Owner of restaurant where coyote carcasses found tracked down

EDMONTON (CBC) - Investigators have found the man who ran a restaurant where three frozen coyote carcasses were found, but aren't saying whether charges will be laid.
On Nov. 5, health officials were called to the Panda Garden, when the three skinned carcasses were found in a walk-in freezer. It wasn't initially known whether the animals were dogs or coyotes.

There was speculation that the animals may have been served as delicacies and inspectors are looking into the possibility that uninspected meat was served at the restaurant.

There is no law against selling and serving canine meat, including dogs, but it must be killed and gutted in front of federal inspectors. The maximum fine for selling uninspected meat is $2,000.

Ed Greenberg, spokesman for Capital Health, says investigators have questioned the man who actively ran the popular Kingsway Avenue dim sum restaurant.

'This investigation is following the normal process of any major review that takes place and it's a process that the lead investigator is following, and once he's come to a conclusion, after doing due diligence to the matter, at that time it will be determined whether charges will be laid or not,' Greenberg said.
