So i received my statement from Key Bank the other day, and on it, I had a 6.00 "Chargeback Fee"-- ordinarilly, I would just mumble some cuss words under my breath, and then do nothing about it, even though I have no idea what the charge is all about-- because, most of the time, the charges aren't in amounts large enough to be worth your time to settle out.
However, due to the large number of random fees I've been occurring lately, and my overwhelming large amount of free time at work due to the snow storsm, I decided I wasn't going to let this one go.
So I call Key Bank and ask them what the charge is for, they tell me, that it's a fee that I get charged, when a check that is written out to me, that I try to cash, ends up bouncing. So apprently if someone's check bounces, the person who wrote the check gets fined, and so does the person trying to cash it. So then I asked what check it was that had bounced. They told me it was a check from Capital One for $14.11.
The backstory on this, is that I had a credit card at capital one, my balance was like 185.89 or something, and I paid 500.00, so then I had a credit on my credit card, if that makes sense, of $14.11. So then when I closed the account, Capital One sent me a check for what they owed me, $14.11, and when I tried to cash it, it bounced!
I then contacted Capital One, who basically didn't understand the situation at all because their phone personnel are inept. Esentially they told me they had no record of ever sending me a check, or that the check had ever been cashed or denied.
So I called Key Bank and told them what Capital One told me, and they told me the bounced check had been sent back to Capital One. So I called Capital One again, who told me they never received the check and that I was SOL, and that I'll need to somehow get a copy of this check.
This pisses me off so much. It's not the money, it's a small amount of money, it's the principal. Capital One would take me to the cleaners if a check I had written them bounced. I'd receive a 29.00 return check fee, and a 29.00 late fee.
Cliff Notes: Capital Ones check bounces, and I get screwed.
