Short Ski are the future . . . ?

I think so.  I mean yea long skis are great at speed and on groomers but a park ski doesn't necessarily need to excel at that.  Fastest youll ever bee going is into a park jump and that isn't even that fast.  Short skis would be lighter, better swing weight, and be easier for tech tricks like 270's on and switch ups.  Check out these skis on wallisch

couldnt be more than 165 cm and centre mounted.  look like a snowboard cut in half. So sick.

 Also ns's favourite pirate Cedric Tremblay Fournier (apologies if name is spelt wrong) definately uses short skis his edits prove it time and time again and his tricks are very snowboard oriented and progressive.  Nosepresses and tail presses to spinning out all in his repetoire.

I mean if freeskiing ever wants to have a future i hate to say it but it must move away from its mogul/ariels roots and move towards proper board sports.   lose the poles, ditch the long lengths, and were essentially snowboarders facing forwards. 

Is this the future you see for freeskiing?  Express your thoughts.

No. One, you are basing your conclusion on one skier, tom, who is blatantly joking in that picture. Two, short skis have worse swing weight. Three, short skis look stupid as fuck. go long pussies.

I did read it and you don't even need to. You're basing your point on a joke. Why the hell would a competition skier use smaller skis? He would look worse to judges and probably would have a hard time getting speed for jumps.

don't people buy their skis to fit their height? i don't know thats just me i'm 6'2 usually i rock a 176 - 181 any where in that range...i could never go short i would feel unstable.......lol do you know how funny guys 5'11+ would look on short skis...it wouldn't fit right...meh i don't see a change coming at all.

The skis Tom is on there are 169's.  That's not too tiny especially for a rail ski.  And center mounted is the key as far as swing weight.  length doesn't have shit to do with it really.  Sure they'll weigh less, but the swing weight for any center mounted ski will be the same technically.  That's the point of center mounting is to make the swing weight even. 

And I think Ced probably uses 170's in a lot of his edits.  Not really that small.  He's a smaller guy.

those skis are at least 175, considering toms 5'9 thats not too short, thats what an average park skier would use starting out if he/she was that height. could tom use longer...yes...does he have to no. PERSONAL PREFERANCE...like poles

uhm, his skis are centermounted, so they are longer than they look. i have 181's and they look short when you see the front because they are center mounted. and i think the future of skiing is doing/skiing/dressing however you like. if you dont want poles, dont use them, if you like skinny/ fitting pants, wear it, if you like short skis, use them.  I by the stuff that i like, not what everyone else likes. im not going to change my ways just to fit in the crowd. last year i wore small pants because i am cheap and wanted to get another year out of them. i didnt care. and no one else did. but now i have large pants. i could care less what everyone else does.

Ced skis a 176 or 180. He's 5'7'' or so, 155 lb and moustachioed. He gave me a stern talking when I talked about buying a pair of park skis under 170.

short skis are not the future and never will be. short skis just look so gay man. it just looks so gross and sloppy, long skis are so much smoother it just strait up looks better. also i find it harder to control yourself on rails with shorter skis and there whack on jumps. i personaly being about 511 would never go under 180s

For the record those are 169 townships, tom used them in norway for urban.


Ced rode 171s last season and 181s from the spring on... that sounds about right.

im gonna disrespectfully disagree. ZERO pro skiers use jump or pipe sksis under 180's/ they have better swing weight, and you say that you arent giong fast on a big jump line? thats untrue. even short ass little dumont skis on 181s

hahaha, i actually laughed.  seriously, is this how much influence Tom has on skiing?  One picture makes kids think it's cool to have small skis, just because the perception/angle of the photo suggests shorter than average boards?  scarrryyy.

Dumont uses 181s for pipe, 176 for slope.

pretty much the whole volkl team uses 177.

the line and amplid team 178s. (or 176 townships)

most k2 riders are on 179s.

not a whole lot of pros are on anything bigger than 181.

Short skis will wash out much easier on backseat/off balance landings and such.  If this was really a progressive idea, it would have been done already.  Performance is first in the eyes of a pro, and really short skis won't perform as well (and to top it off they would look stupid as shit and style counts).

I haven't seen people in competitions riding ski blades just because they don't weigh as much.

Anyone who has taken a little physics in college (or maybe even high school) will know that a longer ski is going to have a larger moment of inertia, and thus be harder to spin. You multiply the mass by distance from center, so a center mount will feel easier to spin. Also, a longer ski will feel harder to spin than a shorter ski of simliar mass.

However, because of this, a longer ski will tend to be smoother on spins, and tend to have a better balance because of the larger moment of inertia. So it might to some degree feel easier to spin with a larger ski.

i actually find that longer skis are easier on rails

and i can spin a 270 just as easily with long skis as with short skis, and plus, landing on long skis is a lot easier then landing on a 161 length

sure, but most pro skiers are between like 5'7 - 6', and its pretty normal lenghts for them, just not fuckin too big like people think sometimes.

Dude, actually short skis are the past... I don't know how old you are, but they used to have ski-boarding in the X-Games.  They rode like 150s and shorter.  Then everyone realized you could do the same shit on longer skis better and stylier.  Need more proof short skis are dumb? Ice-lantic.  Nuff said.

ok, first of all, just because tom wallisch is on short skis in that picture does not mean they are the future of skiing. Seeing as he has a broken collarbone, he will not be able to use poles. And seeing as he is not competing, there is really no reason for him to be on skis anyway. more likely than not its a joke. his shorter skis would make it easier to skate on, which is the only way he could get around. Longer skis give you more control, are more stable, and allow you greater versatility. mounting short skis dead center, or a little past center, would make them squirly beyond belief. Im not saying everyone needs skis 180+, just skis that fit.
