I'm driving a 2024 Jetta Sport standard.... it's pretty basic. But it's one of the only new cars I can find that isn't only in automatic and isn't over $50K.
I Learned on an automatic and drove one for 10 years before I learned how to drive a manual. Bought my first manual at 27 years old because it was $1,500 cheaper and my pops convinced me it'd be worth learning.
Wondeing if anyone on here knows standard? I work with 40 year olds who can't drive standard and now it honestly feels weird to drive an auto noe. The clutch really feels like it makes you part of the car. I can only imagine what driving a horse & buggy felt like.

I daily a manual and tbh it kinda fuckin sucks. It's only romanticized because it has become rare. Functionally I enjoy it but I enjoy the comfort of not having to shift way more.
I bet if we could have a poll there is probably a stronger number of manual drivers in the ski crowd here compared to normies. Both my Bimmers are 6MT including one I frequently take to mountains. A comfortable clutch is so nice to have while creeping up the mountain on i70

2024 Jetta has an auto brake on hills and on flat you don't even need to hit the gas to roll foward in first. THe clutch in first is literally the same as the gas. First gear in it is esentially only feathering the clutch properly. I can also pop into second at a dead stop if i am gentle and timely.

ohh hell yea. it tooke me a week to drive a standard. It took me a month to feel like I knew what i was doing. It took 6 months to feel comfortable. It took me a year of morning traffic to feel one with my car lol.
My first standard was during covid and working from home so i barely went anywhere. Now I spend about 30 mins a day in traffic heading to work and it'st made me feel one with the clutch pretty damn quickly.

6 speed is nice. I'm getting pretty good at the downshift to avoid breaking unnecessary braking.
Funny story i was casually driving home from the gym after work last summer. Ther's a stretch of close to a mile that is gradual down hill and then super steep at the end. I was in the right lane and just casually down shifting from 6th to 3rd and not touching my brakes.
A cop pulled behind me for a while and was just tailing me. Eventually the lights go on and I pull into the shoulder and a young guy is questioning me curiously and almost cluelessly telling me my tail lights are out. At first I was confused because it's 7PM and still pretty light out and my auto lights are on in the front but not in the back.
Long story short he asked me to press the brake and saw my brake lights go on and then apologized.
I wasn't even mad about it. Shit ended up being hilarious.

Wouldn’t trade my 6spd sti for anything. Holding onto that baby long term. Only 33k miles. The gf’s mini S 2dr is also 6spd. It’s a 24. Last year they offered a manual. So holding onto that too.
I drive an 0̷2 golf diesel with a 5 speed. I accidentally slam the brake in autos when creeping in parking lots now and then thinking I will put the clutch in to coast. whoops. Love manuals, particularly my old one. No traction control, no hill assist, just a direct connection. I like it more than my brothers '19 golf 6speed

it is crazy how much people rely on seeing others brake lights before they slow down at all.
on my motorcycle i purposely flash my brakes at cars so they know i am actually slowing down cause they do not realize i can come to nearly a full stop just downshifting and people have nearly rear-ended me.

My daily is auto but I've driven many manuals. Learned to drive a manual at 15, drove potato trucks (10-wheeler) during harvest for 3 seasons while in HS. Got my class A CDL with all the endorsements at 18 as I thought I would possibly use it but never have. Currently still have it other than hazardous material handling.
I’ve been looking at trading my Cummins in for a powerstroke but after working on my buddies this weekend I never will. These engine bays are a fucking mess. Good luck working on anything.
Also didn’t wanna double post but it just goes to show how clueless people are though. we shouldn’t need to see brake lights to judge following distance back in the day you didn’t see brake lights cuz engine braking now it’s regenerative braking ppl just can’t pay attention

if you love the sizing and torque of the bolt, you should try to test drive an ioniq 5N. I'm not an EV guy personally, but holy shit that thing will scare you if you put your foot down

Only 2 out of 6 cars I’ve owned have been automatic. It’s fun as hell, but as I get older I’m less opposed to an auto. I’m sort of biased cause I’m currently stuck commuting 2-3hrs/day in suburban hell, having an automatic transmission and radar cruise control definitely makes it less tiring to sit in traffic. No clue where I'll end up once I graduate, so I’m still unsure what the next car is gonna be.
CalumSKIif you love the sizing and torque of the bolt, you should try to test drive an ioniq 5N. I'm not an EV guy personally, but holy shit that thing will scare you if you put your foot down
My buddy has one, it’s fucking insane. I’ve always driven very slow cars, and am definitely not used to feeling my eyeballs getting yeeted into the back of my skull when I floor it.
