get one with a solid axle and this will change haha. im also looking for either a t100 or taco, leaning towards t100 or an older tundra because i need the towing capacity though. Do t100s have the same fram rust issues as 1995-2000ish tacomas?

No sir, all t100s like 4 runners are manufactured in the japan plants. t100 was not part of the rust recall whatsoever.

Not gonna lie I like the toughness of the old straight axles but I love my highway traveling and the IFS suits me just fine.

I'd have to dig around for some pics of the 91, that was a damn awesome truck though. Double tube bumpers front and back. Guy had kill switches on all the rear lights for field hoppin when I bought it too, that was fun.

and for anyone interested in numbers.

The 88 was bought in about 03 for 2500, sold in 05 for 1500.

91 was bought in 05 for 2700, totaled maybe a year later(not my fault) got 5100 back from his insurance.

98 was bought for 9900 in 05, sold back to yota for rust in 07ish for 11500.

4runner bought for 2000 in 08ish, sold to a friend in 09 for 750(hes a good friend and needed a truck, I had offers over 1500 at the time)

T100 was bought in 09 for 10200 or so. She's still runnin strong at about 170,000 miles.

All bought in PA except the t100 was from jersey. The t100 actually has a block heater on the 3.4 6 cyl haha. Dude was a fireman and we think he wanted it to keep warm in winter in case he had to jump in the truck and haul to the firehouse on a call. Unless he went somewhere really really far north and needed it I really don't know. 3rd owner on the t100.

Nice runner, I see you cruise the powerlines too huh.

I loved my runner, its part of the reason I sold it to my buddy. He took the cap off and left it like that this summer. I regularly take hairraising rides through the fields/back from the bar riding in the back standing up holding onto the roll bar. That trucks a champ for sure.

Hopefully I can sell it soon before I rack up too many more miles. Apparently there isn't a very large market for manual transmission FJ Cruisers. Who would have thought?

I just put my cap back on for the winter, its an 85 so it has the solid axle and efi which is nice. Im going to start on a cage soon, ive had a few close encounters with rolling so thats next on my list.

How much lift ya got on that thing? Very nice man, I don't wheel serious enough to worry about rollin her yet. I'm trying to baby the t100 a bit until she gets a little older and more beat up. Although I did hit a deer just last week and put two basketball sized dents behind my passenger door. Fuckin pennsylvania whitetails are everywhere.

Just curious, what year and goodies did you have on the taco that got ya 12 grand back. I thought 11500 for mine was great, although I did strip just about everything off of it before I sold it back ha.

Pathfinders are pretty badass too.

I think around 4-5". Ill probably drop it a bit when i redo the suspension and switch to a linked front setup, then if my 22re dies ill throw a mercedes diesel in. Definitly one of the most capable and fun trucks ive been in or seen in my area

Why are you storing it? I mean obviously your FJ will handle the snow no problem, but why dont you use the sti in the winter?

There's really just no use for it in the winter, and I don't use it as a daily anyway. I've just been driving it a lot lately because the weather is nice and winter hasn't hit yet, plus I'm trying to keep the miles down on the FJ so I can sell it and buy something more fun for a DD. Nobody seems to want it though and the dealerships are offering me shitty deals haha. Fuck me, right?

I live in ultra-suburbia metro Detroit haha. It's all soccer moms in Hummers and middle-aged guys driving automatic Bimmers and Corvettes, with the occasional exotic. There is no love for the manual FJ :(

fuckin beautiful man, that thing is mint. Love the old yota stock stripes too, there were so many damn varieties and they all looked awesome.

When bought that 4runner the fuckin guy told me he took the stock stripes off, I coulda smacked him right in the face.

Theres a dealership in portland that is selling basically brand new subaru wrx's for super cheap. Like 2011 for 21k. But they come with reconstructed titles, would that be a bad thing to buy into. Obviously if they were hit anywhere in front of the drivers door, its a no go. But if it was hit in the back and then rebuilt like they are, would it still be bad or could that be a good deal?

Resale value drops, structural integrity drops, harder to resell used, can be harder to register. I would steer away from it. Make sure to have the car inspected by a mechanic, and pull up a carfax.

in my opinion stay the fuck away from salvage titles/recon titles..a good rule of thumb is the motto if its too good to be true, it probably is

especially with all the flooding that happened in VT/ME last year with that crazy storm the car could have been scrapped because of extensive flood damage and they could have picked it up cheap made it look pretty and then give it to some unsuspecting customer..same thing is gonna happen to A LOT of the NY/NJ cars after sandy

I would never buy a car for 21k without getting every inch of it checked out first, and carfax the fuck outta it.

