alcohol is a drug.  it becomes legal at 21 yet people sill abuse it and fuck themselves up and other people up.  legality does not solve the problem

if meth/H/yayo were legal, a lot more people would try it for the first time... which can lead to addiction which does affect people around the addict. I agree that people should be allowed to do whatever they like as long as they are only harming themselves, but this is not the case when it comes to highly addictive drugs. If it were legal and more people experimented, a higher percentage of the population would become addicted and through addiction often comes stealing, armed burglary etc which does affect other people. The world would be crazy if these drugs (sans mary j) were all legal and open to buy for the public. And it would be way easier to get ahold of these drugs if they were legal otc products. It is much harder to find a dealer, who are often shady as fuck and take forever getting something to someone. In some theries it may work, but in practive I don't believe it would IMHO.

I'm going to preface this by stating the obvious; this thread failed fast and it's probably too late to make any worthwhile contribution to it, regardless of this i'll give my two cents.

The first reason why drugs ought to remain illegal that jumped to my mind was the idea that the use of drugs typically strips the user of any sort of autonomy.  The last thing anyone wants is a bunch of fucked-up people running around with no sort of responsibility. In legalizing any/all drugs you pretty much say i don't care what you do at all and who it effects; your freedom to harm yourself and others trumps the concept of public safety and personal responsibility. Keeping drugs illegal (specific drugs) is pretty much the public's way of saying i do not support the risk involved with particular drugA use, and if you use it, i want to be able to hold you accountable for your actions.

The second reason that i thought of was the idea of imbalance of power that gets created through drugs. Lets suppose for a moment that meth is legalized, we'll take it to the extreme libertarian society and say that there actually is a meth inc. that is producing advertisements for people to try their product -- meth.
but first lets recognize a few things
A.  drugs are typically addictive
B. drugs have a high profit :cost ratio; (those who sell drugs can make a lot of money with relativly small investment in product)

Back to meth inc. You've got a company now that's selling a rediculously dangerous drug, that once used produces a user who is almost guarenteed to be a customer for life, the user will put his/her addiction ahead of anything else of value in their life, and now you've got one company who is recieving anything of value from their customers. The end result will be compition to be the only meth inc. -- which even with the smallest imagination creates a situation no one wants witness. At the least try and think of the add campagin that'd result. Just look at the tobacco industry as an example of how fucked up comercialized drugs can become; food for thought if tobacco use continues as the trend today it'll kill 1 billion people in 21'st century .



i've got more ideas, but i'll start with those two

yeah you can't legalize drugs that lead to chemical addiction. it makes the politicians look bad because your putting some citizens in danger. how would legalizing something like meth or heroin be protecting citizens when they are highly addictive, wreak havoc on your health, and really have no beneficial value besides being an anesthetic. it's just pointless to go through the trouble and writing to legalize something that has no benefit to anyone really. what would i do? keep the illegal depressents and stimulants illegal, we have alcohol, caffeine, and prescription adderall and ADD drugs which are similar to meth already. legalize the psychedelics because they actually have some value compared to the rest. most of them are not harmful to the human body, some are impossible to overdose, some are theuropeutic. psychedelics can even make people stop taking drugs or being violent. i remember watching the history of LSD on the history channel and  they did in experiment in the US where they gave prison mates LSD and the amount of returning ex-prisoners decreased by 50%.

theres clearly some beneficial effect that psychedelics have on people.

do you have any idea how much it costs to run a prison? People are starting private prisons and making BILLIONS out of your money on incarceration of mostly black and hispanic people. this is the most ridiculous response yet

yea, i do. But you see..that part of my response was completely hypothetical, it was just a random idea i thought of while typing.

and i'd say mine was far from the most ridiculous. Your response to mine is even worse. Mostly blacks/hispanics? Bit stereotypical and a tad bit racist, don't you think? You're the one out there trying to make all drugs legal, but then you say my completely hypothetical and random idea to help addicts is ridiculous?

Well, here's an idea for you. I'm not a believer, so i think you should be the frontrunner for this idea. But be the demonstration. Take every single drug you can find, but do it simulatenously and then show us how in control you are, and how wonderful it is.

I agree that we should legalize them all, and let the morons who use the hard drugs die off.

depends on where you live. there's a pretty big prison right near my town, and it's mostly white inmates. We took a field trip there years ago when i was in middle school. Probably the coolest/sketchiest place to bring a bunch of 13 year olds

most drugs change your psyche. along with that you cant stop taking drugs, dont know whats good or bad or how you have to contribute to the society as a whole.

of course, anyone is responsible for himself. but you just cant allow people to do stuff which is destroying the society. and if drugs are spread, more people sit around totally stoned without being able to do anything with their lifes, so its not up to one individualto decide

and this is it. alcohol is not changing your psyche. a few people might get aggressive when drunk, but from what i experienced its not enough to ban it.

i agree. i would like to think that laws are in place to protect me from other people, not to protect me from me. if I do something bad while under the influence of a drug, then I still get prosecuted that incident. if I don't, well, life goes on.

exactly, and notice how all of those are stimulants and depressants? psychedlics do no damage whatsoever to society. they arent addictive because its not really possible to do them everyday. theres no such thing as an LSD addict because no one even has the will power to trip every single day.

Oxycontin is legal, and its killed more people that I know than any illegal drug. The legality of any particular substance is meaningless. That is the point. If you think that the status of the law means jack shit you are kidding yourself. The argument is that there are better ways of treating addicts than prison, not that addicts should be allowed to run free and ruin the world for the rest of us. Drug addiction is a fact of life, and everyone wants it to go away, but like every problem there are many ideas to solve it, and none of them work.

It really pisses me off that stoners try to trivialize addiction as if every drug is as easy to manage as weed. The entire fucking reason pot should be legal is because meth heroine coke and x shouldn't be you fucking idiots. grow up and learn how the world works.
