Props to Dew Tour Skiers for showing we've progressed passed snowboarding

I just want to give all the props in the world for all the skiers that threw down in halfpipe and especially slopestyle for seriously upstaging the snowboarders and showing how redundant competition snowboarding is getting.

just watch the top runs from both categories and it's really clear that the snowboarders 1. pretty much ignore putting any effort into the rails 2. total spin to win contest (little to no inverts) 3. the only way to compare snowboard runs it by adding up rotations and counting the seconds held on grabs.

snowboarding for these kind of comps has just gotten so homogenized and everything fucking looks the same. skiing is still young in this major competition world so all the athletes have much more unique style. anyways, i'm done, but can't wait for the rest of the dew tour to unfold, definitely a great start to the major competition season.

im not sure how it went in snowboarding but i really liked to see some pretty fair judging on the skiing side of things showing that the best performance was the one that won and it doesnt take big names to fill up the podium (see Bobby Brown)

umm the dew tour isn't really what you should be judging snowboardings progression by. theres some pretty big name pros but sean white isn't really all that. ya gotta watch the mac dawg movies to really see how far snowboarding has come. im not saying skiing hasn't surpassed them, actually i think us skiiers got the head start and lately its been pretty even.

the the snowboarding slope footage I saw was really disappointing. pretty much all hucked straight up spins. There were a couple dope runs that were exceptions, but I see what you're saying for sure.

I would agree that a nograb trick should not score well at all, but I also dont think unnatural spins should be mandatory, especially if two out of your tricks are pretty much just flips. I guess overall though I didnt see anything that really stood out in Jossi's run, very solid, but bobby really went for the kill~

yeah im not so sure i like the whole unnatural trumps all business now dont get me wrong jossi is my favorite skier right now so im not taking away from him nor the difficulty of the unnatural spins but for some people unnaturals are much easier for them to do than others and i liked that bobby mixed it up, everyone was doing straight spins and corks but he went all out with inverts/flats that i thought were way tougher given the conditions overall its a judged sport so theres always someone unhappy but hey thats how the cookie crumbles just accept what you get and do your best this was hardly an acceptionally unfair judging

i alsso think bobby brown maybe shouldnt have won, i thinnk he should have done something else than his sw double, maybe a sw unnat 9 or something. i think with a run like he did and incorporating everything he needs in a comp, hes gonna kick some ass for sure!!

I dont really think you can say skiers care about rails and snowboarders don't when everyone in the comp basically did some variation of a 450+ disaster on the first flat down.

this definitely isn't news.
watch any of the mainstream competitions on tv like the x games or dew tour for the last few years and you'll see skiers consistently outperforming the snowboarders.

I agree that the skiing was fun to watch, but I don't see how snowboarding is homogenized.  If snowboarders watched the skiing slopestyle many would think the same thing about skiing.  With the exception of a few, snowboarders are way ahead in the style department then skiers.  Just my opinion, props to Bobby Brown on the win.

holy shit PK:

We had Slope finals two days ago for the Dew tour. We've been very unfortunate with the weather during this whole comp, and yesterday was no exception. windy, snowy and very very very cold. I had my camera with me, but it was way to cold for me to take off my glove and take pics.
to sum of the Event:
1. Bobby Brown
2. Jossi Wells
3. Henrik Harlaut
4. Me

Now im going to say what I think about that. And it's important that you all know that I was not completely happy with my run and I didn't expect to get any better than that. So I just going to say what I mean.
Allright, there's 4 thinks you shouldn't do and should do in a slopestyle run.
You should show that you can spin both ways.
You can't have any NOGRABS.
You can't have any handdrags or backseatlandings.
and you shouldn't revert, reverting isen't the worst thing you can do but it should hurt your score a littlebit.

sooo, since Bobby did 3 out of 4, in my mind Jossi should have won by far. that's my opinion, you can dissagree as much as you want, but im gonna explain how I look at it.

First rail:
Bobby: 450, that's probably the most basic ''hard trick'' you can do on a kinkbox
Jossi: sw 630, Much harder than a 450 on 270 out.
first jump:
Bobby: sw misty 10, very nice
Jossi: cab 10, not completely perfect, but it's a very hard trick.
Second jump:
Bobby: sw double knee grab, on www.jon-olsson.com can you see that he's not even trying to grab at all. He's clearly just hucking a dub.
Jossi: sw 10 japan, a nice sw 10 japan.
Third jump:
Bobby: Kangerooooo, very nice.
Jossi: sw 9, very nice.
Last Rail:
Bobby: misty 5 out.
Jossi: 630 out.

