So you have a open car which is good with a sub. I expect you would include that when you mean system.
Starters, get a good deck. One with ipod support is usually bomb, you can control it through the head unit and throw your ipod in the glove box.
I suggest an alpine, thats what I have and its awesome, here's mine: You need an ipod kit but they are not too much $$$$

Next some infinity speakers are good so are Kenwood. The more you drop the better the sound... but look at some reviews price isn't always everything
Next, get a good amp. Something that supplies ample power to your sub if you go to like cartoys they always under power them. not good.
As for a sub, Rockford Fosgate p1's are bomb so are p'2
You can get good deals on cragslist just be careful.
