i looked at the various sites. sublux, nomics, bottlecap productions, etc., and i have come to the following conclusion: ski streetwear companies aren't very cool. siver is okay, i guess, but starting a t-shirt company seems to be getting awfully played out. and everybody says that they are innovating and progressing the sport -- by making t-shirts? wtf? and, to all you guys repping ulta-matum, your site does not exist.

i do support things that i like. i like skiing. buying a t-shirt because the guy who made the design on it likes to ski does not support skiing; it supports t-shirt making. i do not give a fuck about t-shirt making. so, i do not support it. skate clothing is gay, too. i don't care whether or not people wear nomics, i just am tired of hearing people claim that they 'progress the sport' by making another fucking t-shirt.

i think you are thinking about this with a skewed perspective. These new 'streetwear' companies are starting from within the sport, and from within the industry that is being established. The companies are all new this year, and hence they do not have that many products. T-shirts are the easiet to produce, and the easiest way to establish a product sales, and revenue report to present to investors and banks to get more money to make more products. In a few years, companies like Nomics and Sublux will hopefully be established enough to provide more products and really make a difference.

the company missions to revolutionize the sport is the attitude behind the people that run the companies. It is the same attitude that dictates direction of the company. If you can follow my logic, the company is playing a vital role in the sport because it provides products for the sport.

In the case of Nomics, they are not specific to skiing alone. Nomics is open to everybody. It doesnt matter if you skate, ski, snowboard, or if you are not into any of the sports, but you are down with the mission, you can rep Nomics.

One last note, when Steve Hurley started his company, he had 2 hoodies, 2 t-shirts, a hat, and a sticker machine. You all know what Hurley Clothing is now after only a short time.

i just think this street wear stuff has gotten out of hand. most of these companys will fall within the next couple years i believe. kinda like all those rider based companys for snowboarding in the 90s

Very few of these 'core companies' are going to stay in business very long, let alone become profitable enough to be able to start to make tight shit...Siver makes sicker clothes than Nomics, SUblux, ultamatum, whatever...Siver is not a super prosperous company, even though they are the best in the business, think about the size of the 'newschool skiing streetwear' market, and how much demand there is for this. it is very small. take the market that Siver had nearly entirely to itself, under which it still struggled, and divide it among 5 or 6 other companies, and you get 6 shitty clothing companies who can barely afford to market screen printed t-shirts, instead of anything quality. i can draw a cooler logo than many of these companies, and get it printed on a jerzees t-shirt for half the cost of the same product these other companies sell.

here's the facts (as i see it) on the streetwear company overload:

- Everybody here believes in skiing, and progressing skiing.
- Everybody here (well, a lot of people anyways) want to be a 'part' of the movement, on a bigger scale than just skiing.
- Not everybody can be a pro skier.
- Anybody can make a t-shirt.
- The timing is good for rider based comanies.
- Thus, we now have a million and a half t-shirt companies.
- Most of these companies are well intentioned.
- All of these companies claim to be innovators.
- At this point, none of them are. (except maybe Siver, for being first.)

Ok, those are the facts. Now, I would like to make my point....

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, BE ORIGINAL

If you are starting a clothing company in amidst a sea of clothing companies, you damn well better do something different. To be orignal, please consider ignoring the following trends when designing your clothes:

1. Skating
2. Punk
3. Hip-Hop / Urban
4. Pink
5. Camo
6. Trucker Hats

Clothing companies are supposed to START trends NOT follow them.

I know the timing is right. It's perfect. Everybody wants to start a company NOW. but please. I urge you. Wait until you have come up with something original. You'll do better in the end. All of these copycat companies are going to die. The ones that stand out may survive. Being a 'rider-owned streetwear company' is not a new idea in and of its self. You have to come up with more.

THINK MORE. THINK HARDER. USE YOUR BRAINS PEOPLE.

Want to start a clothing company? Great. You should. But be expressive with it. Help enhance the style of our movement, not dumb it down even further. Give us CHOICE, not more of the same.

SUBLUX is stupid. It's just logos on shirts. Come up with something better.

and now for some advertising advice... please ignore the following advertising trends:

1. Hyping the shit out of your product on NS
2. Standing around looking 'dope' and not skiing.

word to coyote. to the others, companies completely unaffiliated with clothing make promotional t-shirts. they are simply a marketing method. so, nomics, et al. are not clothing companies. they are companies that use popular marketing tools (t-shirts and trucker hats) to spread the word about their innovative products: t-shirts and trucker hats, oh wait, and bandanas. i don't like this whole market because it is a bunch of rhetoric wrapped around a small, uninventive product line. that is, it is a bunch of bullshit.

also nomice is a new company and not that big yet so if you email the guys they will email you back and its not some atoumated crap like all of the big companies out there. plus the guys that work there are sweet, and really trying hard to get nomics up and running

For everbody bitching about Siver's high prices you can only blame yourself and your peers. Why do they set their prices so high? Because people are willing to pay $80 for a sweatshirt. If no one was willing to pay that, Siver would either have to lower prices or go out of business, it is simple economics. If price is a factor, stop bitching and support other lower price products instead.