I thought we had come to a point in skiing that we had to have an unnatural spin in a run, and I definitely thought that No grabs were completely unacceptable.
In my eyes it is unaccepteable. You shouldn't even be near the podium with a run without a unnatural spin and a nograb trick.

Jossi should have won



call out fo sho. i guess i agree with some but i dunno, low of him to say that or no? what do you guys think? kind of similar to jons situation during KOS?

^ very opinionated that PK is. I dunno while bobby's top rail trick was one of the more unimpressive tricks of the slopestyle his run was so different and certainly had the wow factor that got people on their feet saying "What the shit!". It was super sick, props to Bobby and Jossi for being able to throw down in such shitty conditions, I'm definitely hoping for better weather at Mount Snow.

pk needs to suck it up, jossi is way overrated and has shit style imo. Bobby threw down, and he deserved the win. Jossi's run of cab 10, sw 10 and sw 9 is fucking boring, Its the stock comp run, mix it up some for christs sake.

Bobby fully deserved that win. According to PK's rules we should be doing the exact same boring shit as the snowboarders. Enough of the sw 10 contests already! I'm all for grabs in everything, but I'll give a bit of leeway when I see the first slope run that includes 2 huge doubles. The scores were close, but Bobby brought the WOW. And the skiers definitely showed up the snowboarders in every way possible at Breck. The only people who disagree with that are probably the same ones who think George Bush is a great president.

The problem is, judging is not consistent. Most of the time PK is right, you wont win a comp with no grabs and lack of unnatural. Then when someone does win with no grabs and no unnatural all the other guys feel shafted.

Yes, skiers have progressed past snowboarding in competitions because skiers tend to huck themselves off anything and everything. 

Movie wise though and progression skiing has so many years to go if it doesnt want to become the huck fest that it is.  


Actually scratch that other than bobby everyone was pretty god dman steezy and kept spinning to a real minimum.

What an ignorant statement, you really think Jossi was that much more steezy just because he didnt spin past 10? Yeah 10s are all about style anyways. Its a comp, not the hunting yeti chill festival. The focus is doing to most technical tricks without losing too much style.  Comp skiing wouldnt progress anywhere if all skiiers through were 7s with different grab variations~

that sucks that PK is talkin shit. I mean, he wins shit all the time or podiums, he's been on fire this year, why's he gotta call out bobby like that? I mean, he's just a young kid from CO that goes HUGE and does crazy tricks, doesn't talk a lot of shit, doesnt bang everything like crazy.

same as that Jon shit at KOS: word up, people should spin both ways, word up, people need to grab, but hey man you are a GIANT pro skier! just keep that shit to yourself! nod your head, smile, give props to the unknown that killed it real hard and blew some peoples minds, and keep on doin your thing.


and to be fair, its not like bobby's sw double was really hucked and small, it was fucking MASSIVE and everyone thought he was gonna die it was so deep.

I haven't seen everyones run yet full through so I cant really comment on the skiers runs, but I'm really stoked to see new and upncomers taking the podium.

Now onto whether or not skiing has passed snowboarding.

Watching the latest stepchild/mackdawg videos.  I have seen so much progression and style go into snowboarding.   While I do think that skiing has progressed so much farther than snowboarding in big air/halfpipe, jibs and rails not so much.  Skiing ends up looking all the same, lots of unnatural spin, changups.  I mean everyone was throwing sw 6's onto the box or regular 6's.  It all starts looking the same.

Just my opinion.  I still love jibbing with ski's, I just think that snowboarding jibs and rails look alot sicker than skiing.

What a load of shit, the whole point of this sport developing was to get away from that kind of "required elements" thinking that so many other parts of skiing have.

You should be able to do whatever the hell you want, and if it is sicker than what everyone else does, then you win.

Yeah switch 10s both ways is cool and impressive, but it has also been happening in slopestyle comps for years now, didn't Pete O do right and left switch 10s in his US Open run like 6 years ago?

The reason people started grabbing, and spinning both ways wasn't to make it a "mandatory element", it was to push the sport and do something different. Bobby pushed things and did something different, and totally deserves the win. Sure he didn't spin right and left, so what, Jossi only spun upright.

