There doesn't need to be a goal, people don't need to over analyze everything.  It gets really old and causes nothing but problems (mostly).  Just live your fucking life, ski, work, do whatever else you need to do.  there is no higher power or anything, just live, then die, and whatever is in between should be sick.  And even if we did have a goal, who decides what it is?  What if I don't give a shit about that goal and do my own thing?  Or what if I think it's a stupid goal and just go and try to fuck it up because it's not the goal I wanted?  Everyone can have their own goal.  Having a goal for our species is just plain stupid.  Hell, creating a goal for 10 people and having them follow it is hard enough as it is.  It would just be dumb for our species as a whole.  People are all so different anyway, why do we need some universal goal bullshit???  We don't!

our species doesnt need a goal or anything to achieve. no matter how much or how little we try to reach this "goal" doesnt really matter, things are going to continue in a direction that nature has been going in since it began.  everything gets more complex over time. things evolve and change to more complex forms. no matter what our species does it will still be part of the same recurring cycles that have been apparant in nature for its entire existence.

i dont really understand the whole idea behind this... how far do you take it? i like the idea that we are all individuals and we have individual dreams and goals. just my two cents. i guess what im saying is i dont really see how you can get our whole species to work towards a common goal, we're all different.

Nope, life is absurd. There is absolutley no purpose and no reason we are here.  All life actually.  The whole damn universe was a fluke that happened over an infinite amount of time.  Anything that was "supposed" to have happened had an infinate possibility of already happening.  So sorry you are too late.

that's individuals trying not to die out, not a species. a goal like that would rely on fascist-like principles: whatever is best for the human race. that means a LOT of very different ideals would be needed compared to what we have now.

good topic for a thread.

here is my opinion on the subject.

In a perfect world it would be nice to have a goal for our species. what would it be? thats the question isn't it. When you really think about it..... there is no logical answer. one could argue, like myself, that the sole purpose of life on this planet is to find a sole mate that you can spend the rest of your life with and procreate, giving life for centuries after centuries like we have been doing (and we have been doing a dam good job at that).

Technology will be the death of us thats for sure. The human body was never meant to sustain life after a certain age, which will change for almost every individual. like some kid said already, we are not meant to live off drugs, medicine, and technological advances. what surprises me more is that nobody talks about what is important in this world; LIFE. We are born into this world through procreation. we live our life, on whatever path we choose to follow and we die. why is death such a touchy subject. I am not talking about life after death, heaven, or reincarnation, believe what you want to believe. The question im stating is why do we feel the urge to keep those closes to us alive when life itself is trying to leave them?

Now i love my grandparents and i have seen my grandpa die a few years ago. Yes it is hard to let love ones go but you go through the greiving (sp?) process and life goes on. no matter if you are rich, poor, happy, sad whatever, death always comes. funerals should be a huge party to celebrate the ones that have passed, i know i drank a coors for my grandpa at his grave cite. every human on this planet deserves respect and acknowledgment.

in all seriousness tho, i agree with most of your post other than the technology/medicine part.

i think it's safe tp say that medicin has done society in general a fair bit of good. saved livesw and given people a better quality of life. several hundred years ago the life expectancy was what, like 40? even in afghansitan(sp?) i beleive the average life expectancy is liek 45ish, and it;s safe to say they dont have near the same health care or even the means to take care of their elderly unlike our nice little country.

I kinda mean like what we, as in humanity, should strive for. We can survive just fine, but as a being that has the means to do so, how should we choose to live and what should be the end goal for this place?

Should we grow as big as we can? I dont see much point in this really. Kids might be nice someday, but I feel crowded. Overpopulation is destroying our planet, and its worse with every new birth.

Another goal could be for us to try to preserve this earth as much as we can. Noble, sure, difficult, definitely. I'd even go so far as to contain our populations as much as possible, making highly dense and efficient living centers. Its one eventual possibility.

Or consider the separation of our intelligence from our bodies, eg, we become machines. Machines are much easier to fix, and you dont have that problem of mortality. Some things are lost, but others are gained.

A better question may be, if you could travel 5000 years into the future, what would you like to see humanity doing?

ya I had to write an essay about this for school to.

To sum it up in like 2 sentences, I said yes, their goal is perfection. but they will never reach that goal. example


Zebra developed white stripes to confuse its predators and stuff. In tern lions and stuff got stronger and faster so they could catch the Zebra's. THey are always developing, but then everything else develops also to catch up with it.

I disagree because you are taking an example from evolution, and that is not similar to what we are discussing.

Evolution is something out of (for the most part) our control. Defining and setting a goal for our species is not something we can not control. We could if we wanted to. There is nothing developing so fast that we could not identify it and readjust our thinking. Thus, we've kinda evolved out of evolution. Scary?

our species should not have a goal, why, because we already control the earth.  do any other species have a goal other than to divide and conquer, and survive? think about it, we've done all that a species can do before it gets killed out. and thats only a little big longer from now.

I didn't really read anyone's comments but the goal of any species is reproduction. Think about it...the one thing that all human beings do consistently, since the beginning of our existence: eat and reproduce. It's a constant cycle of bangin' and eatin'.

Some thinkers like Aquinas would say that this is all because of the natural order which God put in place, and we are designed to follow these laws, while others would say that we are simply a result of natural selection and evolution. Existentialists think that our life doesn't even have a purpose, and we define ourselves through our actions...

this argument has endless possibilities...

From what I see, all of the goals listed would be great in a perfect world. Reproduction, survival, conservation and all that are ideals that are obviously good to strive for.

My problem with talking about this, though, is how impractical it would be to even have a goal for our whole species. Society is so fragmented now that it is difficult even to find a majority to elect an official or pass a law, much less institute one goal for everyone to follow. For every environmentalist, for example, it seems like there will always be a fundamentalist Christian who thinks the apocalypse is coming and wants to use all of our resources now. Maybe an extreme example, but I think it would be hard, in any case, to implement any sort of goal with the backing of all of (or even most of) society because so many opposition viewpoints exist.

Ideally, if it was truly necessary, everyone could band together and make a goal reality. I think it would take a lot, though. Individuals can have goals, and even groups, but for all of society to work for one unified goal I think would be difficult. Maybe a bit of a tangent, but oh well...
