sue and rich went fishing on monday
they caught 20 fish
they went back on tuesday and caught 30 more
when they went back on wednesday how many did they catch.  Why?

20 x 1.5 = 30 

30 x 1.5 = 45

they catch 1.5 times as many fish each day

my little cousins cunt of a teacher marked him wrong for that in the third grade.  hes a pretty smart kid and  had basically the same explanation as you but the teacher said the answer was 40.  my whole family is debating over this right now.

Realistically at a 3rd grade level it more appropriate for a teacher to be looking for a +10 pattern as the answer, that being said i think your cousin's teacher should give him some credit for finding a pattern of 1.5x which takes a certain amount of skill

who said it follows a pattern? Catching fish is all random. Either way, to determine a correct pattern you need more than 2 values.

Well technically the teacher is wrong by even saying that 40 is correct. The amount of fish you can catch on any given day is not at all related to how many fish you caught the day before.

And I thought all pattern problems had to have at least 3 givens? If it went from 2 to 4, what would it be on the third day? 6, 8, and 16 are all legit answers.

My brother had a problem similar to this in his math book and I told him to skip it because there wasn't enough info to solve the problem.  Math book writers are retarded.

Considering the age of the people in quesiton, I'm gonna have to say that 40 is the correct answer being that 20+10=30 and 30+10=40...so 40 would be correct considering we're talking 3rd grade. Older than that it could very well be the x*1.5 thing.

what a stupid question. the answer should be ~25. because it is the mean number of of fish caught in two days is 25, it is likely that 25 fish will be caught on the third day. you can't have a statistically significant linear trend with just two values

This is the most reasonable answer. It is rediculous to think that the kid will catch 1.5 times as many fish each day or 10 more each day. You can't catch fish at an exponential rate.

i think another thing that hasnt been put into consideration is the fact that the probability of catching fish will be much less since there are now 50 less fish then there were in the water.

obviously you need to know the location of said fishing area, and the month you are fishing. then you need to know the stocking report numbers. and since you caught a higher number of fish, the probability of catching more fish the next day is less likely. so fuck that teacher.

there are so many answers, fucking stupid ass teacher. you should personally go down there and own her ass. fucking not even giving enough info to solve the problem. cunt.

The third grade answer would be 40.  But for your little cousin to find the more complex answer is really smart she should be praising him instead of punishing him for such intelligencee in year 3.

Props to your cousin for finding the x1.5 pattern. But I think the rest if you need to be more realistic. I don't think I was learning about geometric patterns in gr.3, let alone ones that are multiplied by decimals. But I concur, there should have been a third value.
