Replying to Opening day at Shawnee Peak
SO. today was opening day at lil ole' Shawnee Peak. Me and a friend were up at 7 and got there at 8:30 where we waited for a half hour for my pass pic and lifts to start up. The mountain was basically covered and I was expecting a lot of trails. Unfortunetely there was a grand total of 3 trails open... its bad I know but it was because there wasn't a good enough base on a lot of the trails and the night before a thick layer of ice formed over everything so the first few runs of the season were cruddy(pun intended). In the first two hours it wasn't any different then a normal mid season run other then the ice but oh no, today these three trails were packed with everyone. Park rats, gapers, families, people getting lessons, bad kids, good kids, white kids, black kids, tall kids, short kids. I know this sounds terrible but in all truth it was so much fun. Probably because it was my first time skiing this year and I was stoked out of my mind but who knows. They did have a single flat box open that was maintained by one guy all day(7 hours) eventually it was crowded with boarders and the few freeskiers that were there. Some gnarly stuff was thrown down though, and I did some funky stuff that I didnt know I could do. Everyone was giving off good vibes and it was just fun to sesh with friends. I met up with a few other friends later and we mostly sesh'd the box and occasionaly took a run down gaper alley. We ended up staying from opening to closing without getting bored and I'm so glad I went, even if it was only a few trails. I'm probably goin up tommorow too and they were grooming a couple more trails and all the snowguns were goin when we left. So if any NS'ers out there go to shawnee lemme know because im all alone since ALL of my friends board *weep*
