Stealing other people belongings = bad karma

So my fancy Armada pole got ganked this afternoon at Mt Snow.  Yes, they are just poles. And I bought them of of Steve from MN for $15 so he could have some gas money to drive back home for Oregon.  But I really liked those pole (especially those grips). And its hard for me to find stuff I like.  By posing on this site, I don't really expect to get them back, because people here usually have some deccency and respect.  But who ever has those poles, shal be bestowed with Bad Karma.  They're not going to blow out their ACLs or contract herpes or anything like that.  But they might, break a ski binding, or finger, or their significant other will cheat on them and contract scabies and in turn they will contract it, or other various forms of mild forms of retribution for stealing my poles.

ya my friends got there skis jacked last year. they even tried to mix match them to prevent it but people still jacked them. they both got stuck with only one ski.

i agree that taking stuff from other people is the biggest dick move ever. total bullshit and we shouldn't have to deal with assholes like that. but with riding without a lift ticket, i can understand why so many people don't. most of the people on here who would not buy a lift ticket are kids who are just lapping the park, and paying 80 or 90 bucks for that is ridiculous. i personally buy tickets, but ski resorts make so much money off of overpriced tickets, and i can understand why kids who spend all their hard earned money buying a set up wouldn't wanna spend so much money to hit a park.

dude. there's a huge difference between stealing a persons poles and stealing rental poles.

My buddy andrew has the best way of looking at it, which is: stuff in the store has already been paid for.

seriously though - stealing from the corporate world may be illegal, but wrong? that's up for debate.

alright, i'll start with the money involved... lets look at a table in IKEA for example. A Canadian logger goes out and cuts down a bunch of trees (which yes, he does get paid for - which is about as far as that money train goes), those trees go on a truck and probably get send down to some port city in the States where they cut the wood in their mill, send the trees by boat over to China where the table is made. The table is sent over to Europe where the IKEA distribution center sends it to the IKEA in Richmond, BC where the same logger goes and pays for it (with the money he earned from cutting down the tree).

Wear as, if the tree were to stay in the country, get cut here, made into something here, and sold here, the table wouldn't only be cheaper, but everyone would have more money to pay for it.


Alright, I don't even know if what I just wrote will hold - I even doubt it. but the idea is there.

if you buy stuff from a major corporation all you're doing is making a handful of people at the top of the corporation richer, and letting them know they can keep getting away with the bullshit system they have set up to control the world. We are living in a world where corporations have more power than politicians, and the average man is just a percentage.

all day lift tickets=$53 mid/$61peak   that is for 12 hours of skiing. 10:00-!0:00 or 10:30 depending on the lifties last call.  That is just about 5 dollars an hour.  
People pay $10 to see  a 2 hour movie (i.e. twilight..complete trash) that comes out to 5 dollars an hour.  Factor in gas to the ski resort and you might get 7 dollars an hour for an experience that is infinitely better than watching brad pitt wearing his armani and doing what ever they pay him to do next. 
ski resorts don't make any more of a killing than your local Movico.  I went to Panara Bread with my mom today and we spent $7.50 each.   that sandwhich was gone in 5 bites.  that could have been an hour of skiing.
panara bread is making a killing off of my tastebuds.  lets steal from them too!

ive been in a habbit of losing shit lately.
including:
an 8 gb ipod nano
a 4gb ipod mini
a wallet with $250 in it
a leatherman worth $100
and my tape deck

so far ive found the 4 gig ipod, and thats it.

a story related to yours, today i was skiing with some friends, we went to the racks and dropped our stuff off, and i saw some other kids i know. started talking to them, and as we were walking away, one of them stole my friends poles. he had no idea they were ours, and my friend just walked up, grabbed them out of the kids hand, called him a douchebag and walked away. fucking retards.

i do promote taking rental poles and poaching mountains, but i do not promote stealing shit from people.  Sticking it to the man by poaching is way different than taking something that someone spent money on.

for the thread creator: i've never gotten jacked on the mountain, but i got a ski lock (like $10 maybe) and you can just lock your skis and poles onto it. best buy you will ever make i guarantee it. just pick one up at like rei or something

Yea really, ski keys are worth it. I could lock my skis up and go take a 3 hour nap and feel confident that my skis will be there when i go back out.