And it has a oregon reconstructed title.. so i dont think it could have been damaged from flooding from the other side of the country. But thank you for your input

I've seen a lot about them on nasioc, obviously a better resource than newschoolers. You should be able to find some info on there easily.

I would personally never drop anything close to that for a reconstructed/salvage title, let alone a car that has been in an accident.

ha I instantly thought portland, ME for some reason..if you have your heart set on it I would bring it to an independent mechanic, give them some cash and ask them to inspect the fuck out of it

arent there a lot of way to flub a carfax? for some reason i remember stories of ppl buyin clean carfax report cars only to find shit wasnt reported correctly

meh, nasioc is full of a lot of posers. Think of a lot of the douche bags that drive wrx's and sti's. They are on there and lots of them just spot shit to sound cool. Surprisingly nasioc is full of a shitload of trolls just like NS.

I've heard a lot about this as well. Not exactly sure how it's done, but apparently it can be done.

This shop supposedly specializes in reconstructed/salvage/rebuilt titled cars. When I was shopping for WRX's a few years back, I was definitely aware of this place, but stayed far away.

Agreed, wholeheartedly.

But in the PNW local sub-forums, there is a lot of information on this particular shop. That was my only point about nasioc being a better reference than newschoolers.

I wouldnt either to be honest, thats why if i did end up getting a subie, i would like to get up to about 15k and just put cash down on the table. that way i would pay less, and wouldnt have to deal with a loan.

Why not track down an 05+ LGT? Cheaper insurance than a WRX, with far more creature comforts.

After driving a bunch of different turbo'd Subaru's, I wish I would have gone with the LGT instead of the WRX Limited I used to own. I am still trying to find a nice LGT sedan myself to pick up as a daily driver to keep the miles off my Xterra.

im not too familiar with the location of the reconstructed title works, but to my knowledge, its where the car is registered AFTER it has been salvaged/reconstructed, so some of them very well can be from flooded areas, buy a wreck from across the country, have it brought to where you are, fix it up, sell it?


unless you are doing the reconstruction/salvage yourself, stay away

it happens a lot with people bringing nicer cars for cheap-er prices into canada (bc in particular). when you cross the boarder with a vehicle you dont need to prove that it was a salvage, and the registration process in bc allows for vehicles that have been salvaged to slip by very very easily, basically unless you come out and say it was a wreck, there is no way of finding out on a us import.


two summers ago i was looking to buy an mkv gti/gli, some guy had an 08 gli on craigslist for 13k, (super cheap up in bc) so i figured i would take a look and see whats up. he did not tell me about any accidents, showed me the icbc report for the vin of the car (carfax), showed no indication of any collisions or accidents.

seeing as i worked in a ford dealership service department, i the guy bring it to the dealership and had two of my mechanic buddies put it up on a hoist and do a full inspection for me. we were looking around the car under and after about 15 minutes we noticed that the fan still hadnt turned off and the keys were out of the ignition/locked etc, and so we popped the hood, looked inside, ALL of the front quarter pannels were replaced, new front bumper, there were still remnants of shattered wiring harness clips everywhere.

so we called the guy out on it, he says " i have no idea what youre talking about, i bought it from my friend" call him out AGAIN, show him that the serial numbers/stamps dont match factory serial numbers/stamps on the body pannels (only pointed out one of the qp's at first), then he comes out and says yeah he bought it from his friend who was in a little fender-bender, we call him out AGAIN, and say no, thats bullshit, both front quarters have been replaced and the bumper, and that there are bits of wiring harness plastic everywhere in the engine bay and he responds with "so are you going to buy it or what?" and my response $5k top offer take it or leave it, please leave


moral of the story, be careful, definitely stay away from salvages, they may look/seem to run fine, but theyre just a shitstorm of issues waiting to happen

I see a couple of you talking about the Taco recall. I also had my 99 recalled and they gave me a check for 12,400 which was sweet since i bought it for 6,400. It was all gone in 3 days though. The week before i had it checked out a leaf split and when it happened it slashed the torque bar(i think thats what their called) and cut my brake line so it was nice i passed the recall test.

Saved me thousands and gave me thousands.

hey how much did you pay for your rack if you dont mind me asking?

i am looking to either get an oem vw rack with board carrier (that i may be lucky enough to have a hookup on so it should be around the same price as the thule), and probably get a thule wind fairing to install onto the rack, or go for a full thule setup


anyone know the quality of the oem vw base bars and board carriers? ive heard they are built by thule and rebranded as vw?
