i looked around for a long time and compared a lot of cameras and for a range between the nikon d300 and the d80 in price i went for a d200 for my first camera. its fast and takes nice pictures. its a ccd sensor and not as nice as the cmos on the more expensive newer cameras.
but d200 overall nice first camera if its in your price range i picked it up slightly used practically new for about 700 with no lenses.
d80 ive seen go for about 550 slightly used if you are going for a cheaper camera.
and for canon cameras.......ask someone else im a nikon guy i have nothing against canon though

canon ae-1, learn film first, it makes you think about each picture more, thus making you a better photographer,
but if your set on a dslr, then i would go with a nikon d70 or canon rebel series, you dont need a d200

i like digital better, i feel when you are learning photography, you need more room for error and with film, you are much more limited

you can experament with film, but you have to pay more attention too what your doing so in turn you learn faster. also digital makes people ust snap off frames not paying too much attention to what there doing
