What paint to use when painting a ski?

ive searchbarred, yet nothing showed up..

im basically wondering if there is a certain paint to use or just a good waterproof glaze or somthin to layer on top of other paint.

does anybody know what to use
?

just any kind of white spray paint for a base
then color with sharpies
then somekind of waterproof coating

if u r paint the entire ski over, u can use any paint as long as u put like 2 coats of polyurithain (killed that spellling).

yeah you just need to make sure and use a few coats of urethane/clearcoat over the paint job. Also, if it's new skis you're painting you should wait to break them in a bit, because otherwise the paint will crack and flake off after like a day.

 Buy some Krylon Plastic Bonding Primer Spray Paint for the base layer, then on top of that apply a LOT of coats of whatever you're wanting and finish it off with a LOT of coats of clear waterproofing.

I mean ALOT of coats. Skis get pretty brutalized pretty fast you'll find, especially after you've worked so hard to paint them so the more coats you have the longer it will take for the paint to get chipped or scrapped off. Don't take the quick way out of painting your skis, make a day of it and be sure to apply a thin coat, let it dry, then do another.

Apply like 4 really thin coats and dont forget the clearcoat

I used sharpie's and didn't clear coat is, they faded a bit over a season but i simply retraced it yesterday to start the season. I might clear coat it 'cause i'm thinking about doing something more.

I hope that helps your decision

white spray paint in thin layers, use sharpies but keep them moving or it will soak up the paint

It seems krylon is the most commonly used as it bonds to plastic very well.

and im not sure, but they mentioned in that thread that clearcoat fucks with sharpies a ton. Skim thru that thread, it has tons of info anyways.

don't prime it, don't clear coat very much

I had a whole thread that I explained it in but I can't find it anymore because of the new searchbar

Basically, start out cleaning it with some grease cutter and if you have it, denatured alcohol.

sand it to make it a little rough, with like 100 or 120 grit sandpaper. not too rough.

Spray like 5-7 VERY light coats of KRYLON BRAND FLAT WHITE on there,

the last coat should be just enough to cover up the graphics. The idea is that you spray so thin that the paint dries almost instantly upon touching the ski. You don't want wet paint that will set up into layers that will crack and flake off when the ski flexes.

after that, wipe it down with a dry cloth and use sharpies to decorate it.

then, use a VERY LIGHT coat of clear coat to seal the sharpie.
