I am. I was in Blue Sky yesterday when that slide happened. On my first run in Blue Sky right as it opened I was going to hit that exact spot but didn't traverse high enough, lost my speed and couldn't easily make it to that point so I decided on another run. After a sick run through the trees where I scared myself by almost getting runover by my waist deep sluff I got back on the lift, I was thinking I was gonna try to hit Lover's Leap (the area that slid) next, and huck my meat off that cornice. However on the way back up the lift there were a bunch of people standing around in that area and on closer inspection I could see that face had run to the ground.
I am definitely considering wearing my beacon inbounds now. Vail is sketchy as hell right now, all the snow from October is rotted out and gross with lots of snow on top of it, and heavy loading.
This is no bueno!
I had been skiin Baldy all day on sunday. On my last run before lunch I hiked out and took the traverse just pass the location of the slide. It was the deepest run of the year for me and when I got to the tram deck every one was freaking out. It turns out that my ski team had hiked Baldy just after or possibly just before the slide had happened but we had no idea! One of my coaches went and helped probe but they didn't find Heather for up to 40 minutes. She was life-flighted but ended up passin a little before 5pm I belive.
It just goes to show how powerful the mountains are and you should always be perpared. It isn't a bad idea to always wear a beacon and have the patrols number in your phone in case of an emergancy.
R.I.P. Heather, much love for family and friends