And to people that split their skis up, if someone was even thinking about stealing your skis i'm fairly confident he would have no troubles finding your other ski in under 5 minutes.

get serious the only way ski resorts make money is by charging you to rent stuff and having expensive tickets its like any business, how else are they going to sustain all the equipment electricity and man power that it takes to run a ski resort? obviously since everyone wants to pay the least amount of money possible we always complain that everything is too expensive and then we get pissed that theyre "stealing our money" so we reciprocate by stealing their poles or riding without a ticket because they already make too much money and we can show that we're so badass that "the man" doesnt control us
wake up and see the big picture: 1 you wouldnt be skiing if no one built a resort and 2 if you were a resort owner wouldnt it piss you off if a bunch of little shits were stealing your stuff? the resort/mountain owners pay for this stuff so basically youre stealing from them...but thats nothing like just stealing from someone
stealing is stealing and its fuckin stupid and in no way should it make you feel like a hero

i hate people that steal from individuals. i feel for you man. i got my favorite backpack to ski in, with an Under Armour layer, a 4 gig nano and headphones, my brand new shovel, and 40 dollars stolen from me when i set it down in the lodge for 5 minutes. its the lowest thing a person can do to another person.

also once at my local skatepark i put my ipod down in front of me on the picnic table and stood up to light a smoke and this kid who i think is a douche but i dont tell him so, picks it up and puts it in his pocket right infront of me. so i told him he just stole my ipod and he was like oh, and gave it back to me. fucking idiot.

and i hate people who steal from ski resorts. they charge money for shit so they can keep the lifts running! do you want them to run out of money and shut them down? dont poach.

If the cost of the product would be less were it to be produced/distributed/etc. in the same country then IKEA would do just that. Why would they want to pay more? You make no sense... The reason they produce on foreign soil is because it is cheaper to do so.

Whereas I understand the logic in that you're "stickin it to the man" your thought process to justify it is flawed.

It really is bullshit, I feel your pain man. A couple seasons I had my poles stolen outside the lodge too. It sucks cause I had these sweet pole protectors that go right above the baskets to keep em from chipping. I have never been able to find anywhere that sells them again

The difference is taking something from the pocket of a broke kid who is gonna have to work hours to get a new pair of poles vs. taking a bit of profit from the balance sheets of a multi-million dollar corporation. I don't feel bad at all about stealing certain things from certain resorts. Park City, for example, can lick my balls. I will steal from them any chance I get but regardless of whatever petty theft I can manage from them the owner will still won't be struggling to tank up the hummer every morning.

I am very very unhappy with how we (the human race) is going about our business these days (perhaps you've realized this from my opinions on here and in my blog). As it is right now the rich is in control and the poor is getting fucked up the ass. Now, I guess you could argue with me that the rich are the rich because they are the smartest, but I just can't believe that. If that statement were true than the smart poor would have every opportunity to get rich as the ones who were raised in a rich mans environment.

No, the only thing our society is good for is oppression and destruction. The more and more I look into social structures and what would be best I am slowly being leaned towards a brief locally based anarchist system. every region has to close itself off and work together towards sustainable living, and only then can we get back into a global community without all the injustice going on from the rich to the poor.

we are living in an extremely unbalanced society where the powerful and elite are a small percentage of the global population and their only real concern is keeping their power, not freeing africa or dealing with the food shortage crisis going on around the world.

If I put a ski resort out of business because I stole their rental poles then trust me, that ski hill has way, way bigger issues to deal with in upper management because I gotta tell you, ski poles are nothing in the grand scheme of things... and with that point, neither are lift tickets. The percentage of ski resorts in Canada the rely on lift ticket sales are extremely small I'd imagine (lets see, you got whitewater, powder king, shames, seymour, hemlock?...) do they even call themselves Resorts? In an industry controlled by the likes of Intrawest, RCR, and others you seam to have quite the idealistic thinking towards the current state of society today.

actually yea - if you can figure out how to steal a computer from mac and get away with it, do it!

(or even better "liberate" it from future shop or best buy, because as I said in my original post in this thread - if you are stealing a mac from future shop, future shop has already paid for the computer and therefor, how is it stolen? the product has already been purchased from the manufacturer. And I'm sure future shop has insurance on that kind of shit - they're not even losing anything out of the deal.

wow i used to think you had an opinion that was worthy of reading in your blog but this is absurd!!  You think that because best buy bought the computer from mac, that it is "already paid for and you are not stealing."  Thats is foolish,  the kid who got his poles stolen, they were paid for twice!!  the original kid bought them, then sold them to the thread creator for $15 so it doesnt matter they were stolen, they were paid for twice!!

As a small business owner i can assure you that stealing from a store is just as dick as stealing from an individual.  Last month I caught a 19 year old girl stealing $150 cowboy boots.  Now did she really NEED these boots? No but she thought she could get them for free.  Do you know how pissed i was when i found the empty box in the store?  just as pissed as this thread creator.  I drove around the area for 45 mins looking for her and i finally found her car and got the boots back.

