Which photo do you think is better?

Whad up bros.  Been awhile sense ive been on.  We have been getting hammered here on the west coast for like a week and a half strait.  We have been jibbing in my back yard with a small rail, box, jump and a few other little set ups.  My buddy and I are putting together a portfolio of pics this winter.  He just boughtt a hella nice camera, I think its a canon 40d he said it was like a grand.  So I come to NS to ask which photo is better, which one should I put in. 

I did a back 1 off a little bump, and bonked a small box, and did the same on a wheel barrel (spelling) On the wheel barrel I easily ollied over 3 feet just to get my nose to bonk the tire. I think I like the wheel barrel one better.

My friend is just getting started in photography, he took some classes last year and is in a pretty good photo club.  He made 50 bucks this week, (first week he got his camera)  so Im trying to support him too.  His name is in the bottom right of each pic.

Wheel barrow is cooler action, for sure the best one.
But- it's soft, and your homie needs to get and learn how to use a flash. That would improve photos like these a ton.

I'm a fan of the second one, you look a lot more relaxed and the curve of the board looks sick personally. You should try to get some different backgrounds or some lighting on it at night, maybe get the feature a little higher off the ground.

it has potential.

the wheel barrow is very cool and differnt but i like the flex on the board like someone else said, if there was a pic of the board right on the wheel it would be the best of both worlds...

The backside of a rider rarely makes for a great shot, make sure to always try to get the front not backsides of ski/snowboarders..the 2nd would have looked sick if it had been taken from the start of the box so you would get the front of the snowboarder

2nd is undeniably better. The jib is more solid, the flex of the board emphasizes what is going on, whether the onlooker is familiar with snowboarding or not.

Composition is better. More rider and less empty snow.

White balance is too blue on both, focus is soft, and needs some flash to get shutter speeds up.

Don't get me wrong though. They are good pics. Those things are the difference between charging $10 a print and $20-$30 though.

Alright, well Ill keep them both, but only put the second one in the portfolio.  So to get rid of the softness, he should use more light, and a faster shutter speed your thinking, and get the front side of the rider.
Thanks guys, as sick pictures pop up, Ill post them for your opinions.

wheelbarrow is unique, but not as good.

in the 2nd pic you are alot more composed and it looks better.

if you can do what you did on 2nd on the wheelbarrow, then you got a nice pic.

using a flash and also finding better/more creative angles would make these shots so much better.  they have a real snap-shot feel to them.  learn from examples in the magazines, most shots are rarely just straight on like that--tell your friend to make use of lines and to really incorporate the rule of thirds.  a different angle/viewpoint will make these shots way more interesting.  definitely work on the white balance too.  definitely not a bad start though
