I had one.
great for parents wanting to capture there children.
I loved the camera for a first DSLR but I had to many things that I didn't like about it to even keep it around as a spare. it's a useless camera if you take photography at all seriously.
Id suggest it if you are on a tight budget as the canon equivalent is a joke.
Go D60.

your an idiot, you say that you didint like many things on the d40 when the d60 isint much of a step up (mega pixels is the only difference really, and 85% of people only need 6) you say the canon equevalint is a joke, but the image quality is indestingushable. besides the body dosent effect image quality as much as lenses.

and the d60.d40/d40x are all shit, they dont have af motors in the body, so you cant use alot of nikons lenses (there good ones any way)