good for nomics, that they are working hard...thats a good start. i just don't understand why anyone would buy the stuff(not just nomics).
are you buying their product because...
-it is functional...keeps you warm, keeps you cool, is waterproof, has pockets, etc. is designed to meet your needs.
-it is exceptionally fashionable
-it is exceptionally durable
For which of these reasons do you purchase the clothes? Is a jerzees sweatshirt with a sublux logo on it any more durable or functional than a jerzees sweatshirt at k mart? As far as fashion goes, if a logo is the base of your sense of fashion, then you suck. That is a 20$ logo. If you are buying it to 'support the movement', then you are buying a product that could not coerce you by quality or function, but rather by their words, which basically means that you are supporting a company who could not earn support based on the quality of product, which does not encourage the advancement of product quality, but the advancement of mission statement appeal. I would not buy buy a new soda that tasted like shit, wanting to support this 'infant' of a company, hoping that given a chance they can make better soda, I would buy coke, cause it tastes good. whoever makes the sickest product, I will buy...

I'd rather wear a t-shirt that doesn't suck with a skiing-related logo on it than a t-shirt that doesn't suck with a non-skiing related logo.

Still, no way in hell am I paying more than $45 US shipped for a hoodie. If I get it and it's a thin piece of crap, it's going back.

to all of you who say buying t-shirts from a streetwear company isn't going to help the sport you're totally wrong. From who do you think the money to make contests comes from ?? A lot is from clothing companies, and contests are the place where a lot of people see freeskiing for the first time in their life. Also, these companies sponsor a lot of athletes, and if athletes don't get sponsored, they won't get known and freeskiing will just go down. Bottom line, streetwear companies are NOT gay



Freeskiing is a lifestyle, and true skiers are the ones who live this lifestyle, not the ones who follow it.

i didn;t read half of this post, but nomics is dope, JP was sportin some of the stuff this past weekend and the designs are dope
and some of you arte talking about siver, they started out just like all these streetwear companies, with like a couple designs and that's it, now a couple years later, they're making quality shit, and next year are making outerwear(i think)
just give it time, and support what you want, no one forces you to buy the stuff, but i support these companies cause i know it's hard to get this shit started...

props to Poniverus though. They make a good product cause they acctuly make it themselves and it takes skill and time to make thier product. They also have somewhat original designs. But i am deffinately not feelin screened t's with a lack of quality and expensive prices. The excuse 'by my crap so i can make decent stuff in the future doesnt work' no company has succeded doing that.

I stoped buying name brand t-shirts. i was thinking about it a few months ago and decided that it is dumb to pay someone to put their name on your cloths. I sometimes try to make my own t-shirts but really am too lazy so i mostly just wear blank t-shirts now or collared shirts

I dont understand how streetwear wouldnt progress the sport...thats just rediculous sounding.There are so many damn streetwear companies for skate clothing and surf clothing out there, and they damn well promote their sport.

well i am in the prosses of developing a 'clothing company' not because i want to change the face of skiing as we know it or money, is because im artistic and skiing is what i love doing and its the shit. but i am actually making alot of diverse designs and like really cool abstract drawings. I know were you guys are coming from and i agree with some of the points you guys make but im doing it for different reasons and making different shit. Its all good

Siver is dope, Sublux's a waste of money- I agree. Their graphics arent that great, it's pretty much simpified. And I think ski tshirt companies needs to push the graphics to extremes because these skateboard tshirts graphics is hella cool and creative comparing to ski companies' graphics.

im all about the streetwear companies....it gives me something to wear off the hill while stil reppin the sport....nomics is just all around dope and jamin is the man....poniverus is going to start producing some shirts and things (correct me if wrong jeff)....and sanctioned outerwear (along with streetwear gear) is starting to climb its way up....thers nothing wrong with trying something new dude...weather its you or someone else trying to start screenprinting tshirts and selling them out of your car...doing something you havent done before isnt always a bad thing....

siver started out as a street wear company but is now introducing outer wear. i think that most companies should have this goal in mind when starting up. who knows, depending on how well siver does they may make skis in the next few years...just look at other sports and the same trends they follow.

I see where some of you guys are coming from, but for some of those little companies, yeah, a silk screened logo on a t-shirt is pretty weak, but that is all they can afford. Take Sublux or Nomics for example, but they are also sponsoring athletes and helping to promote the sport that way. It may not sound like much, but for the athletes it means quite a bit. Personally, I do not like their designs, but I like the market growth.

But there are some companies are actually making clothing from scratch, like Siver or Jiberish. They actually produce products from designed patterns and creating clothing. Siver had that flight suit they made last year that was dope, and Jiberish has one piece pajamas and velour jumpsuits and crazy shit like that coming out this year. And those companies are helping the sport, supporting their athletes by paying comp fees and travel budgets as well as advertising in the magazines and movies that allow those segments to grow. As long as the money we spend stays in the industry, the market grows, the magazines grow, the film segment grows and more products are available to the consumer. Give it some time, there is definately an audience out there that has been waiting for this.

Radoripper is completley right. It's the start of something, something that can help skiing grow. I meen would you rather support a tiny %100 freeskiing devoted company ownd by some kids who love to ski, or some huge multi million doller company owned by 50 year old guys that probably don't even know what freeskiing is.