I was watching all the snowboarders runs expecting to see some sick double flips or something, and was completely dissapointed. Shaun's run(i know he isnt the best, hes justn a very good example) consisted of something like 2 1080s and a 900. I think i saw one misty the whole time.

i mean i could see why hes pissed, he didnt even prequalify and he won superunknown..watch JO's blog and he doesn't look to happy at all to be there filling out forms to qualify...but really, bobby deserved the win. In my book, flips will alwas be riskier/better looking than spins, and the fact that bobby threw 3 in one run is quite an ancheivement, correct me if im wrong but i dont think anyone else threw more than 2. Sure jossi threw down, hes a dope skiier, but his run was kind of stock (like white's halfpipe run...who also lost) but i honestly dont think he deserved to win. And from the dew tour's perspective, flips win. think about when your on a chairlift over the park and someone hucks a backflip or rodeo, everyone oohs aahs and everything, but when someone just throws a corked 5, theyre just like why didnt he keep flipping( ive had someone ask me this...)  Ultimately, theyre in it for the media attention, and what better way to do it than to reward people for hucking flips and being able to say, look at this guy, he won with lots of flips.

so congrats bobby, you deserved it. and to everyone who is gonna tell me to get bobbys dick out of my mouth, i had never even heard of him until the dew tour, i just think he deserved the win

In my opinion, Bobby Brown got screwed in judging on his first run and should have been in 2nd at that point.  He decided that in order to get noticed, he had to do something huge.  He threw everything he could into that run and honestly deserved to win in my opinion.   I honestly said, after watching Bobby's run, if that does not put him in 1st place, I am never watching the Dew Tour again.  I am glad that he won, and he definitely deserved it.

I do have to agree with PK a little bit though.  You SHOULD have an unnatural spin in your slopestyle run, you SHOULD grab everything, you SHOULD not drag any hands, you SHOULD not revert, however, there are ALWAYS exceptions to every rule in freeskiing which is what separates us from Arials, Moguls, and Gymnastics.  

Almost everyone was having trouble clearing jumps, almost everyone was having trouble grabbing every spin, almost everyone was having trouble getting doubles.  On a perfect day, with perfect conditions, and everyone riding perfectly Bobby's run would not have won.  But on a day that very few people were going huge on the jumps.  On a day that very few people were putting down a clean run.  On a day that very few people were throwing doubles, the very fact that 1 person was able to clear every jump by a long shot.  That the same person was able to do 2 double flips.  That 1 person was able to flip off of a rail.  That the same person was able to do all of this in the worst conditions for a slopestyle, when hardly anything was sticking anything to their feet (Not even PK put his double cork down perfectly), Bobby Brown was able to do it all. 

Freeskiing is not always about following rules, and everyone says that Bobby should not win because he didn't "follow the rules" should remember that.

The way I see it is it was super close and could have gone either way and on this day Bobby got the nod from the judges... maybe it was the wow factor... i dont know. All I can say is that neither jossi nor bobbys run was perfect but both threw down and I'm stoked for Bobby... its sick to see new faces on the podium pushing the guys on top and getting some competition going. With every result some people arn't gonna be stoked but thats wat happens in a judged sport...

first off PK is just voicing his opinion of how he saw it. He has a website that he blogs on and if he didnt voice his opinion it would be pretty damn boring. It could have gone either way but in my opinion I agree with the judges. I like that a run that wasnt all spins was the winning run and a run like has quite the wow factor. The only thing I didnt like about bobby's run was the no grab on the switch double but other than that his run was baller and he deserved to win. Hopefully this will make riders do more than just left and right spins in their runs and have a little more diversity to runs.

its slopestyle dude, grabbing and spinning both ways should be mandatory. if you cant fucking grab your trick, dont do it.

bobbys switch misty 10 looked better than both of his other tricks. He definilty won beause of the "wow" factor, spinning and flipping to win.

Nothing should be "mandatory". It goes against the entire core of this side of the sport.

Tanners no grab alley-oop flat 5 shifty in the pipe looks way better than some peoples grabs, so who are you to say "don't do that"?

And if someone wants to spin on a few different axis-es instead of doing the same axis in different directions, then fucking A they should do that.

If you want to set mandatory criteria for what skiers should do in the air, go do FIS Aerials buddy.

i think theres a big difference between those two. a big NOTICABLE diference. bobby didnt grab because he was probably just pushing to get the second flip around. tanner didnt grab his flat 5 because he was busy making his shifty pimp as fuck.
