Comps..no poles??

just outta curiosity do judges take off points for not having poles?? and what buot rail jams?  cuz im hitting one next week and i find it easier to grind without them

At shred for the cup last year at app i took one slopestyle run without poles and it was my lowest scoring run.

Depending on whos judging, you might or might not lose points, i probably wouldnt take any chances...

In a recent comp i did it wasn't a problem but it will really depend on the comp maybe ask the judges if they would take points off at the specific comp you're competing in

to be honest unless you happened to have some open minded judges you probably wont win if you don't have poles. But if you really like skiing without poles a lot more then just go for it and see what happens.

i've won a big air comp last year without poles... i've got a bit of a special situation though 'cause where I live we're all friends, so poles or no poles they were judging me as me, if you know what i mean.

Seriously though, if you throw down good tricks and stomp clean without poles and you get a lower mark than if you did have poles the judges should be fired. to me it is the same as if you do a super sick grab in an ariels comp and get docked points. they wouldn't call it progression if you lost points for being different.

Regarding why I started using poles again: Did you feel pressure from the industry, the community or was it just easier to get sponsors, exposure (big video part) and contest results that way?

Well I originally started using poles again because of an incident at Aspen Open in 2007. I was given terrible scores in the contest simply because I wasn't using poles. The judges (who will remain nameless) recorded my scores with huge text next to them stating "NO POLES!!!" I was given lower scores for a landed run than others who had fallen and completely skipped the rest of the course. Ever since then I've just realized how much I enjoy having poles. They making pushing around a lot easier, and they're fun to use for front flips. So yeah, I'm just into them for now, who knows what it'll be like in the future.

Just use super short ones. Feels like not having them but judges wont dock points.

if a judge takes points away for not using poles they shouldnt be judging. they belong at some figure skating comp, giving higher scores to the less progressive people.
its called FREEskiing for a reason, if you get punished for having no poles especially when your run is better than people beating you, then thats fucked up and its not a freeskiing comp.

if anything this would persuade me more to not use poles in a comp, and if they say they will take points off, bitch them out.

the more crap like this happens the more i want to never pick up a pair of poles again. its been almost 3 years of never using poles, even on pow days, the closest i got was using poles on a little backcountry trip to skin around. then when i was taking a run id put them away, and get them back out when i had to skin back up.

What a bunch of douchebaggery!  Tom should totally out the little bitches who scored him down for no poles.  That is like scoring someone down because you don't like the tint of his goggles. 

This is a stylistic, not substantive, issue and furthermore has nothing at all to do with how the run was executed.  They are asshats, one and all.

ski industry wants to keep poles around, its one more thing they sell, its one more thing people think they need.

designer poles for 100 bucks? its a metal shaft with a point, a basket, and a handle.

just saying... even tho i still ride with poles most the time

If it is a rail jam there should be no problems. But if it is a slopestyle, i'd say suck it up and use them. You just wouldnt want to take the risk i think.

seriously - if a judge scores someone lower simply because they don't have poles they should not be judging. period.

hmm i always thought that skis is what made us skiers? shit i dont know what the hell ive been doing the past 3 years then!
but really its FREEstyle skiing, if you like the awesome narrow minded no progression, overly serious sports, try ski racing.
if poles dont make you a skier then im proud to say im not part of that narrow minded group of prissy bitches.

and i think skiing without poles looks much steezier, its alot more natural and flowy, poles flying all over the place just looks like crap to me.

style is obviously an opinion, if you want to be judged on how little progression you can do and how standard your form and tricks are, go to aerials. in freestyle skiing, new shit should always get more points.

It's so much sweeter when you have gnared up poles from shredding so hard. Nothing steezier then bent up and scratched poles. I got a new pair of poles for christmas and fell on one of them today adding a big ass dent to it.

guys you know grabs, rails, etc is easier without poles...i cant do double grabs unless im pole-less so it makes sense the judges would take off points...it is easier to ride freestyle without them...

i agree that no poles in more progressive and way sick AND that it is harder to plainly ski without them for balance purposes BUT in the park it is a big advantage...so comps should be stated prior to beginning if this comp is with or without poles...

Anyway, back to the OG Q, ask the judges before the comp starts how they would judge poles or no poles....
