and they are in the catalog.

Simmers- have you ever flexed the Pistols at a 10 degree angle to the floor? They're stiff where it matters. The tip and tail are soft, but the center of the ski is stiff, so you can still have a stable ski, yet be able to get some pop out of them....blah blah blah, you already know all this I'm sure. I'll agree...the debate is ridiculous, and good call...just get out and ski.

yeah i don;t know if he did the flex right or not, but people need to learn how to actually flex a ski...not just holding the tip and pushing when it's straight up in the air

if they are 1260's then yes, and i also ride 1080's, my old blue ones have gone the way of rail skis, and they are holding up amazingly well still after 3 years of riding on them. i popped the caps off and delammed the tips from way overshooting a table, but nothin a little epoxy and a few pop rivets couldnt fix. now they are bombproof, and still stiff enough. the silver ones i got last year would be in good shape if someone didnt run them over in the lift line so bad that the topsheet is cut down to the core and now starting to peel. so yeah, you really cant go wrong with the 1080's, its a really good all around ski

main thing to 1080 rye bread: salomons may or may not be the best skis you can get, but they are pretty fucking good. just go out and ski, and you will have fun.
