Alright, i have seen alot of threads asking about starting up a business and ideas for a business and what have you, so i decided i would make a thread to help all of you out.
Owning your own business is a great thing to experience as i have learned over the passed couple of months. When me and my friend first came up with the idea of stance clothing we wanted to make designs that were fresh but not too over the top and brand aware. We kind of rushed into it.
MISTAKE NUMBER 1- rushing into the world of small businesses
You really need to work through everything before you just go, "yup i own a business"
you need to purchase a business license which enables you to sell whatever you want to legally, this can be purchased at your local government building ( such as the court house). Once you have registered your business ( which costs around 60 dollars in Canada and takes 30 minutes to complete) you will have to charge retail sales tax. you will get a sheet in the mail explaining all this following the registration of your business.
once all the legal stuff is worked out ( and im using a clothing company as an example) find a supplier of your goods. if it is a small business you probably aren't making all your shirt/garments in a knitting station through your house. SHOP AROUND! don't go with the first screen printer in the yellow pages. i was lucky enough to have my bosses son as my screenprinter so i can get good deals.
When making your designs it's all up to you, i wouldn't suggest using run of the mill palm tree designs that say california beach, hollister, abercrombie and fitch or anything that stupid. search your brain and think outside the box. For example one of our hoodie designs iss whooping cranes with cctv cameras for their heads and a light post with no lights but more cctv cameras. its really out there. most screenprinters will want their designs in adobe illustrator format.
once you have your designs choose colour schemes. just keep in mind the more colours for your designs the more money it will end up costing you. some good colour combinations are stuff like orange against white or purple against black or powder yellow against blue.
I hope this answers some of your questions, thanks for reading.