Moral of the story? stealing is stealing, there is a reason things cost money, if you dont have the money dont take it from someone else

it's not like i'm saying people should go around stealing from local business. Alright, what does best buy do to the local economy other then employ people in the area? you have to look at where the profits go and where the product comes from to justify the price attached. Look at food. Why the hell are we even paying for food? the fact that in italy pasta is getting so expensive they can't afford it... that's like saying someone in quebec can't afford maple syrup when the raw product supply doesn't drop. (A big problem right now with the food issue is very evident across the board where food crops are being dropped to make fuel crops)

Red Peppers are 3.49/lb right now in my town, why the price increase?

other than stealing from the corporate world the only thing you can really do is not support them and don't even step into the store (which would in the long run make things change). That's why instead of going to Fernie and stealing from the hill, I just boycott RCR. I'm not promoting stealing, i'm just defending the ideas behind it and pointing out the corrupt system behind the cost of things in the first place.

my mountain is rated #1 for crime in the Northeast. good ol' Shawnee Peak. our town has a friday night program where they haul a few bus loads of kids up to the mountain for like 5 hours and every friday at least 2 boards or skis are stolen. so i carry mine in the lodge and through the cafeteria line with me

well since we're on the topic of stealing and karma i had the opportunity to take 50 free dollars from my bank because the teller straight up handed me the wrong amount, but I didn't and corrected her mistake.
The next day I missed getting stuck on a lift for about an hour by 5 minutes,  got first tracks off a cliff, and missed getting in an accident by 5 feet.

Im not going to give a lengthy response, I kinda get where your coming from but i think the wording is off.  My only things is that if someone in Quebec cant afford maple syrup or someone in italy cant afford pasta....Maybe they should get off there ass and make some!!!!!!!  Jesus maple syrup flows from trees why do you need to buy it?!  For thousands of years the people of italy have made there own pasta now they are bitiching that Barilla cost to much?  give me a break and work for your food if you dont have the money

why is there a price increase in red peppers? because its fucking winter! news flash. peppers don't grow when there is snow on the ground (are they even grown where you're from?). so they have to be SHIPPED to your town, thus making it more expensive. Also your point against pasta, really? If people in Italy cannot afford pasta then that means they are broke, as pasta is probably the cheapest food you can buy, so by saying they can't afford pasta is because they can't buy food in general. And relating that to maple syrup, is ridiculous, if you really want to have maple syrup you go find some maple trees and tap them and boil the sap = maple syrup, I make it myself every spring. Honestly if this is a topic that really bothers you, buy foods that are in season and grown locally they will be cheaper, i bet raspberries are pretty expensive now too, what a surprise! On another note, I respect you're decision to boycott RCR, just felt you were a bit off on the other topics.

yea, but you're forgetting that "back in the day" the farmers would grow the corn which would be turned into flour which would be turned into pasta - which the farmers fed their families with. if you happened to not be a farmer you'd have to contribute something useful towards the farmers (most likely at a farmers market) to receive some of their food. everyone had what the needed, all was good.

now - all those corn crops are owned by the corporate world and are used for ethanol (bio-diesel), local farmers can't compete and those that aren't farmers can't afford to buy the produce that is available, and there is no land to purchase in order to grow their own crops.

the issue isn't laziness towards the want to eat. the issue is that there isn't enough food being produced to meet the demand because crops are being changed from food crops to fuel crops (making the supply of food smaller - making the cost of food higher).

as you said. "maple syrup flows from the trees, why do we need to buy it?" that is the way we should be looking at ALL food. it all grows without us having to pay it to grow. Hell, trees grow for free, so when i go and buy wood at the hardware store to build a house, should i really be paying for something that doesn't cost anything to be in the first place? Everything we have in this world is already in this world, it was here before humans made money and deemed it the most important symbol of our time. Now humans can't understand a world without having to pay for EVERYTHING, and I'm the one with no morals because I think the fact that they are charging us shit loads of money for EVERYTHING is the real theft in this world.


To further this discussion (or debate, whatever) we could get into the whole philosophical debate of good vs evil because that is basically the underlying root of the debate we are having right now as to weather stealing is acceptable. I mean, who started stealing from who first? The public or the corporation?

To everbody in this thread. I don't care what your reasons are for stealing, whether it be from a big corporation or from an individual. STEALING IS WRONG. In both cases, you are taking something from somebody who has worked hard to get to said position in the first place. In the case of an individual, they probably bought whatever you stole from them with their own, hard-earned cash. Why is it fair to take that from them? In the case of the corporation, if you steal from them, you are stealing from every member in the corporation, which just breaks down into a whole lot of individuals. If you were to steal something like a table from IKEA, that money could have gone into so many branches of the company, whether it be research, marketing, or payroll, it all eventually leads to one thing - people getting paid for their hard work at the company. So why is that any different?!?

Don't steal. It's wrong, and if you really want to get philosophical, by way of the butterfly effect, every time you steal from somebody else, you're just stealing from yourself.

Really?  The reason that you pay for things, is because you're incapable of producing them yourself.  True, everything in this world now, existed before us.  But you can't even tell me that you're capable of producing a car?  That's absurd.  You pay GMC because they have the capabilities of producing a vehicle... you need money to do this, because a car is a significant investment.  If we still had a barter system, how many bushels of apples would a car be worth?  As things become worth more, we need money.  Money is so important, because without it, society could not exist the way it does now.  And I'm sorry but I like the place the human society is at right now...
