digital video camera

what is a good all-around digital video camera (probably miniDV)? its not gonna be for skiing, and money isnt too much of a factor...any suggestions?

He said 'money isn't a factor', but I don't think he'll be willing to spend thousands on an XL1. Best bet would be a used VX1000 or GL1. I gt my GL1 on eBay and it rules.

actually im willing to bet he said money isn't a factor because... money isn't a factor. Xl-1 is only 1,000 more than a gl1.

I just bought a Panasonic GS70, lower end 3CCD camera. It's fucking brilliant!!!

I got it for $2300 Australian with tapes and bags and crap (~$1600 US).

if money isnt really a factor there are only 3 choices (unless you want a brodcast cam).
in 3rd place xl1s
in 2nd panasonic 100dvx
in 1st jvc hd10u

The GS70 is a piece of shit. A midrange sony 1 chip beats it hands-down. 3 CCDs don't mean shit if they are poor quality.

Great camera/good deals - Sony VX2000
Slightly better camera/no deals - Sony VX2100 (just came out)

Even fancier - Sony PD150/170 ('pro' VX2000/2100)

Panasonic DVX100 - this has 24P (like film) but I have heard it is not a rugged as the Sonys.

Cannon GL2 - Sony VX is better
Cannon GL1 - More than you need/want. It has interchangable everything (lenses, viewfinder, mic, etc...)

All these cameras are 3 chip. They all have manual controls, some have more, some have less. All are good cameras.

I just order the PD170, but it isn't realy for on snow filming.

yeah for sure the sony vx2000...I use it a shitload for my film classes and my after effects classes and it never fails on me

for lower end cams the only options are sony and canon. seriously anything under $1000 usd they are the only decent cams. and the vx2000 isnt better then the gl2/. they both have different strengths and weaknesses and i would rank them somewhere around the same if not the gl2 is better. havnt seen the 2100 in action. and the pd150/170 are sick because you can shoot in true dv. the gl1 does NOT have a replaceable lense. you probably just mixed it up with the xl1. but that really isnt that great for everyday practicle video because of the lack of lcd and the lenses are atleast $1300usd each.

canon optura series are pretty good for a pretty good price

but otherwise go for a vx2000 or gl something, because i'd love you more, still non-homosexually of course

My bad, I was think XL1s, not GL1 (I don't think they make it anymore).
The VX has better low light capabilities than the GL2. The GL2 has 20x optical zoom though.

The VX & PD are the same CCD/picture. They just have different audio and are a little different in some of the controls. They all shoot true DV. I assume you mean DVCAM (only the PD does that). That is just a more robust DV tape (also has shorter tapes)

yes i know only the pd does that. all of the sony pro models do. and yes i consider dvcam to be true dv.

the only thing sony cams have on canon is nightshot and more audio controls. With the settings tuned in right, my gl1 gets better color than any sony i have seen.

k heres the deal as far as im concerned

ive been a Canon user for years. Everything from my super8mm camera to my Xl1s are all Canon.

Canon Gl-Xl has a perfect mix of everything. Frame movie mode to match the look of film as close as it can without being a 24p camera. Gain settings for low light situations or to add a fake 'grain' look to the picture. White balance, optional xlr audio input, ect ect

xl1s has 4 lenses to chose from due to the fact that they have an interchangeable lens format. Onboard you have a fully outfitted side just for audio controls, settings for gain, white balance, AE shift, presets for different color settings and warmths, a 16x optical zoom lens, color or monochrome viewfinder, an excellent ccd's

I believe canon has the sony vxwhatever model its up to now in quality. Just my opinion, but i figured id share it

in my opinion canon makes the best quality stuff but i dont think they are challanging the market. jvc hs the new hd which i hear is good, never tried it. panasonic has the dvx100 which is by far my fav cam. i like it much better then the xl1s. the xl1s is sick but it isnt practicly really. by the time you add the xlr adapter and a screen then its basically a broadcast cam. not really practicly for shooting action sports close up.
