President-elect Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana.

for those who are unaware. a few days ago obama's team was "open for questions" on their website. people could ask any question they wanted to ask obama and people were given the choice to vote on what questions they wanted to hear obama answer. the #1 rated question was about the legalization of marijuana and the thread title is his response.  frankly, i am upset at this answer as it does not give any reasoning behind it.  hopefully there will be a better answer from him after the next open for questions event is held.  im going to smoke a bowl now just to spite obama. and to get high. oh and im encouraging everybody to participate in the next open for questions. peace.

he mentioned marijuana ONCE maybe twice before his campaign. Not that I'm against marijuana or the legalization of it. I smoke it. It's just people get all hyped up about one little thing that I personally don't think is as important as other things. I'm not calling you out ^^ I'm just saying, he was for it a few years ago so we could tax it and make mad bank. Which I would be down for cause this country needs some money. But It may take a while for marijuana to be legalized with all that's going down already. Be patient, eventually it will happen.

It is still very political right now for him. People still don't trust him. There are so many things that need fixing before he can even focus on mj. This is a second term issue. Federal persecution may go down but legalization is still more that 4 years off if that. Do you understand how crazy the news stations will go if Obama said he would legalize mj? It wil happen state by state and will be removed from being a federal issue.

i heard this consperacy theroy that the govornment will never legalize it because it would make an eighth worth like 5 bucks and that drug dealers make a lot of money and distribute it quickly so its good for the economy or some shit like that i dont know its true but maybe

i didnt expect him to be in favour, come on, he works with the US government. what he should do is stop the DEA's involvement in marijuana, especially the MMJ clubs in Cali. it should be left to the state and local police. personally i think it should be decriminalized across the country (US and canada), and hemp should return as the most cultivated renewable resource in the country.

this is kind of a moot point because people miss the part that the legalization of marijuana would not mean that it could be produced, bought,  and sold by the average citizen. Almost undoubtably they would have things like licenses which would enable a person to grow and sell it. Its not like America would become Amsterdam, where every bar you walk into has a wall with weed on it that you can purchase and smoke.

its the cigarette companies who already have names dibsed for product names. can you say Marlboro Greens? im sure that if it were legalized and they did produce them, there wouldnt be only joints sold but mostly spliffs with the pot/tobacco ratio of your choosing.

i'd say right now thats probably closer to the bottom of his to do list. There's much more important work.

And not that its been happening here, but i love when people complain about the economy/world situation of the US...but then also complain that pot isn't legal.

I think it should be legalized (i don't smoke) but only after everything else has been settled. I'd rather have americans taken out of combat than have a bunch of pot smokers be happy

im not against legalizing marijuana, but it seems like now that obama won, everybody expects him to take care of what they want first. Our economy is in the shitter and were in the middle of a way, obamas got enough to worry about besides marajuana

Decriminalization is retarded, it doesn't solve any of the problems caused by the prohibition. Everyone in the country needs to watch The Union: The Business Behind Getting High. Some of it is stuff people who are interested in legalization already know but a lot of it is eye-opening. I don't care who you are, you CAN'T be in favor of prohibition after watching that movie.

If it's decriminalized it's still sold by criminals, not controlled by the government, which means...
1. It still increases crime and violence because there will always be organized crime looking to make a buck off it. Even low-level crime increases.
2. The government still has to pay money to enforce it and it still has to pay money to try and jail people.
3. If it's sold by criminals it's easy for kids to get it because anyone can sell it.
4. It puts the money into the hands of the black market instead of the government, which could make a killing selling it taxed and funnel that money into something useful.
5. The "gateway effect" is caused by it being illegal. There's nothing about marijuana that encourages people to try harder drugs, most are perfectly content with it, but if their dealer also carries other shit and says to you "Oh, you should try ___" you might do it.
6. It's impossible for buyers to know what's in their product because it's uncontrolled.
7. Keeps the price high because it's still illegal and there's a huge risk involved. Most people pay ~$220/oz, which is outrageous. Wheat costs $200/ton, most other commodities cost about $200/lb. Weed is just that - a weed. It would be way less expensive if it were legal.

Just ask a dealer or commercial grower if they want it to be legalized... should give you an answer.

People still get charged with possession in California, and it still happens often. However, the cops are more likely to let it slide if its a small amount.

You are right though that you will be in much deeper shit if you get caught with it in Nevada or Utah. In those states, a marijuana offense stays on your record forever if you're over 18. In California marijuana offenses disappear off your record after 2 years, which is the only offense that has that.

Decriminalizing it will be beneficial in that it will bring the price even lower. Organized crime will be even less attracted to it because the profits will dry up. If anyone can grow it without worrying about getting screwed over, how many people do you think are going to pay $240 for an ounce?

yeah but there are only 4 states that it is decriminalized in and still the federal government has control. the dispensaries in california, for example, can legally distribute to people with the a green card. except its still a federal offense so the D.E.A. raids them and literally destroys the place.

if it were fully decriminalized then the state would have complete control. thousands of people wouldnt have to go to jail and and that would save plenty of taxpayers dollars. commercial growers would still have their jobs, a large portion of their crop would go to the dispensaries to be sold to people with green cards. also those commercial growers would have the safety of not getting busted resulting in a boom of new strains because they would have the time experiment.

they need to make it so a green card is needed to purchase and you need to be a certain age before you can acquire one. sure there will still be the blackmarket side and people underage who can get their hands on it, but what underage kid cant get their hands on alcohol?

wait what? I think you're misunderstanding the difference between medical marijuana and decriminalized. Its not called a green card, its called a doctor's recommendation.

And I hope you realize that nearly all cannabis dispensaries in California are controlled at least partly by organized crime.
