Alright man, let me put my 2 cents in there while giving this a bump.
It seems like you already have a D60 with probably a kit lense and some other stuff. If i was personally you, I would not want another nikon for the reasons you listed (more FPS and Picture controls) and for other reasons. In order to get more FPS out of a nikon you need big $$$$. A d90 is aweomse, it is my new backup camera. It has the same Sensor as the D300, just the d300 has the picture controls of the D2x. I love my nikons, but good lenses are expensive.
Now if i was YOU personally i would do one of two things, it sounds like your taking pictures of skiing. So it would be nicer to have a new body, and i would recomend the Canon 40 or 50D. They are FAST for the money, 6.5 FPS And they are weatherproof. Meaning all buttons and openings are sealed so you dont have to worry "as much" about the little bit of snow hitting your camera. Canon lenses are slightly cheaper, and if your taking fast FPS in bright white light you DO NOT need an Image stabilized lens. You will gain nothing out of it.
The other thing you could do is keep your D60, buy a fast f2.8 telephoto lens and you will see 1000% improvement in your pictures. The lens is much much more important than the body. Because even with a nice Nikon d300 or Canon 50D at 6.5 FPS your pics will be blurry anyways due to chokin the lens down a lot.
Thats just my two cents.
Good luck dude
