Camera protection while skiing?

I plan on doing a bunch of photographing this winter break at the terrain park. But i dont want to be "the guy" who doesnt hit anything in fear of breaking my camera. So im trying to think of good ways to carry my camera over the hits and on the rails and have it at least somewhat protected and not getting in the way. Its a cannon g9 which is pretty small and durable. It has a really touch outer shell and it fits into my jeans pocket.

But its a $600 12 megapixel camera so I dont want to take any chances.

At first i was thinking I could wrap it up and put it in a small backpack, or put it in a chest pocket where i would be least likely to fall on it. Anyone have some suggestions?

Haha, thats sounds hard to protect. When i go out to CO i bring all my camera stuff, but i have and bronica and a 1N and al there lenses and stuff. So i just put it in my photo backpack and bring it up for a few runs and shoot all my photos, then the rest of the day i just ski. If you want to take pictures of your friends, get a disposable or a stylus epic or something, or a tiny p and s.

I thought you were talking about proper cameras so I would have recommended the Dakine Sequence, but as you are talking about a G9, I would buy the specific Lowe Pro case for the camera and just put it in a bag as well protected as possible. You shouldn't break that think unless you fall directly on to it, in whic case the screen will be the first to go.

yeah maybe i could just straight air or simple spins when i have that thing on me, then when i go for big stuff i could get my friends to shoot me.

I like the fact that my camera shoots 1080p high def lol

I am getting a Canon EOS Rebel Xsi for Christmas and I am already scared to death to ski with, but your camera is smaller so you should be ok with just buying a small case. If worst comes to worst, put it in a backpack and wrap a lot of towels around it.

I skied with my new D90 this week in a lowpro backpack and it was alright, i was worried a lil but everything was fine. They make Camera Armor that i hear is pretty tough stuff. Might be worth looking into.

yeah camera armour might be good. However I think a car could ride over my camera without it breaking already. Im just worried about the shock on the internal parts if it was to be smashed against something. I think Im going to buy a good form fitting backpack that wont get in the way when im jibbing.

Don't hit rails or jumps with it in a pocket.Definitely too high a risk of breaking it. I always skiied with my camera in my pocket, then last year with my Canon Point and shoot in the inside padded audio pocket of my jacket, taking pictures and hiking the park, fell a bunch of times, went inside to look at the pics and my screen was smashed. The camera still worked. Ski for a bit taking pics, then leave it inside in your locker or whatever and go skiing for fun. Or if anyone you ride with is willing to take pics, just take turns with it.

i always cary my camera in my pelican case. its water proof, made of hard plastic, and filled with foam that molds to your camera so you can eat shit and your camera wont

haha skiing with a pelican case ....awesome for airports and travel but its a hard case.....i recommend the lowepro line of cases they make sling bags and other stuff thats easy to get into ...buy a size up and add your own padding ..or wrap it in a few micro fleece towels ...my 2cents

good thread, i have a camera backpack that i use so ill ski the morning and then after lunch ill pick it up from a locker i had put it in the morning and shoot for 2 hours and then put it back and ski the rest of the day...with my new setup (2000+) i am not sure i will want to leave it in a locker though...

I was looking at camelbak's website and they have some really slim low profile backpacks, I think they might be good for carrying small camera's. Plus they can give you hydration if you want to filler up.
