Resorts' Adaptation to Freestyle Skiing

That's the title of a research paper that I'm writing for my 11th grade English class. My thesis is 'Terrain parks, special equipment, and freestyle competitions have aided ski resorts in the adaptation to freestyle skiing.' So as i start to do the research for my paper, I notice that every site I come across is like somebody's personal page with shitty information. So if anybody knows where i can get information on shit like what features have been added to ski resorts, such as different rials, jumps, etc. I'd appreciate it. The only thing is that they need to be reliable sources, not personal pages that say 'terrain parks have jumps like table tops, hips, and spines', it would help if the pages included a timeline. Any information at all would help. Thanks.

might I recomend shooting a couple emails off to areas like Big Bear, ask them when/if there were any articles written about the tranformation to a complete park area. Also, shoot off some emails to find out about past press releases from major areas, that should classify as a legitimate resource.
I know you probably cannot use the emails they right back as a source, but the areas themselves can probably point you in the right direction for your sources.

well i work at a small hill in the lower laurentians in quebec, for 6 years we've had a few shitty jumps and a single barrel rail that they cut from an actual railing when they were changing the ones at the ski hill, never anything goes on, we decided to show the hill how much use a park would get, so we built a decent jump and sat there and counted how many times it was hit, showed the results to the owner, and were given basically a buget of 5 grand, told to give an order for metal, and that wed get whatever as long as most of it fournished beginners, so now we have some decent flat rails, a masive downkink a wall ride and 4 very nice jumps, were also planing a little comp for the locals make it like the vans triple crown ( much smaller more like a session with crappy prizes) we also devloped a freeski program last year ( first one in quebec i think ) at least thats what i was told but its probably only cuz its not only moguls we teach rails and shit too. anyways thats my hills progression

Thanks for the idea manus. And i probably would be able to use the e-mails as an interview citation.

The problem with that thesis is that it isn't arguable. A good thesis will be able to be argued against, and yours is a bit obvious. Instead, maybe something along the lines of, 'With the advent of newschool freestyle skiing and ski mountain's embracing new and innovative terrain park features, skiing's image has been much improved'.

that topic is sorta hard to do. That sounds like a lot of work for a high school paper. The teacher probably doesn't even know how to ski. Why not pick an easier topic and save time. Time that can be used to watch ski videos or work so you have extra money for sking stuff.

yeah i tried doing a 20 minute presentation on how skiing went from a way of survival, to a recreational sport, to where it is today. I thought it would be easy because im a skier. shit was I wrong. Its so much harder than you think, it took me a good 15-20 hours to get enough info, media and literature to put together a solid 20 minute presentation. do something simple, even though it may not be from the heart.

Why does it sound like people are discourageing him from doing the paper he wants. Throughout my educational career I only did 2 papers that I somewhat enjoyed doing, and one of them I was traveling 2 hours each way for research. Sometimes a hard paper that means more to you is easier to write, even though it takes a longer time.
I admit I was a shitty student, but having the right topic definately motivated me.
I say go for it, just be ready to put in the extra time.

I haven't read what other people wrote but in my neck of the woods people are pretty progressive. They've encourage me to develop a freeskiing prorgam (now with optional competition) plus they let me design a second park on our hill more suited to people just getting into the sport (all pvc). You need to have skills progress with terrain. They're all been pretty proactive. I think right now my program is the only full freeski program on teh Niagra Escarpment.

lucky you, my local area has been fighting it for a long time, even removed their half-pipe (it was pretty terrible though, but it was better than the flat open crap that's there now). We actually got two little rails last year, which was huge for my area, but I doubt they'll let the area have much more, Patrol would have a shit fit.
