I listen to 5+ hours of rap a day, mainly because i'm almost constantly working on web design (grounded from skiing GAYY) check my site http://myhs.us/

MY FAVORITE RAPPERS (kind of ordered-ish)

B.I.G. - Best rapper ever.

Jay Z - one of the most consistent rappers ever, i have his discography, his freestyles (old ones, when he was jazzy) are good, and his new shit is too

Lil Wayne - Not a "real" gangster, shot HIMSELF when he was 12 (accidently), but i love his songs, his lyrics are crazy!

Kanye West - FUCK his new shit, but his first 3 albums were great (graduation & earlier), and his beats he makes (like heart of the city) are crazy

50 Cent - I used to hate on 50, still hate g-unit, but i love 50s music. His latest album, curtis is gay as aids, but The Massacre was all i listened to when it came out. In My Hood (the massacre) is one of my favorite songs ever. Definitly one of the best G-rappers,

Papoose/Cassidy/Saigon - All great and under-appreciated rappers, Cass is famous for his freestyles, Pap for having almost 500 songs, and saigon is a true G that killed a person at 12.

Big L - Lifestyles ov da Poos and Dangerous is a great album, also look up "7 minute freestyle with jayz", probably the best lyrics ever, also had a the big picture album, but i reccomend the other one

Common - Listen to his Finding Forever album, its great,

This is gonna get me some hate but honestly Jay never did it for me. I mean you can't go wrong with 99 Problems, but everything else I've heard from him has felt pretty lackluster. And I don't hate on mainstream rappers solely because they're mainstream, only if they actually don't have talent. And I'm not saying Jay is talentless, but I don't think he belongs on that list.

Pac: Yeah, he does deserve a spot for sure. That was my bad.
Mobb Deep: Meh.
Common: I've never been a big fan of his stuff, but he definitely has talent. I didn't include him because I just personally don't like him, but he is good shit.
KRS: Another mistake on my part.

And honestly, even though the MCs you listed as legit entries are some of my favorites, and they are time-tested lyrical masterminds, several of the other ones on that list are definitely more gifted... and I think time will put them at the top. Insight is the best MC I've ever heard, besides maybe Del, who is a lyrical God. Qwel, Chali 2na, and Sleep are also at the same level as the guys you mentioned, if not slightly above it.

I also forgot to mention Diverse, the boys from Hilltop Hoods, and the Binary Star duo. Not the best but they deserve spots at the very least.

there is a slight problem with this thread. actually it's a huge problem. i don't think anyone has an extensive enough knowledge of the hip-hop genre of music to assess who the best rappers are. you can certainly tell all of us your favorite rappers and that is essentially what everyone has done, but these lists lack so many people that need to be mentioned. and no, i will not mention them. i have so many times in the past and they just go completely unnoticed, causing me to suspect the majority of people lack the knowledge to be taken too seriously.

One thing I forgot to ask, what type of "best" are you using?

Ex:
By best do we mean our favorites, or the artists who have done the most for the genre, etc...?

Just for the record the BIG thing was more of a joke, I respect him for sure.

Common I am def not into though

And whoever said they don't like Immortal Technique, I can understand that.  His flow is a little slow and at some times even inconsistent.  However, alot of his beats are dope as fuck and he has some seriously good lyrics.  He was the artist that got me back into rap though, there was a couple year period where I was just into the first JMT album and Jurassic 5 and shit but Rev. Vol. 1 got me back into underground hip hop big time when it dropped.

I have to say if I was going to recommend one hip hop album to someone it would probably be the Non Phixion album.  But I think Tech is a little more accesible if your coming from more mainstream stuff.  For me he related to alot of the values that I was still into from my anarcho punk days in highschool.
